Shurgard Storage — Be Very Careful When Cancelling

I used Shurgard while moving house and, based on my experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering them to read the cancellation terms very carefully.

I gave the required 15 days’ notice and was told I would still have to pay a full additional month, despite the unit being completely emptied. I have photographic evidence showing that the unit was empty on 1 August, well before the date Shurgard said it needed to be vacated.

The situation then became even more frustrating. I was told Shurgard had apparently tried to contact me, despite me receiving no such contact. A colleague even claimed my telephone number was invalid — yet the number they read back to me was the same number recorded on my account.

The whole issue appears to have arisen because a padlock had accidentally been left on the unit door. That padlock has since been removed. The unit itself was empty.

Despite this, I was subsequently charged another full month of storage. I contacted Shurgard, explained what had happened, requested a refund and offered evidence that the unit had been empty. The response I received felt like a standard corporate brush-off rather than any genuine attempt to resolve the problem.

What makes this particularly disappointing is that Shurgard's introductory offers can make the service look extremely attractive, but my experience is that the cancellation process can leave you facing substantial additional charges even when you have already emptied the unit.

I have personally used storage before, and members of my family have also been previous customers. This experience has left a very different impression. My experience with the previous Lok'nStore service was far more straightforward.

If you're considering Shurgard, my advice is simple: read the cancellation terms extremely carefully, keep photographic evidence of the condition and date your unit is emptied, and don't assume that an empty unit means your charges have stopped.

For me, the issue isn't simply the money. It's the feeling that once they've taken the payment, getting someone to properly investigate the circumstances or take responsibility becomes incredibly difficult to previous customers.

I certainly won't be using Shurgard again. Use elsewhere.

Gina was very helpful and advised all of our options. She clearly explained the different costings, T&C’s, opening times, etc. She explained and showed us the app and the security on site. This was all done efficiently and she was able to guide us into the right storage unit and shared the benefit of her knowledge in regards to sizing. Thanks very much

Top service, quick and easy

The company stored my stuff, as I would expect them to do. Nothing more, nothing less. The only irritating thing about the whole experience, as with everywhere now, was their blatant attempt to lull me into a 5-star review!
