I feel like it's natural to feel some anxiety when you're choosing a language learning program, especially an online one—there are so many apps, online tutors, courses etc., it can be hard to know what you're getting or trust that it's going to be effective. However, my experience with J12/Japanese with Aimee has absolutely blown me away and is easily the best decision I've ever made in my language journey! I started from square one in the Beginner course, and now as I'm finishing up the Intermediate course, I can't believe the progress I've been able to make through Aimee's teaching.
The J12 curriculum is manageable to stay on track with and very intuitive to follow. Aimee provides a strong, detailed foundation in Japanese grammar and then gives you numerous exercises and worksheets to apply those concepts to natural conversation. I really appreciated that the grammar lessons were accessible and easy to follow, but they weren't vague or simplified; I've always struggled with language apps and programs that teach you endless phrases without ever breaking down how the grammar or conjugation rules are working, meaning that I'm just memorizing phrases without really knowing how to adapt them or use them in context. With J12, I felt like we always started with the building blocks (whether verb conjugation, adjectives, etc) and that made it so much easier to build sentences and learn how to speak about yourself or topics that matter to you in Japanese!
Now, moving away from the curriculum itself, I have to highlight how much value comes from Aimee's teaching specifically. Especially seeing that Aimee has hundreds of students, I was skeptical about how much individualized attention I'd receive, personalized feedback, or if everything would feel very generic. But I have been so so pleased with how individualized the whole program has felt. Every week, I've been able to go into the course's community hub and submit my weekly worksheets for feedback. The feedback always comes FROM Aimee, not from an assistant or AI chat, and she never provides copy-paste or generic answers; she is always there to answer my questions or mark my work, no matter how niche or random the questions are! And another thing, if I have additional questions about her feedback, she answers those too. She really wants to make sure you understand and will keep talking with you until you do. I can't emphasize enough how much I've felt like Aimee is invested in me as a student, not just a number or customer.
The other aspect of J12 that I've loved is the community of students we have access to; in the feedback hub, while you can submit your work and ask questions to Aimee, it's also open to students of all levels in the courses, meaning that you're also able to gain additional practice by offering feedback on others' work, answering questions if you know the answer (which is always confirmed or corrected by Aimee, so you're never getting incorrect info), and just having a place to connect with other Japanese learners. Every week there are also 5-6 live conversation Zoom calls where you can practice speaking Japanese with other students and Aimee—as someone who is better at reading/writing, having this way to practice speaking and listening consistently has helped me practice those skills so much. And having the community aspect also gives me a sense of accountability; it's easier to bail on solo practice, but knowing other students are showing up to practice makes me want to stick with it too.
Overall, I seriously can't recommend Aimee's course enough. The biggest confirmation of the value for me was my trip to Japan after about 6 months of studying Japanese; while I'm not fluent by any means, I noticed such a difference between my first and second trips in how easily I could speak with people!! Everyone has different goals for learning Japanese, but for me one of the main ones was being able to talk with locals when traveling—and the experience of being able to do that really showed me how much my study with Aimee has paid off.
The J12 course is absolutely FANTASTIC!
I did the challenge round accelerated beginners course, and I learned more in 12 weeks than I did in the several years I tried to “casually” pick it up from other, more passive language learning apps.
Aimee’s course has a great structure that works even for busy schedules. Each week, she releases five modules (with each being around 5-15 minutes each) with worksheets, a quiz, and some small written or speaking assignments. Depending on the assignment length, I spent maybe 3-6 hours each week doing the work. This doesn’t sound like a lot, but after actually going to Japan, I can say that even this little bit helped a LOT. I could have small, pleasant interactions with locals, comfortably order food at a restaurant, and get help when I was lost and my phone battery was at 2%.
What helped the most about this course is getting direct feedback from an instructor. Aimee’s explanations were so thorough and she provided cultural context or nuances that you can’t get from a dictionary (which we often had to refer to as our assignments required us to find words we would use in our own lives, outside of the assigned vocabulary).
I honestly never thought I would be able to speak a lick of Japanese, but this course showed me what I was capable of even with just a smidgen of effort. I’m so grateful to Aimee and Nick for this fantastic course, and I can’t wait to join in on the intermediate class!
I joined the J12 Challenge round to light a fire under me to actually make progress on language learning. And boy did Aimee give me that fire! The course she offers is so extremely thought out and organized to give anyone coming into Japanese, regardless of level, a pathway to real progress and success. I honestly can't believe how much I've gained in just 12 weeks. Don't get me wrong, you have to do the work and sometimes really hard work, but the course ramps up in a way where it never feels impossible. It honestly gave me confidence in my abilities and belief that I can make real progress and not just memorize a few phrases. I would highly recommend Aimee's J12 course for any level of Japanese learning, even if you know absolutely nothing!
i don't think anything in life is a 'one size fits all', but when learning (anything, but especially) a language, two things stand out as hyper important: the teacher, and what you put into it.
i have a lot to say, but in case you don't read the whole thing, just know this:
most significantly, aimee's dedication, passion, enthusiasm, and encouragement is unmatched. she WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED. she genuinely, truly does. and that's obvious from the moment class begins. and when someone cares that much, it flows into everything else.
what aimee has created through j12 is truly magic iRL. at the start, she insists that her structure of 15 minutes a day, 5x a week, for 12 weeks, is enough to gain a foundational understanding of japanese. before her course, this felt almost 'too-good-to-be-true', but i promise you, every bit of it is true. twelve weeks later, and i can read and write a full page of japanese (kanji included (漢字)) and recorded myself speaking for over five and a half minutes. if you've every tried to learn japanese before, you'll know that this is INSANE.
japanese is drastically different than english, and it is not a simple one to one exchange as it can be with some languages. and yet, i can communicate naturally and honestly about MY life. something with which google translate can't accurately help.
the structure of her class is to watch a short video a day (usually under 10 minutes), and apply what you've learned with her provided practice questions. if that's all you can manage, no problem! each lesson builds on itself and you'll slowly grow what you're able to communicate. if you want more, also no problem-- as your comprehension expands, there are a number of ways to dive even deeper.
aimee offers extra resources for varying potential desires - travel, anime, n5 test, etc. and, my absolutely favorite part is the community. so far i've only participated in the challenge round, which is a bit more intensive, but allows you to read, listen to, and engage with work from fellow students from all the different levels! a fantastic way to practice what you're learning.
BUT WAIT, there's more! there are a handful of weekly conversation sessions to join as an opportunity to SPEAK with other people at the same level as you. it's common to feel intimidated at this idea, but it's loose and fun and all about you. there aren't hard rules, you can't do it wrong, and everyone is SO encouraging and helpful. (and people speak english after they practice japanese, too, so don't let anxiety deter you!) she also has weekly FAQ calls where you're able to ask any type of question you have, and aimee will answer in depth. (and you are able to join these even after the 12 weeks has concluded!)
finally, whether you're doing the challenge round or doing 12 weeks on your own, aimee will give you individual and personal attention, every. single. time. if you want feedback on your week (take advantage of this!!), you can ask her for feedback and she personally will offer insight as specific and in depth as you want. whatever will benefit YOU, she will do. this is not something to take lightly.
aimee is not a native japanese speaker, but honestly, that contributes to why her method is so effective. they say wounds turn to wisdom. well, aimee struggled for years to learn japanese, and figured out what is and isn't helpful, and how to overcome common obstacles. she failed so that we don't have to.
money is a difficult thing to universalize; value is subjective, so who is to say what something is worth in the life of someone else? so i speak only for myself here, but i believe j12 is worth much more than she charges. i will pay again and again until i go complete every level. i don't even have a steady income and this is a no brainer for me. i'll make it happen because learning japanese lights me up and there is no one i would rather learn from than aimee.
i probably shouldn't put personal info here but genuinely, tayreyk on reddit - if you have ANY questions, please feel free to reach out. happy to address any questions or concerns. if you want to learn japanese, i want it for you. and i doubt you'll find someone more in your corner than aimee.
j12で勉強しているから、私の日本語は良いですよ!
(my japanese is good because i'm studying through j12!)
This is a terrific way to learn Japanese. In just 15 mins a day it fits into your lifestyle and you learn useful vocabulary and grammar based at your language level (I was a beginner). I cemented my knowledge of hiragana and katakana and can now read and write more words than expected ready for my next trip to Japan. I’m even progressing well with kanji. Aimee and Nick are super helpful; you receive excellent feedback which further assists your understanding of the language. I can now speak in full sentences. The conversation classes are geared at your level, there is no judgement, just learning and a genuine desire to pass on knowledge and help everyone improve. Thank you
I started this course knowing only the most basic polite travel words, please, thank you, excuse me, and how to order my morning coffee (maybe a beer or two 😄) and 12 weeks later, I wrote two full A4 pages of my own story and delivered a 5-minute speech in Japanese. I still can't believe it.
I kept scrolling past Aimee's ad on Facebook for a while, and finally thought... why not. Best decision I ever made!!!
Aimee is one of those rare teachers who makes you feel completely at ease. No question is ever too basic. She has a gift for explaining things clearly and patiently, no matter what level you're at. Her warmth and understanding genuinely makes the learning process so much less daunting.
The course itself is brilliantly structured, and the support from Aimee and Nick is incredible. There are weekly Zoom calls to practise your new skills in real time (I didn't manage to make them this round, but I absolutely will next time!), and a wonderful community of fellow students to learn with. The resources are yours for life! You can log back in and revisit the materials whenever you like, and even after you finish your course, you can keep chatting in the Zoom calls and practising your new language skills with other students!. Who else offers that?! That said, I'm not stopping, I definitely plan to keep going through the levels..
I'd previously tried TAFE and various apps and never got close to this level. If you're serious about learning Japanese, there is simply nothing out there like this. This is honestly an amazing course, the other reviews speak volumes 🙂
どうぞよろしく、よろしくおねがいします。
I’ve had an amazing experience with the Japanese with Aimee course. I spent over 10 years trying to improve my Japanese on my own with very little success, but after enrolling in this course in January, I’ve seen incredible progress in just three months.
I’m so grateful that Aimee has created such an effective and supportive language program. Not only does she provide well-structured modules, but she also hosts regular weekly Zoom sessions to support and guide her students.
If you’re considering this course, I highly recommend enrolling—you won’t regret it. It has truly helped me regain my motivation for learning Japanese.
I completed the Advanced Beginners J12 week course. You will learn A LOT in this course. You can print out all the modules and write your answers on (as I did). It's an online portal with videos to watch & where you submit your homework. It's writing, speaking, & listening. Plus you learn hiragana, katakana & kanji. Aimee & Nick are always there to answer your questions & give feedback to you (and very timely might I add). The J12 community (the other learners) are always there to inspire you & give you help as well if they can. They did a fantastic job with putting this course together. The course for me was intense - there is a lot of content to learn. Personally, I think a bit too much content, and would have preferred it to have been less, but I stuck it out, and can honestly say my Japanese has improved amazingly. Working full-time, and studying part-time was full-on for me, and I did a lot more than the 15 minutes per day for homework - hours (maybe that's just me!). I would like to study more.
Give it a go - you will be surprised how much you learn.
Mata ne!
I just finished taking the beginner's course, and everything about it completely exceeded my expectations. In just three months, I've gone from not recognizing any hiragana or katakana to being able to write almost a whole page using hiragana, katakana and kanji; understand grammar structures and particles; and form my own sentences with confidence.
After trying so many methods and apps (and always ending up burning out and quitting to just restart again a year later), finding Aimee's course has been a godsend. It just works. Show up for 15 mins a day (or more, if you want to!), do the work, and you'll get there. Aimee is such an incredible teacher, and the course is set up in a way that builds on itself and makes learning easy and fun (but still challenging!) She provides personalized feedback for every learner and is incredibly kind and encouraging.
Beyond the learning itself, Aimee’s course has really helped me build consistent study habits, which has always been a huge challenge for me. I feel much more confident moving forward with my studies and staying consistent with my learning.
I’d recommend this course to anyone who wants to not only improve their Japanese, but also build a consistent daily routine around studying it. It’s been amazing for both!
I just wrapped up the J12 Challenge round with Japanese with Aimee. やった!J12はとても面白いですよ!
It was 12 weeks of my brain feeling SO satisfied. I learned SO MUCH Japanese.
By the end of the challenge, I wrote a THOUSAND CHARACTER piece and was able to express myself naturally (and even add humour. )I made my homework my own by adding in lots of doodles and silly anecdotes and was able to share these in the community feature of the class! I made several friends in the course and I’m so excited to have seriously begun language learning in this environment. Before joining, I read a few reviews-- I had seen lots of ads on instagram and wasn’t sure how legit this was but it is the real deal. Such a joyful experience I can’t recommend it enough. Aimee is a wonderful teacher and her feedback is super specific and clear. She’s also a blast on the zoom calls. Wonderful sense of humour and very positive vibe.
Please please please give it a go if you're considering learning Japanese.
Deciding to learn Japanese through Japanese In 12 with Aimee, has honestly been one of the best decisions l've made this year! ♡( ^ω^ )
After only 12 weeks I'm confidently submitting detailed written projects and speaking Japanese!
The course structure is so well designed, the
community is amazing and Aimee is an incredible teacher who really, truly cares! Between her and her amazing team there is always as much support provided as you will ever need! (*´∇`*)
With Aimee’s various courses you can start at any level! You can learn at your own pace or compete in a challenge round for a chance to win a flight to Japan! (*^o^*)
I've never learned a language before, especially one as complex as Japanese, but Aimee makes it as easy as possible and you will actually LEARN PROPERLY, which is the key to successful language learning!╰(*´︶`*)╯♡
10000 out of 10 recommended! ♡
This course is truly amazing. The resources and thought that has gone into each module is clear. Aimee’s explanations and activities for each week are so fun and varied. My Japanese has improved so much thanks to Aimee’s J12 courses.
This method works! If you’re looking for a course with actual support, accountability and bang for buck, I highly recommend this one! I joined J12 in the challenge round with the incentive of winning a prize in the end, but I can truly say that after 12 weeks, the best prize is what I have taken away from this course– CONFIDENCE! Aimee is an incredible teacher, she has a way of explaining grammar in a practical way that I’ve not experienced in other courses. The worksheets, the talk sessions and weekly modules give tonnes of opportunity to practice in manageable chunks. Yes, it does take consistency but this truly is a method where you will be rewarded for the effort you put in. Also note: even if you meet the minimal requirements you will feel a real sense of accomplishment at the end with more tools to use! As someone who has tried a tonne of other methods including apps, private tutoring, Japanese school, online classes, I can honestly say that this has been the one that I’ve stuck with and kept me motivated to keep going.
On top of the teaching support, the team are fantastic with admin support! I was accidentally charged a conversion fee when I joined, all it took was an email and the charge was reversed straightaway. Whenever I have emailed the team, the response has been almost immediately.
I can honestly say that this course has been the best investment of 2026. Thank you Aimee, and Nick!
it will be tough but it will be worth it. just dive in and keep yourself focused on your goal. it is accessible, affordable, and you are in constant contact with the teacher. you even have your own cohort of people in the same skill level as you working alongside you. ganbatte!
I took the February 2026 challenge round at the high intermediate level. For transparency, I saw a promo going on around the last few days before enrolment began. I believe it was a -20% discount (looking back on receipt, I had paid $340 USD). As a Canadian this worked out to about ~$463 CAD.
For background, I'm someone who's been self-studying Japanese for some time (and somehow managed to get this far) through free materials online. The world is truly your oyster when it comes to accessible Japanese learning materials!
For folks who are unsure of the price, if it's something you're able to afford I recommend this course. Through the hub platform you're able to see students from all the levels and it's amazing to have seen folks in the beginner levels become able to read in 12 weeks!
What the course does is reduce friction in studying and can help you get past that initial hump. Once you land those basics in the 12 weeks you're set to continue on.
That said, as a high intermediate, the value of this course was in submitting work for Aimee's review. Aimee is a professional translator and someone who's been in the position of learning Japanese as an English-speaker, her feedback is rooted in helping you see where you're making English-cisms in Japanese and help you see what your pitfalls are. Her feedback is also genuinely targeted to where you're at. She'll recommend swaps that make sense for what you know. Something I really enjoyed was that I got to see her feedback tailored to other folks who are further along in their Japanese, and those nuggets of information have been super helpful!
It's also very rewarding to take this course alongside so many other folks. If you've been someone studying alone it makes for a great change of pace. Other folks can pop in with an answer if you have any questions as well.
At the end of the day you still have to show up for yourself and put in the work where you can, but the course truly makes it enjoyable to study. I did this as part of the February 2026 challenge round, so the leaderboard aspect definitely was very motivating!
I really enjoy my time studying japanese with Aimee. I learn so much in a short amoung of time and she explain well. In case we have question, she's still there to reply and help us to understand the lesson. We go through the weeks with other students of our level and the community is so kind and helpful. If I have the opportunity, I will clearly doing the next level with Aimee again. 100 % recommend if you want to learn Japanese.
Enrolling in Japanese with Aimee is the single best decision I ever made towards improving my Japanese. In just three months, I've gone from thinking I might be able to speak a bit (someday) to actually speaking, reading, and writing Japanese, all thanks to Aimee's incredible talent as a teacher.
Aimee's courses really stand out from every other way I've tried to learn over the years (and I've tried everything from books to apps, big brand names to indie DIY resources). Her lessons are very carefully tailored for English speakers learning Japanese, which made a huge difference for me. Also, she's not kidding when she says you can do this in 15 minutes a day (sometimes less!). The asynchronous teaching approach really does let you fit this material into your life where it needs to, even and especially as your schedule changes.
On top of all that, Aimee is an incredibly attentive teacher. The feedback she provides on written assignments is thorough and personal, and she gives that same care and attention to even the smallest most random question you might ask her. In all my time studying across multiple undergraduate and graduate degrees, Aimee's feedback has been the most prompt and helpful I've ever gotten, and I don't say that lightly.
I'd also be remiss if I didn't talk about how accessible this course is for all types of learners. If you learn best with others, there's coworking sessions and conversation sessions multiple times every week (no mean feat with students around the world!). You're also very much empowered to do your own thing and just touch base with Aimee for feedback when you want it if that's more your style. It's seamlessly inclusive, and that's a lovely thing.
I've been singing Aimee's praises to my friends for months, and I'll keep doing so long after I've hit fluency. If you're considering this one, do yourself a favor and go for it. You have so much more to gain than you can even imagine. エーミー先生、ほんとにありがとう!❤️
I can’t recommend Aimee’s 'Japanese in 12' course highly enough. It has honestly been such a wonderful experience from start to finish.
The quality of everything included is exceptional — from the beautifully structured course material to the incredibly generous bonuses, live calls and the abundance of extra resources. You can tell so much care and intention has gone into every detail.
What stood out most to me was Aimee’s personalised feedback. It didn’t feel like a generic online course at all — I felt genuinely supported, seen and guided the entire way through, which made such a difference to my confidence and progress.
In just 12 weeks, I’ve gone from being a complete beginner to feeling comfortable reading and speaking basic Japanese. I’m definitely not fluent (yet!), but I now have enough understanding and confidence to actually use the language and get by on my next trip to Japan — which feels amazing.
If you’re thinking about learning Japanese and want something that is both high quality and deeply supportive, I truly can’t recommend this course enough. ✨
I signed up for my first J12 course level last year after reading reviews, so I know how important it is to read honest reviews. So here goes…
It’s fair to say learning languages is not a strong skill for me. But after doing 2 levels with Aimee and J12 I am still absolutely loving it, and have learned an incredible amount, enough to feel pretty confident communicating when visiting Japan again. The level is appropriate for my ability and the bite sized modules and tasks are challenging enough but not impossible. Feedback is prompt and personal, and very encouraging. The member community is also amazing, friendly and supportive, and with regular weekly conversation sessions you really have nothing to lose and everything to gain! I highly recommend J12 Japanese with Aimee 🤩🤩
I've tried it all over the years - apps, tutoring, textbooks, tafe courses etc. I even completed a Uni semester exchange in Japan. After that, I made no effort to continue my language learning. This year (almost 15 years later!) I decided to start again. I found Aimee's course challenge through an instagram post and decided on impulse to join.
I chose Aimee because she is a native english speaker who has been through the journey of becoming fluent in Japanese. I've had wonderful native Japanese teachers in the past, but I was curious if learning from Aimee would feel different knowing her path was similar to what mine will be.
The course was more than I hoped for. The login area for the modules is easy to navigate and looks great, and there is an amazing community/feedback area in the backend that operates much like a fb group or discord. If you like to learn socially and need community interaction to help you with staying accountable you will love this course. Aimee and Nick are always active with answering questions and feedback.
I thought the topics covered were extremely useful in continuing my learning journey and the modules are bite-sized so you don't feel overwhelmed, but there is still enough work to keep you busy. It's not mandatory, but having a weekly deadline to submit and do all the weekly tasks really helped me stay consistent and committed to this course. There is a good balance of spoken and written tasks to complete, and each module includes a video of Aimee going through the lesson with an accompanying pdf. She also provides many other additional resources.
Aimee's manner of teaching was incredibly effective for me, and she is probably the only teacher who has led me to improve and progress so quickly. I feel confident to self-study now and look forward to moving to the next level of the course with Aimee.
If you are sceptical about online courses, I completely understand, but this one is the real deal. Especially if you struggle to study independently and need someone to guide you.
Aimee will be your biggest cheerleader on your journey and will help you not only to learn Japanese, but also find confidence within yourself.
