We would like to thank Anjali Ewing for giving us our first negative feedback after 30-years. She says to be warned – she is right, we do not tolerate unethical or illegal practices and do not wish to be complicit in such practices. As she rightly confirms in her review, we withdrew our quote because we are an ethical business of outstanding repute and acted accordingly.

We attended Ms Ewing’s flat following her post on Facebook for a quote. On our visit she said she wanted a quote for the entire 2-bedroom flat to be decorated and following our survey we noticed damage following prior water leak in the bedrooms. Ms Ewing said that she sought compensation from her housing association landlord for the damage to the two ceilings. We saw no evidence of any water damage to any walls in the bedrooms, or the walls and ceilings of other rooms.

During our visit Anjali Ewing requested our quote provides minimal information about the work required, including scope and other rooms. We said that we only provide detailed quotes to ensure mutual understanding between parties. She then went on to say that we could provide her with a detailed quote once her landlord had accepted the first. We thought this behaviour was rather odd in our 30-years experience, nonetheless, we submitted our detailed quote for entire flat decoration and in response Anjali Ewing said “...your quote is too specific. I asked you not to do that. You mention walls, ceilings, woodwork, two coats etc. can you please amend. Just say to treat the ceiling stains…”

We immediately emailed Anjali Ewing and withdrew our quote to provide painting and decorating services. We had reasonable belief that she was attempting to defraud her landlord by manipulating quotes and dishonestly misrepresenting the true cost to repaint the water damaged ceiling at the cost of repainting the entire flat. We consider it to be unethical and rather unorthodox for a customer to amend the wording of our quote with the aim of submitting it to a third party for payment in settlement of a claim.

Out of professional courtesy we sent her an email to give our reasons for withdrawing the quote but Anjali Ewing gave no plausible explanation as to why the wording of our quote must be severely limited to her words. Instead, she messaged us saying “...please do not be upset” Even after we had withdrawn our quote, she sent further messages and emails asking us to re-consider our position. Without giving us enough time to respond to her email, Anjali Ewing immediately posted this review.

She claims in her review that she “...certainly would not place her trust in this company” which rather contradicts her numerous requests by message and email for us to reconsider our decision to provide services and in one of her messages she even said that “...I feel you will do a very good job for me…” and rather suddenly she said, “...the landlord had accepted the quote..”, which we had withdrawn and that we could start next week if we want.

Despite our continued refusal to amend the quote, or to provide any services, she went on to accuse us of being racist when we had in fact provided her with a quote. She further claims in her review “...I tried getting in touch and it was difficult” when she had sent numerous messages and emails, she had no difficulty whatsoever so her claim is false.

We can only conclude that Anjali Ewing cannot see the error of her ways and how her questionable behaviour may be perceived by others. On the facts above, which can be independently verified, her review is malicious and false and sent out of bitterness and spite because we would not conspire in her attempt to defraud her landlord.

We will provide Ms Ewing’s housing association landlord with all evidence for them to take any course of action they deem necessary. Whether or not Anjali Ewing had or had attempted to commit a criminal offence, such as fraud by misrepresentation, is not a matter for us to decide but for her landlord and the authorities who will be privy to the full facts and circumstances and are able to check the veracity of her claims. As a business, we are only required to act on a reasonable belief which we did, hence withdrawing our quote. In any event, it is a service provider’s prerogative whether to provide a service as long as the reason is not in any way discriminatory under the Equality Act 2010.
