I tested Taipan Transit using a GRE tunnel on an Ubuntu machine in my home network.
An initial test showed approximately 518 Mbps download but only 1.5 Mbps upload. In subsequent comparisons against the same server, my direct connection achieved around 96 Mbps upload, while performance through GRE remained much lower.
I also measured 30–35% UDP packet loss, even at low traffic rates and with small packets. Checks of the local configuration and temporary adjustments did not resolve the issue.
For my needs, these results do not yet provide the reliability I’m looking for. However, the root cause has not been identified, so I cannot confidently attribute the fault to Taipan’s infrastructure. The local router, network path and provider side still need to be distinguished.
I have collected test results and packet captures to submit to support. This is a provisional assessment of GRE in my particular setup, and I’m open to updating the review following further investigation and a resolution.
