If I could give them zero I would. Our mortgage got transferred to them. Our first payment went up $400 when nothing had changed. They said they received it like that but we have proof that that isnât correct. They keep getting our county wrong as well. They say theyâll look into it. Itâs been two weeks and still nothing. I am beyond frustrated with them. $400 extra each month adds up.

M&T is the best bank I ever banked with. Iâm nearing 70 years old so Iâve belonged to many banks in my life.
Iâll sum it up. Even though Iâm far from well off, basically living month to month on Social Security anytime I reached out to M&T for a variety of reasons I am treated like Iâm the wealthiest customer they have. I really appreciate the customer respect and very patient and friendly customer service I am giving.

All as I can say they get triple thumbs down on any and all correspondence using the phone. What a waste of time!!!!!!!!
In an attempt to pay my loan off
In an attempt to pay my loan off, it took 4 phone calls. 2 of the four phone calls I was not able to understand due to a language barrier and asked to be transferred to someone else and they said they did not have that option so I had to keep calling until I got someone I could understand. After paying my loan off they will not send me anything proving I paid the loan off!!! What!!! This is ridiculous! I gave the $12,000.00 and they will not give me a receipt. I will NEVER use this bank again. If you give a bank that much money and they refuse to give you a receipt, HUGE RED FLAG FOLKS!!!!!!
Bankruptcy attorney fees added with no clear explanation
I have an existing FHA mortgage serviced by M&T Bank and am currently in Chapter 13 bankruptcy. I recently learned that approximately $1,950 in bankruptcy attorney fees/costs were charged or requested on my mortgage account.
When I asked for a clear breakdown, the only document provided through M&T/SouthLaw was a one-page ledger. It listed vague entries such as âMFR feesâ and âMFR costs,â but did not explain the specific attorney work performed, why the charges were assessed, invoice details, dates of legal work, or whether the fees were approved through the bankruptcy process.
This happened during an extremely difficult financial period while I am unemployed and trying to keep up with my mortgage and household expenses. In my opinion, M&T should not be charging or requesting large bankruptcy attorney fees without clear, itemized, verifiable documentation. I would strongly caution mortgage customers to review every fee and demand proof for any legal charges added to their account.

Absolutely THE WORST bank. I have never had any hassles with a bank until M & T took over. Started on Day 1 when they insisted there would be no problems with the takeover of my old bank. Their errors cost me hundreds. Their employees have a horrible attitude and are unhelpful. Their tellers have you fill out paperwork and as soon as you are done, oh they forgot the system is down, go use the ATM. They will not help with disputed charges on your debit card. They don't care if is not valid, they offer no assistance whatsoever. Go to any other bank. M & T is worse than any of them.

To not be able to access your money or make business transactions makes this bank irrelevant to its necessity. Cannot wait to transfer all my money somewhere else. Iâve been with this bank for over 7 yrs and longer with accounts at navy federal, Chase and TD and the M&T has been most consistent n having issues.
Escrow Department Failure
Description of Error
Disclosed Payment: According to my finalized Closing Disclosure (CD), my total monthly mortgage payment was legally disclosed as $4,995.47, which explicitly included a monthly projected escrow payment of $1,267.60.
Actual First Bill: Despite the binding disclosures signed at closing, my very first monthly billing statement demanded a payment of $5,799.00.
The Cause: Upon investigation, M&T Bank's escrow department failed to realize prior to closing that the escrow account was in a shortage position.
This shortage should have been calculated, straightened out, and properly disclosed in the loan documents before closing. Because it was not, the bank is now improperly attempting to collect a payment that drastically deviates from the legally binding closing documents.

Wouldn't recommend. I called 302-724-2440 7x and LM 3x. No one called me back. I sent a text 2x and got no response. When I went to the branch, I was told that M&T doesn't have a text service, but the texts went through on my phone. I emptied my checking account because M&T couldn't close the account because two charges "items" hadn't "cleared". I have to visit the branch AGAIN in order to close the account -- an unnessary and inconvenient errand. Also, when I signed up for the account, the representative didn't give me a card for the local phone number. And the service was exceptionally slow and the rep didn't seem to understand that my time is valuable. There was only one teller and SHE was also exceptionally slow.
M&T Bank stopped over the phone payments
M&T Bank stopped taking over the phone payments for my mortgage. That was always easy and convenient to use. And they replaced it with a shit automated system that regularly drops the call on you. It also makes it difficult if you're trying to make an extra payment. Or an additional amount to be applied to the principal. Horrible customer service.
Horrific experience
My mortgage loan was transferred here. They never reached out, never sent a bill or a welcome packet like they were supposed to. I had to use a third party tool to figure out WHERE THE ___ my mortgage was. I found out it's owned by M&T bank now, great! I go to use their online portal, it's genuinely so difficult to navigate. I am a SOFTWARE ENGINEER and I could barely navigate it. The entire thing is built to try to trick you or scam you into sending them MORE money and make it as difficult as possible to do simple tasks (i.e. JUST PAY MY MORTGAGE). I could code a better website in my sleep after a long weekend. But also, I guess if the goal is to scam susceptible older people into enrolling in autopay or paying additional sums on their mortgage that they don't mean to, they're doing great! The website actually REFUSED TO LET ME PAY WITHOUT ADDING ADDITIONAL MONEY TO MY PAYMENT which feels illegal! Awful website, horrible company, if I could rate it lower, I would. I hope whichever bloated financial executive is in charge of making things this bad shits themselves to death like that king in the Bible.
Worst banking experience I've had
Worst banking experience I've had! The site is very old looking and not user friendly. I keep getting blocked out when I log in to the site "too many times" in a row. Why can't I set up autopay by myself, when I call you don't answer!! Why do I need to call you for anything at all? I bank with a credit union that literally can do everything online or through email. I never have to call or step foot in a branch.
I received very little communication regarding my new loan, other than a letter stating you made a mistake - that's the first time I received my loan account number. This is the worse banking experience I have ever had. Time to wake up and use technology, get out of the stone age!

Went to the Needham MA branch
Went to the Needham MA branch, arrived a few minutes after 3pm. I needed to send an international wire to pay for our vacation. I figured I'll go to the teller since I also needed a bank check. The teller took over 15 minutes, then went for the wire. Only to be told that it needs to start by 3pm, now I'm asking why did the teller not say anything. Now I need to go again to the bank. Also why can't the wire data be taken and sent the next day. Definitely need to make changes to training and maybe the way things are done.

I am extremely disappointed with M&T Bank's customer service. I called because Zelle blocked a payment to my nail technician, and after waiting on hold for 40 minutes, I was connected to a representative who was unhelpful, dismissive, and unnecessarily difficult to work with.
Instead of clearly explaining the issue or helping resolve it, the representative asked a long series of irrelevant and repetitive questions. He had me check my transaction history for the name of the company I work for, even though I had already provided the company's name. He insisted I verify whether it appeared differently on a transaction, which made no sense and did nothing to address my problem.
The questioning continued with inquiries about my phone, insurance, internet connection, and several other unrelated topics. Rather than feeling like I was receiving assistance, I felt like I was being interrogated while my actual issue remained unresolved.
Between the excessive hold time, the lack of professionalism, the unclear communication, and the inability to resolve a simple Zelle payment issue, this experience was beyond frustrating. Unfortunately, this is just one of several issues I've experienced with M&T Bank, and this interaction was the final straw.
I will be closing my account and taking my business elsewhere. I expect much better customer service from a financial institution. I would not recommend M&T Bank based on my experience.
