Fray Bentos Tinned Steak & Kidney Pie
Fray Bentos Tinned Steak & Kidney Pie
Dear Fray Bentos,
Why, oh why, is it harder to get into one of your pies than it is to break into Fort Knox?
I love your Steak & Kidney Pie. In fact, Iâve loved them for years. The problem is that these days I can barely afford them, and when I do finally splash out on one, I need the strength of a professional wrestler and the tools of a bomb disposal unit just to get the lid off.
Back in 2019, I could buy one for around £1. Fast forward to 2026 and theyâre over £3. Thatâs an increase of more than 200% in seven years. By my calculations, thatâs roughly a 30% increase every year. Thirty percent! Thatâs so far above inflation it should have its own space programme.
But the real issue isnât the price. Itâs the tin.
Todayâs pie and I entered into mortal combat. I arrived armed with three different tin openers, optimism, and a healthy appetite. Ten attempts later, the pie remained sealed tighter than government secrets. The tin opener surrendered. My patience surrendered. Eventually, I surrendered.
The pie won.
After twenty minutes of wrestling with this metal nightmare, I was left hot, sweaty, furious, and seriously considering launching the pie at someoneâs head. In the interests of remaining a law-abiding citizen and avoiding a prison sentence over a pastry-based incident, I reluctantly chose to launch it into the bin instead.
This is not the first time this has happened. It seems every purchase comes with an unexpected challenge: âCan You Actually Access The Contents?â
Surely, in 2026, mankind can put robots on Mars, carry entire libraries in our pockets, and ask artificial intelligence to write complaint letters, yet Fray Bentos still canât design a tin that opens without requiring specialist equipment and an anger management course.
For the record, neither I nor my tin openers have any issues opening literally any other tin on the market. Beans? Fine. Soup? No problem. Dog food? Opens like a dream. But a Fray Bentos pie apparently requires the determination of an Arctic explorer and the grip strength of a gorilla.
I look forward to hearing what exactly is done to these tins before they leave the factory, and whether there are any plans to make them accessible to ordinary humans in the foreseeable future.
Yours faithfully,
A defeated pie enthusiast
Yet again I have struggled trying toâŠ
Yet again I have struggled trying to open a Fray bentos steak and kidney pie , not easy with arthritic hands , I have a rotary opener, didnât touch it , tried the clip on automated opener , no joy so eventually had to use a chisel and hammer to get it open , now would it be too difficult to make the tops ring pull ,either that or you lose a customer and hubby goes without his pie .
I've always loved Baxters products andâŠ
I've always loved Baxters products and they're as good today as ever. Their soup is excellent and highly recommended.
CHEAP RUBBISH PRISON SLOP AVOID AND BOYCOTT
Even 1 star is too much. The soup was not as advertised in the picture fullness butter beans and carrot.
It barely had anything in it ðªð
THE SOUP WAS LITERALLY WATER AND VERY VERY BLAND to the point it was worse than a budget brand soup. TOTALLY RUBBISH.
I emailed Baxters and phoned them up. On email I was fobbed off as its a matter of preference to which i replied to them its a matter of false advertising and selling people bland water with semi raw butter beans AT A PREMIUM PRICE!
They took details of the batch but refused to give a refund.
Trading standards need to investigate this company for.misleading adverts and pictures. The product is not fit for purpose or described.
It must be described as budget prison slop that is semi raw !!
The customer services were ridiculous ð. Just want the batch number thank you and BYE!
Why should people pay £1.60 for semi raw budget prison slop and then do Baxters own quality control job and telling them the soup was rubbish at customer expenses.
They don't even refund the money we wasted on this cheap watery slop!
They charge us to test their rubbish semi raw prison slop at PREMIUM PRICES.
WE TOLD THEM WE WOULD NEVER BUY THIS RUBBISH AGAIN!
WITH THE ATTITUDE AND PRODUCT EVERYONE MUST BOYCOTT THIS COMPANIES PRODUCTS.

Sorry could not add pictures of baxters super prison slop!
Your better off adding a stock cube to.boiling water than buying this watered down super budget super slop.

Baxters fray bentos
Well Baxters ie fray bentos spent £3.50 on a meat pudding and basically it was thick pastry filled with grease sent to customer service to be told that three weeks to look into it finally got a response to be told that there were no issues with production for that day no apology or anything safe to say I wonât buy any products from this company again there products have gone rubbish for what they charge please just save your money
Thin, watery, and tasteless
âCream of Asparagusâ proudly displayed on the tin, but the taste experience was neither creamy or even vaguely reminiscent of Asparagus. Instead I was on the receiving end of a watery bowl of cream coloured liquid, with a few pieces of Asparagus stalk floating around in it, the âsoupâ was almost tasteless and impossible to eat with a spoon, being so runny and thin.
Fray Bentos Steak Pie
Fray Bentos Steak Pie. I was really excited about this pie which I remembered in my childhood. Judging by the reviews I assumed the quality had risen but alas I think it's sadly more a case of consumer expectation falling! If you remove the stodgy pastry you could probably drink the rest. Just flavoured gravy with a tiny amount of exceptionally small lumps of offal. Not one of my best experiences. You could probably find more meat in a can of dog food. Sadly I bought 6 tins @â¬10 each from a well known website because I live in france. Big mistake. I'd be better off with a plate of snails ð
Itâs time to call your tinned piesâŠ
Itâs time to call your tinned pies gravy pies because I needed a magnifying glass to see the meat; virtually none to speak of. What a con! I bought one for nostalgic reasons, never again.
Baxters Overpriced Soup Featuring Soil Grit and Rotten Veg
My last 4 tins of Baxters over priced soup.. Chicken Broth - rotten veg was found. Cockaleekie soup - soil grit found in the leeks because of the way they cut and prep the leeks. You are not supposed to cut them straight across, because they hold grit between the leaves. Next came another tin of Chicken broth which again had rotten veg and finally Minestrone Soup - again rotten veg. I've been posting pictures of the rotten veg on their Facebook page, but they couldn't even be bothered commenting, let alone try to provide any kind of customer service whatsoever. They're not even represented on Twitter like other brands, where it's easy to interact.
Being a bit generous with one starâŠ
Being a bit generous with one star even.have always bought their pea and ham. Just had a tin more like pea water. Will not buy Baxters again.

Don't waste your money
I thought it would be impossible to be any worse than a fray bentos steak and kidney pudding but I was wrong. They ooze out before they finish cooking and then they collapse when you try and get them out of the can. Guess what. The pies in the tins are exactly the same. Filling oozing out over the oven floor before cooking has even ended. I wonder if there is a YouTube video on how to get these out of the tin in one piece. Or should you eat them directly from the tin , who knows. it's harder to think of a bigger waste of money and it's incredible that fray bentos as a brand are still going. I purchased a bundle from Fray bentos (Baxters) a few weeks ago so I have six steak puddings and five steak and gravy tinned pies left. They've all gone in the bin. I wouldn't even inflict these on a food bank.
Royal Game soup disappointing.
We bought a can of Royal Game soup: something we had not done for many years due to its high price.
We were very disappointed: it had too much pepper, which numbed our mouths, and we found it to lack flavour and substance compared with our recollections from previous experience. Maybe that was because of the excessive pepper. Either way, we did not enjoy it and would not buy it again. We complained using their online form and received an acknowledgement. Since then, we have heard nothing.
We can only assume, therefore, that they don't care, and the lack of response to complaints on this site would support that view. Baxters has not featured in our shopping list very much during the last 20 years and now will remain permanently off.
Stick to Baxters lentil & bacon soup if you can find it in shops
I'm not sure why but Morrisons near me don't stock Baxters Lentil &bacon Soup anymore. It was my favourite. I thought I would try their lentil and vegetable variety but I ate half and rest went into the bin. What a waste of my money Urgh. Not to my taste at all !! Also 2years ago these soups used to cost 59p but now cost around £2 unless on offer. Mad.
Buy special can openers ??
I havent bought Fray Bentos pies in a while, but was disappointed to see that it broke 2 can openers. Never had an issue opening them before, but for some reason, this cannot be done anymore. They recommend 2 makes of can opener, but to be honest, this shouldn't be needed, any can opener should open them, or they should do somethig like a corned beef tin and have their own opener. Very disappointed. I contacted them and basically got we will pass this on to their internal quality team. I certainly wont be buying again, the 2 I bought went in the bin!
Avoid Baxters hot smoked salmon chowder
It is difficult to know where to start but maybe how a chowder should be: A chowder should be a thick creamy soup packed with flavour.
This however is thin and watery, I didn't find any fish in the soup just bits of half cooked potato, no onion, no sweet corn, that however is nothing when you take into account that it made me gag, as it smelt and tasted off and I couldn't eat it. I love the royal game soup they make but this was terrible
Silly pricingâŠ
Can you explain why Garners Pickled onions which I understand you acquired are so expensive? £4 a jar is ridiculous. The only time I buy them is Christmas when they are reduced and on offer......the clues in the pricing! Make them a reasonable price and I'd buy them every week.
Quality has plummeted.
This once family favourite is now a no go zone for this household.
We used to love Baxters products, always a bit more expensive than other brands but worth it. Not any longer, we just opened a jar of beetroot, tried some and then threw the lot in the bin. It was like wood and totally without taste.
Where is the Salmon?
Extremely disappointed with this Baxters Hot Smoked Salmon Chowder Soup. It needs to be renamed to "potato soup" as potato seems to be the only ingredient you will find, floating in a watery soup. Will not be buying Baxters ever again and it's a complete rip off.
Scotch broth soup really awful
