I'll admit that this novel made me feel something. The way it depicts community and family coming together struck a chord with me. Seeing how people overcame fear and still found optimism makes you feel as though you were there with them. Every page feels genuine and honest despite its straightforward writing style. You can tell that Marylou Rhodes lived the story she wrote. Towards the end, I saw that I was slowing down because I didn't want it to end. This novel is so lovely and realistic that it sticks with you long after you finish it.

It's a very moving tale. I initially assumed it would be all about the illness, but in reality, it's about people and their resilience. Frank and Lucy's love felt more than simply words on a paper.

You know what hit me different about this book? It's not really a polio story. I mean, yeah, polio's the big bad. But really it's a story about how regular people just... keep going. Frank goes back to work. Lucy does the therapies. The kids help wring out washcloths. Nobody's being a hero. They're just surviving Tuesday. And then Wednesday. And then thirty more years. That's what got me. No big speeches. No drama for drama's sake. Just a family putting one foot in front of the other until the worst days were behind them

That's what stuck with me. The silence. The stuff too painful to write down. Marylou gives you just enough to imagine the rest. And your brain fills in the gaps with the worst possible things because you know that's probably what happened. A book that makes you do the emotional work yourself? That's rare. That's special. That's haunting in the best worst way."

This book made me look at my own family different.

The characters had a genuine sense of hope, raw emotions, and vitality. I particularly admired how the author struck a balance between the beauty of human connection and tenacity and the brutal realities of illness.

She writes with such sincerity that it feels like she’s confiding in you personally. Every page overflows with emotion, and even through the toughest moments, you find yourself rooting for them.

She writes in such a genuine way, as if she were sharing a personal tale with you. Every page is filled with so much emotion. Even in difficult times, you can't help but support them.

I think Rhodes has created a kind of unique ""magical realism"" that makes the modern person go back and LIVE the life in 50s! I mean this is something not every writer could do. She is wonderful in transforming the imagery and the rawness in front of your eyes. Highly recommended of course.

You can tell Marylou Rhodes understands emotion on a deep level. Every page feels lived-in and sincere. By the end, I just sat there thinking about how far we’ve come, and how stories like this remind us of the strength that’s always been there.

I normally read light fiction, but this novel drew me in. The time period, the difficulties, and the victories all seemed so genuine. Rhodes is a gifted storyteller. Hats off to the courage.

That's precisely what Frank & Lucy do, they are approachable, sincere, and passionate. Mary Lou Rhodes vividly depicts the polio era in a way that is both profoundly emotional and instructive. My pupils were able to relate to the characters, pose insightful queries, and perceive history as relatable rather than impersonal. This book encourages empathy, resilience, and introspection in addition to providing information. I will continue to suggest this type of tale year after year.
