116% increase in less than 2 years.
It disappoints me to have to give Safestore a 1 star review, because my experience renting space with them started out so well, and was easy and smooth for the first 11 months.
I also need to mention that this review does not in any way reflect the customer service from the team at Safestore Basildon. They have all been fantastic.
I signed up on a 12 month contract for a 75 sq ft unit in october 2020. Locking in for 12 months saved us some money, and as we were moving to Australia for atleast 12 months, this seemed like a good, safe option. At £154.00 per 4 weeks, it was a big expense, but worth it to keep the contents of our family home safe while we were gone.
I was absolutely gobsmacked when, 11 months later, i recieved an email stating that our £154 per 4 weeks was increasing 40% to £217 per 4 weeks on the first month after our contract ended. A call to the store confirmed that i was unable to make any savings by locking in to a further 12 month contract.
Today i received another Email. My "half a bedroom" sized storage unit is, from next month, going to cost me almost half of a mortgage payment. A further increase of 53% to £333 per 4 weeks. That is an increase from our original payments of 116%. MORE THAN DOUBLE IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS!
I am currently getting quotes from other storage facilities. I will be jumping on a plane, coming home and renting a van to move my contents elsewhere. Not only does this still work out cheaper than to stay at Safestore paying £4,329.00 for the next 12 months, but if I don't take this action and these price increases continue, these 4 weekly payments will stop being just impractical and budget stretching, but actually impossible to afford.
Avoid renting space here long term, especially if you're moving abroad.
