Understanding the dynamic of using moving brokers

I am using Extra Miles Vanlines to move from PA to FL and I wanted to leave a fair and honest review of my experience for everyone else that has plans to move in the future.

At first, if you have never moved before your going to want to educate yourself between the difference of a moving broker and the movers themselves because there is a difference.

If you can't find a moving service and need a company to handle the logistics of finding a mover, then a moving broker might be a great fit for your needs. Realize that moving brokers will make some money on top of the cost of your move, which that is ok, completely understandable.

The one constructive criticism that I have is that the moving brokers should do a better job of the initial quoted estimate, but let me explain. Great upfront service to get a quote, go over inventory and get a price. Even after we adjusted our inventory and added more items, the price was still fair, no worries there.

On the pickup day, was surprise to see that the movers when they saw the actual inventory, the same one we listed, needed to adjust our price because our furniture was going to take up more space on their truck. So the quote goes from a number what we were prepared and budgeted for to something outrageous based on truck cubic feet, not our original estimate. So that was disappointing to say the least.

What could have been a reasonably priced move has become something way outside the scope of what we intended or had budgeted.

For me being disabled, I still needed help with the move, so I pretty much had to accept whatever the adjusted move number was to make this move happen or risk our furniture sitting there with no way of getting it moved.

Again, I am being very unbiased, I am not upset, just really explaining the whole process so that anyone else that needs to move can understand the process and set the proper expectations.

This company has potential if the pricing could be more transparent. If your charging the cubic feet of total weight of the moving load, thats ok, just start the estimate or original conversations setting the appropriate expectations.

Forged documents and gaslighting

Forged documents and gaslighting. This company and the other brokers they use are a scam. Crazy part is that everything they put in the storage, isn't all ours. 2400 for storage fees absolutely not and a shuttle fee that didn't have to happen with proof. This company along with fast vanlines and their other bs names are a joke. It's sad really.

This company is a scam operation

This company is a scam operation. They committed to arrive on the 22nd of October and failed to show up citing an “issue with a truck”.
They committed again to show up today between 12-4 and called at 3pm saying they’re still 5 hrs away and can’t make it. I asked for a refund for my deposit as we needed to finish the move ourselves and they declined. Apparently they are brokers not real movers. Don’t get scammed like I did.

In response to your explanation, your driver DID NOT SHOW. He called the next day admitting he was still hours away. You’re a scam.

Sandi, in the contract that you signed, it clearly states that days/times can be fluid as we are subjected to road conditions, weather, etc. We do not refund deposits to last minute cancellations as we already had our team en route.

I wish I could give them a zero

I wish I could give them a zero! Total scam from the moment they got my deposit. The movers they sent were rude and unprofessional. The moving guy had his feelings hurt because I would not let him walk around the house without being accompanied (to go into my closet).
They demanded money before they would take items off the van. After payment they removed some items, left muddy, dirty fingerprints in the walls and left my beds unassembled. Left the pieces all over the room, mattresses on the floor and left without telling us (guess that’s why they demand payment up front)
We could not even confirm if all our items came off the van

If I could give zero stars, I would.
This company is beyond unprofessional and operates like scammers. I hired them to move my items from Maryland to Houston, and the experience was a nightmare from start to finish.
• Damaged & Missing Items: Multiple belongings arrived broken, and some (including my ladder) never showed up. When I tried to file a claim, they sent me a fraudulent link that didn’t work. Despite being told a manager would follow up, no one ever contacted me. This was back in July, and I’m still waiting.
• Bait-and-Switch Pricing: I was originally quoted around $2,000, but after they loaded my things, they added more than $5,000 in extra charges. They refused to deliver my belongings until the inflated balance was paid.
• Deceptive Paperwork: I signed one document, but the copy they sent me afterward had a completely different amount listed—after my signature.
• Terrible Customer Service: The so-called “managers” have no customer service skills. Instead of helping, they were rude and dismissive, even threatening not to deliver my belongings if I didn’t pay their surprise charges.

This company is dishonest, untrustworthy, and preys on customers. Do not use them under any circumstances.
They take advantage of the customer!!!

Your move cost increased because you added additional items that were not disclosed in your original inventory. We have correspondence which shows you were aware of this.

This is part of a moving scam

This is part of a moving scam. They quote you a lowball price, then ask for a large downpayment to "hold" the price. The quote is worthless and nonbinding, because when the "mover" shows up, they charge as much as they can get, by thousands of $$ more. The quote is worthless and the downpayment is used to leverage the customer into paying whatever the mover demands, or lose the large downpayment paid in consideration for the quote, which again, is worthless. Moreover, the movers sent were unpermitted in California for an intrastate move, which both the broker and the mover are responsible for refunding, but neither are willing to do so so far, in violation of California law. The "moving company" they send arrives in an unmarked rental truck, then packs your things along with other households' goods, dragged through a dirty truck, then unloaded (and lost or damaged) into a warehouse (often used to hold customers' goods hostage until they pay the entire moving fee BEFORE delivery), and then delivered broken and ruined, in pieces, and with pieces missing, along with items entirely missing. DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICE.

They then patly answer any complaint on BBB, which doesn't investigate at all, and BBB then closes the complaint immediately on receipt of their response, allowing no time to respond to their answer. BBB helps this fraudulent company to maintain doing business with a B+ business rating, which is undeserved. They calculatingly answer each complaint while doing nothing to change their fraudulent operations.

I was contacted by Matthew Clark on line after searching for out of state movers. He asked me for a list of my possessions to move and gave me a quote. I accepted his quote and paid 50% down up front. He was supposed to contact me a week before the move for an update. I did not hear from him so several times tried to affirm the moving date. The day of the move another company showed up and told me that my possessions were under priced and the move would be over double the cost.at that point I had to pay them another $5000 or they would not move me. I was closing the next day so was forced to agree to this. My move went from $6100 to $13700 and they did a terrible job with polish speaking strong arm movers. I will never use an off brand name for any move I do again . Extra miles is a total scam. Do not use them at any cost.

This move happened four months ago, and we were never informed of any issues on this job by the customer. The customers had a lot more items than what was originally disclosed to us when taking his inventory. That, or needed Packing services, or excessive staircases is the ONLY reason a move cost will go up. The customer is aware of why his cost increased, he signed the Bill of Lading.Coast To Coast is a premier moving company with an excellent rating; mentioning the owner's Polish accent is rather offensive.

BUYER BEWARE. Arm yourself with info about ALL movers, rules, etc. I was a newby and suffered the cost! Once I was on onboard and they had my money the communication broke down despite their promises to be with me the whole way. They then subbed me out to another company, McKenzie, which apparently had different rules as to payment and time delivery. I was extremely confused.

Altho I claim much responsibility for my ignorance, they did have MY money, and once they subbed me out, they did not respond to my phone calls. McKenzie wasn't much better and I even got yelled at. When you have a small load they shift you from truck to truck and/or warehouses, which means more wear and tear. I got no extra insurance as I had a small load of mainly boxes and 2 pieces came back to me in pieces.

My grandmother's antique coat tree came back in 7 pieces, with a leg actually broken off. And another dear piece had all the legs detached. i was actually surprised they got all the pieces to me.

Make sure you google EVERYTHING on movers so you can ask the appropriate questions BEFORE you pay anything upfront. Once McKenzie loaded me, I forgot to ask for the inventory pages from the driver, so had NOTHING to prove they had taken my stuff except some cancelled checks. There were 3 days I didn't sleep AT ALL.

I did NOT get my inventory until they delivered it. Also, I was not called before delivery despite being told I would. The driver who came spoke no English, the truck had no signs on it. He just showed up. Luckily I was at home for there are fines if they try to deliver and you are not home.

My view is that since Extra Mile got my business and money, they should have been with me "all the way" like they said they would.

The below response from Extra Mile only concerns up until they subbed me out. They take no responsibility for subbing me out to McKenzie. I signed with Extra Mile, but they are responsible for hiring McKenzie.

I had thought PODS was expensive, but now I know better. Just know they do specials of 30% off so call and bargain. At least you have some control over your stuff.

Editing to add: George, we were happy to assist you, and we are so happy that you were pleased with the result. We wish you much happiness in your new home!
The original estimate has 2 pickup dates so when customer changed the dates, it needed a 2 day window. It is also standard industry practice to be charged for flights of stairs and shuttle service (when the truck cannot fit on the street). These are not out of the ordinary whatsoever, to us or any other moving company. Furthermore, this customer was given a $300 refund for any perceived inconvenience. We did not have to do that but we want every customer to be pleased with their move.

The worse. They raise the price when they came, even when we had discussed the move and they had told me i had more than enough space. Then they wanted to add extra charges like for an elevator even though they knew i lived in the 12th floor. And when they delivered they would not unpacked it from the truck until i paid. Robbery.

You guys are playing crooked games hoping to get people to cancel and keeping the deposit. You and this company are crooks and need to be exposed. Customer canceled because he had a 10x20 storage 50% full that was not included in the inventory. Obviously this causes the price of the job to increase. We tried to speak with customer, but were hung up on.

This was the worst excuse for a company


This was the worst excuse for a company I've ever dealt with. Extra Mile pulls the classic bait and switch on customers. The original estimate was based on an itemized list of furniture to move. The estimate was wildly underestimated, and they took first payment. Then they tried to jam us at the last minute with a huge bill and left my 77-year-old mother in another city with most of the furniture! I paid full price for very little that was agreed to in writing. Anyway, we had to hire another mover for the job after they took all of my money. A week before the move a "Quality Control" manager was supposed to work with us to finalize plans. He was supposed to call me on Monday after 3:00 PM. I never heard from him all week. I called and emailed him for details....the email I finally got back was "someone will call you" I completely got ripped off and I've worked many contracts in my lifetime. Very dishonest and horrible communication. Unbelievable they can stay in business. They only get a 1 --because there is not a zero. They put the tiny boxes we had for our cars on the truck and said we had "extra items"! What a lie and what a joke. The actual furniture was left behind. Run away as fast as you can from these buffoons!

Dear customer, thank you for providing us details on the household move.

According to our notes, we have worked things out the best way we could. An onsite manager was assigned to this pickup. They confirmed the customer had more items onsite but did not want to pay for the extra services. They instructed the moving crew to only load the original cubic feet to keep the price the same. If items were left behind, it was due to overflow onsite. The movers loaded the original cubic feet and the onsite manager assisted with the paperwork. Anything that was loaded - was loaded for the agreed upon price. Anything that needed to be left behind - was taken off the list to keep the price at the original rate. We are unable to over any discounts, the cost of moving stayed the same.

Total scam

Worst Company ever. They outsource to independent parties and there is no customer service. Book if you want to lose your money.

I booked a long distance move, we called and confirmed the items and cost twice. They assured us the cost won’t change.

On the day on move, they gave us a time slot of 12-4, they showed up at 6:30.

It was a third party contractor, who started to recalculate the price and doubled the price. We tried to call the customer service but as it was sat evening no one picked up the call.

We refused to pay double price. I had to book a different movers( which costed us move due to last min booking).
I tried to call the customer service, but the lady was so rude. She did not even let me talk. I asked to talk to a supervisor, but she refused and said the supervisor will call me back. ( As guessed no call back yet).

VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

Extra Mile Vanlines replied to this without even trying to figure out the customer and the issue.
Initially they replied that, change of price can happen on site and the quote given is not fixed. Then the next day they simply updated the post, stating the Customer never moved with us, without trying to get to the root of the issue. REALLY BAD.

⭐ (1 star) - Avoid at All Costs: Missing Items & Zero Accountability

Do NOT use this moving company. They lost more than half of my belongings and have provided zero follow-up or resolution after over a month.

What Happened:

Partial delivery on July 12, 2025 was missing more than half my boxes, including ~10 original paintings, multiple wardrobe boxes filled with vacuum-packed clothing/bedding, and many boxes of mementos and important household items.

They delivered items belonging to another customer (flat screen TV and box of framed artwork/photography).

I filed a claim weeks ago, yet when I follow up, the COO and Customer Service Manager I've been in contact with multiple times do not remember my case. Instead of replying with a proper response, they've had the claims department call numerous times asking if I'd like to file a claim. The fact that they don't even remember my case (or that I've already filed a claim) when I call tells me that this probably happens frequently.

Despite follow-ups several times a week from my side for over a month, I've received ZERO proactive communication about recovery efforts. No one has addressed the incorrectly delivered items, so I'm personally trying to locate their rightful owner.

It's impossible to tell if this company is dishonest or simply incompetent—either way, the result is the same: lost belongings, wasted time, and missing mementos and items that took a lifetime to collect. When you lose more than half a customer's possessions AND deliver someone else's property, basic professionalism requires immediate communication and corrective action. Instead, they provide complete radio silence.

This company clearly doesn't care about customers once they have your money. The lack of accountability after such serious errors is appalling. Save yourself the heartache and choose a reputable moving company.

Extra Mile is a bait and switch set up

Extra Mile is a bait and switch set up. You will be quoted the best price and a non-refundable deposit collected. This quote comes from the shipping broker. The actual movers that show up are not obligated to honor. My quote went from $1700 to $3300 when the movers arrived.

I was charged for items that did not go on the truck. My stuff was picked up, no problem there. but they STILL have all my stuff! They don't answer their phones. Who does that when running an office? I had a very nice tip for all 3 of the movers when they unloaded. I have a lawyer, a Federal Transportation guy, the BBB and the police. I am going after this company! I didn't deserve to be treated this way and I want what is mine !
