Important service
I don’t usually write reviews, but I feel like there’s very little real info out there about dog insurance in India, so this might help someone.
I have a 2.5-year-old indie + lab mix. Super active, but also the type to eat random stuff off the street 🙃. After one emergency vet visit (~₹9k for just scans + meds), I decided to look into insurance.
Why I even considered it
* Vet costs in cities (I’m in Bangalore) are no joke anymore
* Emergencies are unpredictable
* I didn’t want to hesitate on treatment because of money
The buying process
Honestly smoother than I expected. Mostly online:
* Filled basic details (age, breed, vaccination status)
* Uploaded a few documents + photos
* No crazy medical checks required (this depends on provider though)
Policy got issued in a few days.
Cost
I’m paying roughly ₹3–5k/year depending on coverage options.
Not cheap, but compared to even one surgery, it’s nothing.
What’s covered (in my plan)
* Accidents (fractures, injuries, etc.)
* Some illnesses (not all, read the fine print)
* Surgery + hospitalization
* Partial OPD in some cases
What’s NOT covered (important)
* Pre-existing conditions
* Some breed-specific issues
* Routine stuff (vaccines, grooming, etc.)
This is where most people get disappointed. It’s not a “cover everything” product.
Claims experience (this is what matters)
I’ve made one claim so far:
* Dog had stomach infection → ₹6.5k bill
* Submitted bills + vet prescription
* Took ~10–12 days
* Got ~70% reimbursed
No drama, no rejection. That alone made it worth it.
Downsides
* Claim process is still a bit manual (upload docs, follow up, etc.)
* Coverage isn’t as comprehensive as in the US/UK
* Some policies have a lot of exclusions buried in T&Cs
* Customer support varies a lot between companies
Would I recommend it?
If you:
* Live in a metro
* Would struggle with a sudden ₹20–50k vet bill
* Have an active or accident-prone dog
→ Yes, it’s worth it.
If your dog is older or already has conditions, you need to be careful because most of that won’t be covered anyway.
Final thought
Pet insurance in India is still early. It’s not perfect, but it’s getting better. For me, it’s less about “making money back” and more about peace of mind.
