It's a good gym but it really lacks some of the attachable equipments for cable machines. Also the music is way too loud specially late night where the gym is almost empty. No one really listens to gym music so I don't get the point of it being so loud I can hear it through my noise cancelling headphones. But if those two things weren't an issue It would be a 5 star for me

we love coming to this gym as there’s plenty equipment to use and there’s something for everyone! it’s 24/7 so accessible for everyone! the workers are lovely and are always willing to help if needed! Thank you JD gyms

Gym is class, PT’s are great.

Ive been a member for years. Staff are friendly the equipment os always clean and tidy. Equipment issue are normally resolved quickly.

Absolutely love this gym, the staff are so friendly and helpful, I was really nervous joining, but it was the best thing I've ever done. I have met some amazing gym buddies and do classes together, they have a new morning classes timetable coming up in October, lots of variety, so excited to try some of classes out.

Overall this gym is good and does it's job, but I have a few things to point out that I've noticed and what made me cancel my membership back in 2023.

Pt 1• No or Very Poor AC
As I spend most of my time in the main cardio room, whether on the weights or treadmills, I happened to notice that there was a huge lack of AC in these hot summer months.
Especially on the treadmill, there is no airflow, the only vents pointing at machines are the stairmachines.

I think if there was an improved AC system especially around the treadmills and ellipticals that people could spend longer using them (most of the time I only step off because I'm too hot or sweaty)

Pt2• Old Weights and Missing Parts
Surely from wear and tear over the years but I've encountered a handful of the equipment in the cardio room with missing numbers on the weights, weights that stick together when lifted, and one machine with missing parts entirely, not sure what the machine is called but it's the one with two sides of a board full of workouts. Most ab workouts (if I'm recalling correctly) are out of commission because of these missing parts.

Pt3• The price raise
When I first joined in 2023 I'm pretty sure the price was somewhere comfortably around £20 maybe a bit more, which I think is fair for the quality of the gym.
However, I noticed this month when signing up again that it raised to £30, which I think is just a bit /too/ much for what it offers. However, I understand that this is from the perspective of someone who exclusively uses the cardio room, I can't say if the classes, downstairs weights or the ladies gym makes up for this or not.

Because I don't want to end on a sour note, here are some positives too.

Pt1• The Music
I usually listen to my own music, but in the moments I don't I never find I dislike any of the songs playing, and they always feel fitting for whatever workouts I'm doing at that moment.

Pt2• The Changing Rooms
Although the showers could stand to be more private, and a female cleaner rather than a guy, I understand these are petty requests, and the changing rooms are otherwise comfortable and convenient.

Trying to cancel and they take 21 days to stop payment.
Then 14 days to reply to a complaint about taking money you asked them to stop.

Well equipped gym, especially after the recent makeover. Only gripe is ignorant people leaving plates loaded up on the machines instead of re-racking the weights. (Because the next person to use the seated row for example might happen to need 60kg per side when they start!) Not the gym's fault though, it's just a sad reflection on society these days unfortunately. I just get my headphones on and get done what I need to and get gone.

Absolutely love JD Body Combat classes. Fantastic instructors at Benton, North Shields and Shiremoor. Evening classes are perfect time at 6.15/6.30pm. Awesome workouts with Jo, Connor, Eshan and Claire every week. The reason I joined JD! The reason I stay!

Id just like to comment on the staff here, they are very friendly and helpful especially the Manager Tiffany ,Connor and Essien also I’d like to add that the equipment is always clean and in working order. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for something within the area.

One dislike I have about the gyms are people’s terrible gym etiquette, nobody puts weights away and clears up after themselves which is then time consuming for me to have to clear up other people’s weights before beginning my own session

Good large gym at a reasonable price. However machines take an eternity to be fixed. One free weight leg press which was broken most of February is now broken again when ask about times for fixing staff just say don’t know.

Only gripe is people coming in the gym and working our in their work gear - Hi Vis or covered in paint etc etc

Shouldnt be happening - People could be working with harmful chemicals. Asbestos etc.

Staff should be getting a grip of this.

Other than that it’s a pretty good gym.

Friendly people and machines easy to understand open early until late great for the working around work

JD Gym North Shields
Met some lovely people especially Carole who is a great ambassador for these classes. It’s a bit daunting being new to the area not knowing anyone. Carole was great explaining the classes and encouraged every step of the way. The PT’s taking the classes are great. Don’t be afraid to join in any class as people are very welcoming.
