The worst customer experience ever - how not to do it!
Had probably one of the poorest customer service experiences today in my 57 years of life. I was appalled!
I recently purchased a new to me 2022 BMWR1250RT motorcycle privately. (Ocean didn’t have any approved used in stock when I was looking to purchase).
I booked in for a service 2 days after ownership as it was due on time.
The booking date came along - 7 weeks later and I arrived 15 minutes earlier than the booking time of 12:30pm.
I checked in at Motorrad reception and answered various questions from the service advisor checking me in. The first red flag came when the service advisor stated that I had not purchased the bike from them which seemed to be an issue as she seemed afronted that they were dealing with a bike that wasn’t purchased from them. Red flag number 2 was when I was then advised that they didn’t know anything about the bike (even though 100% of its service history and maintenance is with BMW Motorrad and on the system).
I raised 3 niggles, the first 2 of which I raised when I called after making the original service booking.
1. Fuel flap wouldn’t open (and if I got it open by loosening the bolts) wouldn’t close.
2. Heated seat wire for front seat had detached.
3. Emergency SOS warning light/fault (new intermittent fault within a couple of days of booking date).
The service advisor informed me that these were all new issues and they wouldn’t be able to look at them today as they had no prior notice. It seems these two niggles I had previously called them about had not been recorded or made it onto the job sheet.
I asked if they could be at least looked at while the bike was in for service that day and I understood that a fix that day was unlikely but at least for the pre highlighted issues could be looked at. I was advised that this may or may not be possible
Depending on the technicians time. Everything seemed like it was an uphill struggle.
20 minutes in, still in my bike gear and still stood at reception I said that “this wasn’t going so well for me” as I felt the experience to that point was far from polished and fell way below what I would expect. They struggled to be reactive let alone proactive.
At this point a man appeared who sat down in the seat next to the service advisor during our question and answer session, stood up and said “what’s the problem?” I explained again and he said “I’m Bill and I’m the service manager here, there’s the door, if you don’t like it you can leave”. I was absolutely shocked and I advised Bill that his attitude was disgraceful and that “I wasn’t feeling it”. I then said it was not right to have this conversation in front of one of his team members.
Things changed a little, for the better I’m pleased to say and a more helpful approach was eventually forthcoming.
However, the whole initial experience was shocking and an embarrassment to the BMW Motorrad brand and the Ocean group, although reading many other reviews here for Ocean, it seems this is not uncommon and I’m not alone. I felt that Bill set an extremely poor example which could very usefully be used in customer service training modules on how not to do it
I have worked in the corporate world for 30 years where customer service is a key priority for the business and the experience received for me was a NEVER AGAIN moment. I would have liked to have retained the full BMW Motorrad service and maintenance history with my bike but I am not prepared to be treated like this again by Ocean BMW Mottorad and certainly not prepared to part with my money with them again. So, I will find a good quality independent professional for all work going forward on my bike, my BMW car and my partners BMW Mini. Bill informed me that he has been at the dealership for
29 years (not sure if he’s been the service manager for all of those years) but his customer service skills leave an awful lot to be desired and worryingly, this has clearly shown to have been learned behaviour by some of his team. ‘If he can get away with it then so can I approach’. It’s almost like Bill and some of his team relish in it!
The lovely lady that dealt with me upon collection/invoice/payment was very professional and a credit to the business and was exceptional in her job. The original service advisor just ignored me when I said goodbye. She didn’t even look up!
I fully understand that this is a very negative review for Ocean BMW Motorrad and the Service Manager but this behaviour has to be called out and stopped as no business can survive in the long term with this attitude and clear customer contempt. Feedback, like this, is a gift if taken in the right way.
Overall, a shocking experience, an embarrassment to the business and a customer that will never return!
BMW e90 steering wheel airbag recall
Had my e90 in for a recall on the steering wheel airbag. From the first phone call to book me in, they have been extremely professional. They let me know the recall was due before I even had the letter in the post. Got me booked in at a convenient time and had a space with good wifi where I could work while I waited. The job took the 90 minutes they said it would and they gave my car the usual health check. Also had an upgraded valet, and they did a nice job there too. Big thank you to Phil Oxenham for taking such good care of my car!
Poor communication and slow responses…
Poor communication and slow responses to WhatsApp enquiries. Communication could be significantly improved by providing more timely updates and responding to messages promptly.
I was initially contacted via WhatsApp to arrange an appointment and was advised that 23/06 was available. However, despite responding, I did not receive any confirmation or further communication regarding the booking. Due to the delay in receiving a reply, the earliest available appointment I can now secure is 03/07, despite my need for an urgent review.
This lack of timely communication has resulted in an unnecessary delay in accessing care and has been both frustrating and disappointing.
What a crap services
What a crap services, bring car for wheels alignments 8:00 in morning to sorted my car till 3pm, no one even move car to service, spend all day for nothing, worst service ever seen!! Guys if you care your car don’t booking services with BMW ocean in Plymouth
Angry
Angry, Annoyed, frustrated with the lack of customer service given by OCEAN BMW service.
The simple instruction of "do not wash my car" instruction when checking my car in for a warranty visit should be enough to instruct OCEAN BMW not to wash my car.
Unfortunately this wasn't followed I shouldn't be asked after they ignored this why I don't want my car washed, it has a ceramic coating and for this reason I do not want my car washed.
So if you want your instructions ignored take your car to OCEAN BMW.
Beware overcharging and removing of serviceable parts without cause. re do I start
Where do I start? A £4k estimate the next day was increased to £5K and a conditional cross sale was crowbarred into place by a lying arrogant member of the sales team. A new quote was provided which did not contain the new £1k part. When challenged that the price of his quote and mini head office part department differed, he doubled down and lied again. When I refused the £1k bill disappeared. None of this was documented. I asked for all parts to be returned to me and on inspecting the box, not all were included. I believe one part valued at £600 should not have been removed and 3 local garages agree with me. Appalling service, confusing invoicing and attempted fraud over the telephone. Never again will I buy MIni or BMW or go to Ocean Plymouth. Head office took 2 months to provide me with a replacement invoice..which was also confusing and was produced by Plymouth. AVOID.
Very poor service
Very poor service. Whilst I was kept waiting to book in service for ages the people in front of me were complaining about their poor service and a person in phone was making a complaint. Awful service here. Only go here as want to keep warranty going with BMW. Next car will not be a BMW. Awful dealership.
Why are the service staff so…
Why are the service staff so argumentative and arrogant, my car went in for a recall but within the year caught fire because of the same issue , no apology from Ocean or BMW.
The work was done got the car home and straight away rang them up and said the car was strutting and the mpg had dropped by 15%.
They told me to bring the car in and their top technician would walk up and see the car in the New Year.
While waiting I asked my normal local mechanic to plug the laptop in to the obd , straight away an error message came up , wires were not secured down and a bolt was missing.
When waiting at reception with a lady called Sue on complaints , I was told the technician was on his way , I said to the lady make sure he brings up a laptop to diagnose the fault ,she replied they do not use them , so I said all BMWs have an obd port?
Technician with an attitude straight away said the car sounded okay and that I might have pulled the wires out myself!
The bolt missing was not there when the car went in and they did not have one.
So told it was nothing they had done , now 3 days later the engine management light is on.
Lost the will and taking it to an independent specialist.
Left car for MOT
Left car for MOT. When we got it back the rear tryes were ruined. So bad we had to replace them. We contacted BMW who said they would look i to it and be in touch. This of course has not happened. In the past we have had work done, we get a survey to complete, but not this time. Maybe they are trying to fudge the survey by only sending it to happy customers. Beware of joy riders
Salesperson lady was disrespectful.
BMW cars have really gone downhill in their quality, cheap materials! Nothing like my old E36 M3. Another thing gone downhill these days are salespersons attitudes/behaviours! I am mentally disabled and entitled to a motability car, I'm also 47 years old and in early retirement because I'm able to attract money easily. Sadly though if you're looking for a motability car that = not very well off to a salesperson and they rudely disrespectfully cut you off while talking to them as if they are waaaay above you! Ha.. it was a Saturday and she was working. I don't even work during the week let alone a Saturday and you think your above me?! Okay. No sales for you lady.
Dodgy dealership
Saw a new bmw x3 at the plymouth showroom last week advertised at £60,800 applied through Carwow and a salesman jermaine phoned and offered a £5000 discount.
We then discussed a trade in of my current vehicle an offer was made. The weekend passed and the trade in value dropped by £2000. I had apparently misunderstood the deal quoted.
Come Wednesday I'd heard nothing and I was due to collect the next day. Sent an email enquiry got an apology. When the pcp contract arrived clearly they were hoping I wouldn't read it as it contained no discount.
Contacted the salesman he then claimed the discount had been applied to extras fitted to the vehicle. I asked why the vehicle had been advertised at a specific price when he was trying to say it was in fact £5000 extra. It was once again a breakdown in verbal discussions.
So I'm stupid twice and don't listen it's not them trying to rip me off.
The sales manager confirmed it was all my fault regardless of the fact I had a copy of quoted price. So I cancelled the purchase I don't like dishonesty.
The company has removed the link but rather stupidly have left the advert on their website I have copied my paperwork and printed the Web page and forwarded it all to the advertising standards. Ocean need to check the law if it is an obvious error they don't have to sell but this is NOT a clearly obvious error a d they are trying it on.
Consistently dreadful
I've owned 3 BMW bikes over the last 20 years, I've always found Ocean to be poor, they've had the opportunity on each occasion to sell me a bike and I've always found a price way better from other BMW dealers. I had to have my bikes serviced by them when they were in warranty and the simplest of tasks was too much such as altering a headlight beam. Mistakes also made on service dates. Some of the staff were unhelpful and to be frank arrogant. There are way better dealerships in the country if you are prepared to travel a bit.
Asked for my battery to be changed…
This revue was written by a Edward Jackson
Asked for my battery to be changed under warranty
Because projected mileage information was wrong after various journeys. Firstly told £192 an hour if investigation proved it wasn’t covered by warranty. Asked how long might this take got no answer. Got BMW head office to pay for first hour. Plymouth Couldn’t guarantee when it would be looked at
And I’d need to be in all day. Then after complaining told a”master technician “ had looked at it remotely and there was nothing wrong with the battery. Then told to bring it in when a report would be sent to BMW and I would have to wait. I asked what would change from the remote decision and why didn’t they do that in the first place. Got fed up with being led up the garden path so gave up. No guidance on how many £192 hours it would’ve taken to decide If the warranty would be honoured and even IF it was BMW who then has to approve it ! Some warranty.
I don't go here again
I don't go here again, they did way more than what is needed to pass my MOT. Replaced seatbealt holders (they were perfectly fine) and windshield wipers. I will choose another company for my next service.
Damaged paintwork when they washed the car
I brought my 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe in for a brake fluid service and MOT. Without my permission, the team washed the car—and in doing so, severely scratched every panel. It appears dirty rags or rags containing grit were used, leaving serious damage across the vehicle.
This issue remains unresolved and now requires a trip to a proper BMW dealership in London to be assessed and corrected. I would strongly advise avoiding BMW Ocean, as their care and handling of premium vehicles is clearly unacceptable.
To add, before I even saw the damage, I was asked to leave a 5-star review in exchange for a donation to charity. This feels like a clear attempt to artificially inflate positive reviews.
Ocean BMW Plymouth
Ocean BMW Plymouth – Dangerous Service and Ongoing Quality Issues
I recently had a routine brake fluid change carried out on my M4 at Ocean BMW Plymouth. Unfortunately, what should have been a straightforward service turned into a deeply concerning and potentially dangerous experience.
Shortly after collecting the vehicle, I discovered brake fluid leaking from the braking system—a critical failure that could have had catastrophic consequences for me and other road users. It is shocking and unacceptable that a car was allowed to leave an official BMW workshop in such a condition.
Even more disappointing was the dealership’s response. When I raised the issue, there was a clear lack of urgency, accountability, or genuine remorse. For a brand that claims to uphold the highest standards of safety and engineering, this fell far short of expectations.
Worryingly, this is not the first problem I’ve experienced with this branch, raising serious concerns about the consistency and quality of their workmanship.
Although they offered a 20% discount on my next service, I declined. After repeated issues with this location, my trust in their service has been completely eroded.
I’m sharing this so other customers are aware—especially when safety is involved. I would strongly caution others before using this branch.
You're sincerely
Mr McGuire
Terrible rude and disrespectful…
Terrible rude and disrespectful argumentative full of backstabbing Freemasons playing games with parts I ordered once again avoid this lot if you can
I was sold a new bmw valued at £100k
I was sold a new bmw valued at £100k. I was well know to the dealership having purchased multiple cars and bikes over many years. The car this time was available immediately. I always buy cars with the top spec but this car didn’t have active cruise , just basic cruise. The sales team didn’t even bother to tell me it didn’t have that package. They insinuated the car was loaded with everything a high value unit would normally have. On driving the unit away I discovered the car had no active cruise, something I’ve had on every car owned over 8 years. I called them and they initiated they might be able to install it if I paid an extra £2600 - I said ok. Minutes later they called and said it couldn’t be retrofitted. The sales technique was awful, it was obvious they knew I would call. They offered to buy the car back immediately but I would lose 30k! They did this to me, a very good client, they knew I expected this tach in my car; loyalty meant nothing. It was frankly like being fleeced in broad daylight. I will never use this dealership again.
I have had a few bad experiences with ...
I have had a few bad experiences with BMW Ocean Plymouth Service department.
On one occasion the service advisor was being particularly unhelpful. I later discovered that he was leaving, and being made to continue working until his notice period had elapsed. How unprofessional is it that the service manager allowed that to happen.
On another occasion the air conditioning was regassed without identifying that the condenser had a leak, which was the cause of the total loss of gas both prior to and after regassing.
On another occasion the service technician failed to identify the cause of a fault that I asked they investigate. The car was in for recall work at the same time. It appears that the technician reset the fault log after completing the recall work, and thereby erased log entries that would have assisted with investigating the fault. As a result I took the car elsewhere for the fault to be resolved.
On another occasion they failed to order a part required for the work that the car was booked in for.
Rip off service
I have a BMW 530 which was serviced by Ocean in Plymouth in late October for about £650. Now, 3000 miles and four months later, the brake fluid warning led has lit.
I phoned this company who said a brake fluid change would cost £121!
What did they do for my £650 at the recent service?
Apparently, according to this company, a service doesn't cover brake fluid!!!! This is a timed service - first 3 years and every 2 years after that.
Avoid this profiteering company!
