A man on a dating app cultivated a relationship with a woman I know. He built an elaborate persona as a reclusive algorithmic trader. Step 2: The Referral. She, believing in his authenticity, shared his dApp referral link with me. The link carried her trust, which he had borrowed. Step 3: The Technical Facade. I connected my wallet via Web3. The interface was polished. The jargon was convincing. The dashboard moved. Step 4: The Hook. Small deposits worked. Withdrawals of test amounts were processed. Confidence was cemented. Step 5: The Investment. Over four weeks, I deposited my life savings—$120,000. Step 6: The Trap. Withdrawal attempt = immediate, permanent lock. Step 7: The Extortion. I was billed under legitimate-sounding categories: “tax liability,” “risk review fee,” “withdrawal processing.” Step 8: The Launder. On-chain analysis shows my funds were immediately routed through peel chains to exchanges. Step 9: The Impunity. Federal agencies, under-resourced and overwhelmed, provided case numbers but no meaningful investigation. This playbook is active and replicating. I am documenting it here to disrupt their cycle.
