I purchased an ACT clutch kit and flywheel for my 2017 Subaru WRX expecting a product that would meet or exceed OEM reliability. Unfortunately, the clutch failed after approximately 3,000 miles.

For perspective, the OEM clutch previously installed in the vehicle lasted over 121,000 miles under similar driving conditions. Because of that, I was shocked to experience a complete clutch failure so soon after installation.

The failure occurred while I was traveling out of state and resulted in substantial unexpected expenses, including towing, vehicle rentals, rideshare transportation, extended lodging, and approximately $2,800 in labor costs to replace the clutch assembly.

I submitted the components to ACT for inspection under warranty. ACT’s conclusion was that the clutch exhibited signs of excessive heat, slipping, and abuse, and the warranty claim was denied.

My concern is that while the inspection described the condition of the parts at the time of failure, it did not satisfactorily explain why a clutch assembly would deteriorate to that extent in only 3,000 miles. The explanation focused on the resulting wear and heat damage but did not address the unusually short service life compared to the OEM unit that had previously operated successfully in the same vehicle.

Throughout the process, communication was generally professional, and the components were ultimately returned to me upon request. However, I was disappointed that the warranty review did not meaningfully address the issue of premature failure or provide any assistance with the substantial costs incurred as a result.

I encourage prospective buyers to carefully research the product, review recent customer experiences, and consider the potential costs associated with a premature failure should one occur.
