David Henley - con-man or crook?

David Henley is either an incompetent, unlucky & hopeless business man or a dishonest & unscrupulous con-man. We have been through a similar experience of paying a 50% deposit for a product that has never materialised. May you rot in hell - you horrible arrogant person

David originally requested that I remove this review (which I did) because he had "sleepless nights" over it, however, due to his lack of co-operation in assisting with a remedy, I have decided that I have to publish this review for the sake of other customers.

If we back-track to 2023 when I paid my deposit, David came to by home with a beaming smile and a sense of charisma that lit up the property. He sold me my 'dream shutters' and shared that they were a 'one of a kind'. He shared that he was showcasing his shutters at 'Grand Designs' and that he had various organisations approach him to purchase his shutters (of which he declined). David was a true salesman, he shared that the name of the Company, 'Elizabeth Henley' was in devotion to his late wife and that he was proud to be a British supplier.

Unfortunately, throughout the entire sales process, David omitted to tell me that he was extremely behind on production and that the lead time for the shutters would be in excess of a year. It is also clear that the Company/himself were undergoing cash-flow challenges.

By the time that I had actually done my research on Companies House and looked on Trust Pilot and other Google Reviews, it was too late. I had already given him £7,500 of my money as a deposit. David did not supply a contract nor even an invoice; sadly, now I know why. It is my true belief that I will never actually receive my shutters, or my refund for that matter.

After nearly a year of waiting, I decided that enough is enough and after his various excuses, I am truly fed up. David stated that he "wasn't a rich man" and that he was trying to "sell [his] machines" in order to supply me with a refund. He went onto say that the maximum refund that he could supply at this point would be "£100".

You should be warned that you do need power supply for these shutters (which is fine) - so - I requested my builders to wire electrical shutters to each of my windows. This came at a great expense of more than £3,000, however, I was willing to do so if I could have his shutters.

But, after months of waiting, I am now more than £10,500 out of pocket, I have hideous cables coming out of my windows and have had many sleepless nights; with absolutely nothing to show for it.

I am uncertain whether this is a legitimate company or not. I would suggest that you proceed with extreme caution. ⚠️

PAID DEPOSIT IN 2023 NOW 2026 STILL NO SHUTTERS
In May 2023 David from Elizabeth Shutters visited our property to have a look and give us estimate to fit our shutters. Since January 2024, I have been chasing David for installation date and David confirmed he is still in process of manufacturing them as he had some delays its only him and his other partner working on them as they are handmade by them two only. After In March 2024, David gave me another excuse after I chased fitting date, he confirmed his machine is broken he is waiting for new one and its very expensive. He also said he is waiting delivery of hinges some parts he needs to complete the manufacturing. We have lengthy conversations over the phone number of times where he said he is thinking of moving manufacturing to China as it will be quicker, he needs to show companies product and how its manufactured, so quality is not compromised as they are still made at good standards at faster speed. On 19th April David sent me pictures of some ready shutter (not mine he said he just sent these to show product), I circled around damage on them he called me and informed me these are not ready yet needs to be sanded down and painted again it’s not finished product as I started to worry about the quality of the work. Since I have chased fitting number of times still without shutters. I called David again on 24th July for date, but I received message back saying, “Will call in the morning machining for a while.” I asked again by message “when are you fitting, its end of month now.” I didn’t receive any reply. Next day on 25th July I sent further messages “I told him he is supposed to start fitting now he said 2 weeks ago 10-14 days” reply I received was again same “we are working on them; it is taking longer. On 26th July I sent another message as David confirmed over phone, he will start fitting them on Monday saying, “you starting to fit on Monday or not?” I didn’t receive any reply. Again, I tried to call but this is not answered I sent another message on 27th July saying, “you haven’t started fitting as promised again and didn’t give me date yet
David also Informed me over the phone, he had taken too many orders and as its just 2 of them, they are not able to complete orders, fitting are delayed lots of people are chasing him for completion or asking for refund. He didn’t think while taking orders demand will be high, product will be this popular and he won’t be able to fulfil them on time. This is same time when he said to me over the phone, he is making enquiries in China to see if they can manufacture over there with same quality to speed up the process and quality remains same. FRAUD AVOID

We met David at an exhibition in 2025 trading then as Elizabeth Henley Design Ltd we ordered in good faith, paid a deposit, had a home visit by David and received nothing accept excuses and hardship stories, always told we would receive a refund but it never materialised, there are many people who have experienced the same with EHD Ltd and now Smart-Tilt Ltd (many reviews) now trading as Smart-Tilt Ltd, look on companies house to see Smart Tilt Ltd Company number 15887033 previously traded as EHD Ltd (check out their reviews) Do not part with your money! David William Henley we would like our £2000 deposit back please

Deposit paid in Oct-22, and still waiting (now for a refund)...

I paid the deposit to David in good faith back in October 2022, after a very good and promising home visit by David.

Suffice to say now, over three years later, I now find myself out of pocket and without a shutter, and the whole episode has been one massive disappointment and has felt like a Carry On movie...

I would point out that at no point during his home visit to show me a sample shutter and measure up in October 2022 did he mention that this was a concept, a prototype shutter. He had suggested that if I was lucky I might have it in before Christmas and that they were working 6 days a week to get through the orders.

Since then I have been told multiple times that the shutter was ready and just being painted - not sure how many times my shutter must have been painted(?!). That I would have a fitting date confirmed within a week - nothing. We had even booked in a week one summer for an installation, which fell through. I was offered to option to install the manual shutter first and then the mechanical components installed at a later date several times ("fit your shutter then come back to power it up" are the words used) - although on accepting that proposal it never materialised. I feel like I have been fed a number of empty promises and proposals just to keep me from asking for a refund.

There have been periods when I would go three or four emails without a response or the courtesy of an acknowledgement. I was reassured that my shutter would not be made China, and then I believe that all output is coming from China (although I might be wrong on this).

When I finally decided that I couldn't wait any longer, I asked for refund in April 2025. This was acknowledged and confirmed that the deposit would be refunded. The same wait has continued since, with the same theme of placeholder responses and/or no responses. The last response I got was "Apologies I will get onto it asap, I have been very busy with the powered model and refinements" - this was in mid-August 2025 and I haven't heard a peep from him since.

I honestly don't know if I'd feel better to know that this was a scam, or if the time delay was just unforeseen / bad cashflow management. Either way I don't envisage getting my deposit back, and with so much time having passed I don't have many options. I feel that I've been punished by my patience and faith that I would eventually receive my shutter.

I note in Companies House that there is Elizabeth Henley Limited, and also Elizabeth Henley Design Limited - which has been changed to Smart-Tilt Ltd. My deposit invoice was issued by Elizabeth Henley Limited, but conscious that if the trade/assets are now in Elizabeth Henley Design Limited / Smart-Tilt Ltd then I might not ever get my deposit back.

And the fact that the owner has since added his own self-praise / complimentary reviews just really adds salt to my wounds...

RESPONDING TO THE REVIEWS.

Thank you for the review. The reality is we have a working smart shutter and is smartphone controlled, despite designing and manufacturing furniture for many years in the UK, we found manufacturing a smart shutter really difficult, prototypes worked but production models were another matter. This was an original design we did not buy in the parts we machined, sanded and painted all the parts. Some shutters were installed but to achieve consistent quality was difficult. It was an expensive exercise but a valuable one. We had designed and developed a shutter that gained international interest the problem we had is we just could not manufacture the shutters in the UK. and we did try really hard to make it work. The business model was to manufacture direct to the consumer, this stopped 18 months ago. We took our shutter design to China where it is now being manufactured to a far higher standard then we could have ever had hoped to achieve in the UK. Our Facebook page will evident the prototypes working. I have given this review 5 stars for effort and innovation, this shutter is very different from a S Craft shutter, we did not follow the conventional shutter design and so far the design has been well received. Clearly I regret that we could not make it a British manufacturing success and the inconvenience to some customers.
The Business name was popular, people liked it and we are small family business that has taken some bashing so we decided to keep the name and add the word design, for this purpose it made sense to create a new company, the manufacturing location, design and materials used had changed. Its very easy to use a platform like this to criticise and perhaps its justified in some cases but it can have wider implications, the closure of a business, lost revenue and so on where the intention was always to create a product that was British designed and manufactured that even the Chinese factories had never seen before.

A Year of Pain

I have held off leaving a review on this company for the longest time, feeling for the director that he was honestly trying to build an entrepreneurial business, but I see now reading these reviews that this company, and David Henley in particular, seems to have conned a whole list of people.

I can also see that the company website is no longer working, but a new company has been founded 'Elizabeth Henley Designs' with one of the same directors. Their new website says "the world's first smart shutters coming soon". Trouble is we were told that back in March 2023!

Our story is virtually the same to every other negative review on here. We had David come round in March 2023, promising shutters in around 8 weeks. No formal invoice produced, no terms and conditions.

It took us a year of chasing, of excuse after excuse, to understand what was happening with our shutters. The excuses we received were the same as what others have posted. At one point we were told our shutters had been made but didn't have the motors fitted, so I asked for a photo to give us some confidence... but alas no photo was ever produced.

In February 2024, enough was enough, we asked for a refund, to which David was unresponsive. As such, we filed a chargeback with our credit card company which thankfully then provided us back with our deposit. A year was wasted where we could have had shutters, and instead we waited and waited for shutters that would never come.

I cannot truly tell if Elizabeth Henley shutters are / were a genuine product idea/company or if it was a glorified scam. What I do know is that we were lied to for almost a year.

For people looking for smart shutters, we eventually managed to order with Shuttercraft, who do offer smart/powered shutters, and they're working in our home TODAY.

Warning to any customers of the 'new' company that's now been created, you will probably experience the same fate.

Serious questions about legitimacy of this company

I have had the same experience as almost everyone who has written a poor review here. As with others, my journey started nearly two years ago, in April 2023. I received the same home visit from David. I see he has told others the name of the company was after his deceased wife, I was told it was after his daughter. I had the same discussions about him presenting at Grand Designs, in fact I imagine the discussions were very similar. I paid my deposit in May 2023 and it is January 2025 and I have still not received working shutters. I was originally told there would be a 6-week wait. I have been waiting nearly 20 months. I have kept logs of dozens of calls and emails to David both to chase the shutters and to try and get a refund of my deposit. Each month, there would be a different excuse about either the app, motor mechanisms, gearing or something that is out of David's hands delaying my shutters from being made and fitted. My responses to requests for a refund were usually ignored unless I was able to catch David by mobile phone. I was always told the shutter delivery was just a month or two away. David did, in July 2024, finally agree to deliver the shutters. I was very excited that we had come to end of a really difficult journey (and we had been without window coverings for over a year at that point). On arrival, however, David informed me that the shutters he had brought were not the finished items. They were temporary, unfinished and without the motor. He could have informed me of this any time in the previous week and I would have refused delivery, which I presume he suspected. He promised these would be replaced with fully finished and functioning shutters a month later (August 2024), so I let him fit them. At the time, I did not realise they would be quite so poorly constructed, the boxes were unfinished and the louvres did not open and one broke instantly on trying to do so (the Louvre fits to the frame via a <1cm round metal fitting where the Louvre woodwork is <1mm around this fitting). As a result, we have had to leave them permanently closed, although they are not closed uniformly so they bleed a lot of light (rather pointless as shutters unfortunately). So after the fitting we went back to the monthly excuses of why fitting the finished shutters needed to be delayed, culminating in the 'move to China' and always avoiding my request for refund or delaying it until the next month (which makes little sense). I think it is clear to me now from various sources that delivery was unlikely to ever be made. Finally yesterday, I received a response from David suggesting I try and reclaim my money from my credit card company rather than him after probably 6-months of requesting a refund. I have now done so through section 75 of the consumer credit act 1974. I am not clear if this is straightforward fraud or whether David is just over his head with a product that doesn't work. What is clear is that he has taken a number of deposits from customers in good faith to fund his business without delivery of goods. I guess that will be up to Trading Standards to investigate.

I am singly annoyed by David giving himself 5-stairs here on Trust Pilot just two days ago. That is not how you communicate with customers you have failed. You write to them personally (usually with step by step updates if the products are delayed, which David did not do without being chased) and offer a refund if unable to deliver. You should not post a quasi-review of your own product on a review website.

Lastly, I cannot believe the good reviews posted here. Whilst, it is possible some have had a good experience, the poor reviews far outweigh the good ones and strongly mirror my own experiences. I will leave others to decide on their own the veracity of the gushing reviews. I am writing this review only to warn others of my experience.

Highly recommend this family run business

What can I say about this incredible service. Myself and my partner purchased a renovation project a couple of years ago in Essex. We came across Elizabeth Henley online as well as trade shows. After reaching out we invited them to see our project and discuss future plans. Their friendly and knowledgeable advice really pushed us in the right direction of how we could get the shutters that we really wanted. I wouldn’t trust anyone else to produce high quality shutters like Elizabeth Henley. Highly recommend this friendly family run business. Once again thank you for your incredible work. I placed my order with Elizabeth Henley…

I placed my order with Elizabeth Henley LTD (now trading under Elizabeth Henley Design LTD) via David Henley in April 2024. I asked if he could fulfil my order by early July 2024 which he confirmed he could and I proceeded on this basis. During the agreed installation week, I reached out for confirmation of the installation date and it went down hill from there.
4th July- In response to my text David advised he was still making my order
12th July- In response to my text, David advised he was still working on the order but could not confirm an installation date
14th July- In response to my message asking for a new installation date, David advised another 2-3 weeks was needed
31st July - In response to my text, David advised he was still painting the shutters and still failed to provide a new installation date
5th August- In response to my text, David advised he was still making the order
11th August- In response to my text, David advised he was still working on the shutters and couldn't confirm an installation date until they were ready
23rd August- I called David and requested an update. He then advised he can never really commit to an installation date (contrary to the fact he confirmed he would have my order ready by early July) and, that all installation dates are confirmed to customers in 'good faith' and that customers needed to wait to be contacted about an installation date once David had finished producing the shutters; again, contrary to what he initially advised when I placed my order. At this point I asked him how much time he needed as I needed the shutters fitted ahead of winter and wanted a refund on my deposit to place an order with another supplier if he could not guarantee an installation date. In typical form, he was no committal at which point I requested a full refund of my deposit. David agreed to issue my refund within 10 days and also confirmed this via email.
5th September- In response to my chaser email, David advised the deposit would be refunded in October as more time was needed to raise the funds.

To this date, I have not received a penny. He has shown a lack of empathy, professionalism and integrity and I'm yet to receive an update on when my deposit of over £4K will be refunded to me. David showed zero pro-activity and only provided 'updates' in response to communications initiated by me. Such a poor experience and I hope nobody else has to go through this.

Please, please, please proceed with caution here.

A long winding road into misery and lost money. Now expanding into Australia - his own words in writing and seemed proud of the fact. Then sent me this from his office wall.
“ It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

I said to him: “ Do you think that resinates with all the people you owe money too.
I have seen your accounts. There is no money in the business to run it properly.
And certainly you have sucked up everybodys deposits. But the honourable thing to do is to stop using other peoples money to fund your expansion and start returning peoples hard earnt money.
Stealing comes in many forms.
That sign is a hollow representation of how you view yourself.”

DO NOT APPROACH THIS COMPANY UNLESS LOOKING FOR MISERY.

Please be extremely careful

17 months of hell, for no product and a fight for a refund

Order placed, £850 deposit paid Feb 23
June 22nd 23 '....a little behind the encoder caused a problem, I will call early next week...' He didn't . Calls made and made chasing this up.
Nov 29th 23 "..I am waiting for the inserts which are the gears, they have been on order for a while .......'
Nov 23 Me '...When we last spoke on 11th October you promised my shutters would be fitted by the end of November. Clearly that's not going to happen . What is the situation now then, after 9 months.'
Nov 29th 23 ' ....We have added some features to the electronics based on some issues with calibration as well, please don't worry I will be with you asap ...."
April 28th 24 Me 'We've obviously lost every Thursday fitting date in March and April now , perhaps we could get a date for May agreed before I go away in June?? Is that possible in this long saga?"
'.....I think we are over the worst of the issues and I will be in a position to fit in May .... The finishing and painting are the bottle necks ....'
June 7th 24 I informed him I was starting small claims court procedure as he had yet again failed to attend and fit shutters. He did not say anything about , they are ready , they only need painting or anything , just stating
June 7th '.... Can you give me a few days then I will refund you in full'
June 18th 24 following my text message
'....Just bear with me for a couple of days I have some money arriving to pay your refund '
June 25th following my text message
'....there is only two of us in the business....
I will send something latest tommorow'

'Please don't right a review, I have e mailed TOM asking for it to be removed. You were not the only customer that didn't get there shutter' (mmm he didn't know who Tom was , accused Mark , but managed to email Tom anyway ??)

I'll leave it to you as to whether or not you are going to use this company and this person ......... But for me , 17 months of hell, a lack of honesty , no communication from him only ever a reply , no product and a fight for my money back !!

AVOID

AVOID! This is not an honest company. I do not believe the other reviews are genuine.
David took nearly £1000 for me as a deposit 11 months ago and I have neither shutters nor my deposit back.

You are foolish if you give your hard earned money to this man. You have been warned.

We received our Smart-tilt Shutters a few weeks ago and wow, what beautiful unique shutters they are, this is a jewel for your home. All friends and acquaintances who visit us are amazed that window decoration from Elisabeth Henley Shutters can provide such an upgrade. give to your home. We are therefore very satisfied with the end result, it is simply fantastic. Thank you very much David for the good advice and the beautifully delivered work. I therefore recommend everyone to choose these unique innovative shutters.
