My ‘SMILE’ surgery at Optegra has left me with permanent eye blurriness. After many visits to the Optegra opticians, they continued to gaslight me that my vision was fine. Eventually Mr Shortt saw me and did some other tests and elected I had in fact -0.75 prescription at night in my eye. Can’t help but feel the diagnosis was reverse engineered from my dissatisfaction, as the previous year of other specialists there didn’t notice it, and the glasses he gave me did nothing. It is like I am looking through a thin layer of Vaseline, and 2 year’s on, I still have it and it is no better despite giving it time to heal. I wish I had gone to Moorfields - I strongly suggest you stump up the extra cash and do the same. Don’t gamble with your health.

I had a long chat with Alex as to whether I should elect for multi focal lens replacement. He listened to my reasons and expectations. We eventually decided to postpone any surgery and review the situation in a couple of years time. I was delighted with the discussion and will most certainly return to him when the clinical need is greater.

I had no intention of getting eye correction surgery until a friend had it done and couldn't stop praising the results. Being both long and short-sighted, I had been using varifocals for the last decade, but my eyesight wasn't improving, and I was tired of the cost of changing prescriptions every few years and constantly cleaning my glasses. I contacted Optegra in Guildford, where my friend had their procedure, and decided to book an appointment to see if I was a candidate for lens replacement.

During my morning appointment, I saw an optician who conducted extensive, but painless, eye tests and explained the process and what to expect. Later that day, I received a call confirming that I was a perfect candidate for the surgery.

A few days before the procedure, I spoke with Mr. Alex Shortt, who would perform the lens replacement. He thoroughly explained every detail and answered all of my questions without making me feel rushed. About a week later, I had the lens replacement for both eyes at the same time (end of December). Despite my nerves, the team immediately put me at ease. After pre-surgery eye drops and a relaxant, I went in for the treatment. Lying down with my head in a supportive bowl, I chatted with Alex Shortt, and before I knew it, he was halfway through the procedure. I experienced no pain and actually enjoyed the process.

After the operation, you are light sensitive and a groggy! Again this is not uncomfortable. You just need to sleep that off. You must follow a strict regimen of eye drops four times a day for about 6 weeks. The post-op team label everything clearly, making it easy to administer the drops at the right times.

A few days later, my distance vision was perfect, though my reading vision needed more time. I was informed that 20% of patients might need a laser touch-up if their reading eyesight isn't optimal. I experienced dry eyes and, during a post-procedure check-up, the optician recommended additional laser treatment, which was included in the original price. I returned a few weeks later for the laser treatment, which was quick and painless, comparable to the puff-of-air test. Alex Shortt also did the laser touch up, so you have consistency from start to finish.

A week later, my eyesight was perfect. I am thrilled with the entire process, from the initial lens replacement to the aftercare and follow-up laser treatment. My experience reassured me, and I want to reassure anyone considering lens replacement that it is painless and the results are incredible. I can't recommend it enough.

I had a lasik surgery with Mr Shortt about two months ago. I have been wearing contact lenses for nearly 30 years but with the lockdown (and age perhaps) my near vision has deteriorated so much I wanted to just correct the far vision. I went for a consultation at Optegra in central London and I was assigned Mr Shortt, who I checked out the bio beforehand (and felt really assured given his extensive experience at Moorfields). At the end of two-hour check up at the hospital I was given time to speak to Mr Shortt before the surgery. He made me completely at ease as he simply presented the facts and explained the benefits and risks. In the end I have decided to go ahead with his recommendation for a Presbyond to correct both the far and near vision. The surgery was smooth and a lot quicker than I thought. I could just feel I was in good hands. He explained what he was doing throughout the operation which helped me reassure me as I was extremely nervous. I had a couple of weeks of dry eyes (a typical symptom and Optegra gave me eye drops) but two months on that is also gone. I cannot believe I wake up and see the world without glasses nor contact lenses! The surgery with Mr Shortt is at the top of "what I haven't done it before" list. Life changing SMILE laser eye corrective surgery. Previously very short sighted (around -6.00 with astigmatism in both eyes) and reliant on contact lenses or glasses.

I felt immediately at ease after my initial consultation at Optegra. Meeting Dr Alex to discuss my options without it feeling like a sales pitch (other high street laser eye company consultations had done).

The actual SMILE laser surgery I couldn’t have been happier with - I couldn’t believe how quick it was and nothing like I imagined- Not burning smells etc, it felt like I was just watching a green light! Within 30-60 mins after treatment, my vision continued to get better and better. Within 24 hours and my day 1 check up, my vision was corrected and better than 20:20. Quite unbelievable considering how bad my eyes were!

Dr Alex assured me from start to finish. A year since surgery my eyes are still at 20:20 vision. Would highly recommend Optegra and Dr Alex Shortt for a professional service from start to finish.

It's now 4 weeks since my surgery. I had the lenses replaced in both eyes on the same day. I have nothing but praise for the Optegra team and in particular Alex Shortt. I was anxious about the procedure but I was reassured by the explanations and thorough preparation. All the pre op tests were completed with skills and kindness. The surgery was completed with good explanation during the procedure and great skill. 4 weeks on my eye sight is better than I've had throughout my life. I had my first cataract surgery about 3 years ago and then the second eye, mid last year, both done by Mr Alex Shortt, one of UK’s leading Opthalmic Surgeons. I can not say enough good about Mr Shortt. A highly experienced doctor with a great personality. The most important thing is that he listens to you very carefully at the initial consultation and then recommends the appropriate treatment and replacement lens type, in my case the the Carl Zeiss lenses which have been great upto now. The surgery itself is also done in the most professional and expert way, each lasting not more than 10 minutes. He puts the patient at total ease and comfort. I remember his answer to my question “is there a chance of anything going wrong” and his answer was “nothing that we can’t fix” and I found that extremely reassuring. My surgeries were done at Optegra off Harley Street, an amazing and extremely high tech eye hospital! The support and admin staff were all great and extremely helpful. I was absolutely devastated when I was told my eyesight had deteriorated so rapidly due to cataracts. I spoke to Optegra because my mother had her cataracts removed with great results and she was extremely happy. I needed my eyes to be dealt with quickly and efficiently. After my consultation I was operated within a week. I opted for both eyes at the same time and have not regretted it for a moment. Completely painless and stress free. I had bilateral cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lens implants performed by Mr Alex Shortt ten days ago. I cannot emphasize enough how professional, communicative, efficient and caring he has been all along. The surgery was carried out without fault and with clockwork-like coordination and precision. Very professional. Lots of time taken to explain the procedure in advance and no 'sales pressure' to proceed. The experience on the the day of surgery was very good and the result is amazing. My eyesight is better than when I wore contact lenses before.

Mr Shortt has a good manner and is calming when discussing your eye procedure. He is patient when listening to your questions and answering them thoroughly.

Very impressed with the results and the level of care I received.

I had been thinking of having ICL surgery for about 2 years, I could no longer wear contacts, my glasses were so thick and heavy and due to my high prescription laser wasnt an option for me. I was just so scared, I am definitely not a risk taker and am pretty squeamish! I decided to try optegra through a friends recommendation. I met with Mr Shortt and straightaway I felt reassured of his outstanding knowledge and ability. Just a month later I took a massive leap of faith and I was having the surgery.
