The owners showed a complete lack of manners and regularly belittled and swore at staff. Every employee I spoke to was unhappy with how they were treated. The owner would manipulate working hours, asking staff to continue working even after their shift had ended, and would threaten their jobs if they refused.
Even when you’re doing a good job, she still criticises, raises her voice, and creates unnecessary conflict. During my interview, she also spent time speaking negatively about the previous gardener, which I found unprofessional.
There were also strict and uncomfortable rules around staff interaction. Employees were discouraged from talking to each other, even outside of work hours. We were not allowed to socialise, visit each other’s rooms, or even congratulate one another. Staff were monitored, and friendly interactions could lead to penalties.
I have never experienced such an unhappy and toxic work environment. Even long-term staff seemed deeply unhappy.
The tools and machinery provided were often unsafe to use. The tool shed was disorganised and contained hazardous chemicals and petrol stored improperly, without appropriate safety containers. There was also a lack of basic PPE (personal protective equipment), which made the working conditions even more concerning.
The living accommodation provided was overpriced and in poor condition. The toilets were not working, and the space was being used as a storage area while I was living in it. There were old side tables stacked around, and I was left with just a mattress on the floor without any proper covers.
To make matters worse, I was required to pay for my own uniform, as none was provided.
A staff member also told me that some workers were paid cash in hand and not formally registered as employees, which raises concerns about tax and legal compliance.
