Great Little Steam Train Trip
Had a lovely day on the Talyllyn Steam Railway. The whole experience was great - all the staff were so friendly & welcoming and the engines themselves were fantastic.
Got the train up to Dolgoch Falls (station) and then had a great walk up to see the falls themselves - which are beautiful (an hour & half was just enough time before catching the train).
Took the next train up to the top of the line at Abergynolwyn & finally Nant Gwernol, then all the way down to Tywyn.
Highly recommend this trip for people who like steam trains & lovely scenery/views.
Talyllyn Railway : Behind the scenes experience
This railway, is a fantastic place to visit! I went there last week for the behind the scenes experience. Getting to explore behind the scenes of the railway , history, locomotive shed , museum etc. Our guide Frank did a wonderful job , he was very kind , informative and made the experience more fun! Give him a medal! the other staff members were very friendly and welcoming. I loved it so much that the whole visit flew in too quick for me LOL.
Anyway , I'd recommend visiting this railway, for there is more to it than meets the eye and you can understand why it is known as "the railway with a heart of gold". Thank you
Superb days out
We have been to the talyllyn railway a few times now. All the staff and volunteers are so friendly our little lad loves the steam engines. The views are great from the line. The shop is well stocked and the cafes at Wharf and Abergonolwyn excellent.
my son loved it, i found it tedious and boring
My son has been looking forward to coming to this railway for years and we finally got here on Thursday 23/5th, it did not start well, i had helped my disabled partner to the toilet which is a way off the platform and while waiting decided to have a cigarette, at this point some nobody decided to shout across at me like a headmaster to a naughty schoolboy (i am 69yrs old) that there is no smoking on the station, rather ironically at this point the Tallylyn loco was pulling into the station belching smoke and steam everywhere so having moved closer to the anti smoking police i made various barbed comments about the loco smoking and asked should we call the fire brigade to put it out, had we not paid already at this point i would have said stuff it and left.
however as we had an hour wait we went to the station cafe and had breakfast which was excellent and served to put me in a better frame of mind, we went around the museum and the people running it were very knowledgeable and helpful, and it cascaded downhill from there with a train journey that was slow when it was moving which was not very often as it kept stopping for no apparent reason i found the journey dull and uninteresting and by the end of the journey could not wait to jump in my car and leave.
My son however loved it and even got to see some filming of a show he watches online called cadi Dragons (English translation) as my son liked the visit that is the only reason i did not give it one star.
i also thought it to be very expensive and found the ffestiniog railway to be more interesting and better value, should my son want to return i would buy him a one way ticket and drive to the end of the line to meet him.
50 pounds for two adults
Well all I can say is we spent half an hour at a station with nothing to do but watch Brian and his other train buddy's stuff there face with chocolate cake and sandwiches for half an hour.
As paying customers I do not appreciate waiting for staff to have there lunch.
Also this train experience is not what it's cracked up to be.
The fabulous Slate Trail
What an amazing day on Thursday (21/09/23) riding The Slate Trail in the company of my dear friend & our carriage companions (the Lamberts). All the staff were authentically dressed & what struck me most throughout the entire 5 hour experience as they hopped in and out of carriages to share their knowledge was their pride in & care about their railway & its history. There were stops to be let out , with the beautifully kept steam locomotive & its 1860 original carriages backed up so that riders could video and photograph its approach. Being in a small carriage in a railway cutting meant that the kind of big views youâd maybe get on a good day on the Snowdonia railway weâre missing but there were some pretty waterfalls with the purest water you could imagine. We were given a tour of the engine sheds (working) & access to the museum
after which we were served a cream tea which I was so so looking forward to however, and here is where it went south. Nowhere had it been mentioned that the scones were to be fruit and that plain were not an option. I was gutted! What a magic day. Iâd highly recommend the day if you are in mid/north wales and in particular we enjoyed the pleasant company of tour guide Mrs Kez Jones.
Great day but....
All was fantastic till we reached the other end, a really old lady and a sergeant major spoke harshly and treated us like cattle loading us onto carriage after only 15 mins break! That we found very not professional but the rest of the staff where lovely.

Started the day with breakfast in theâŠ
Started the day with breakfast in the station cafe before travelling on the 10:30am train. Great scenery throughout the whole journey. Back for lunch in the cafe before catching the 2:05pm train. Was able to see scenes which I had missed on the first journey. Very relaxing. Staff on train and in cafe so friendly and helpful. Great start to my holiday. Covid regulations followed by railway.
A day trip to the Talyllyn on 2nd of June 2021
We found the Talyllyn and the teams on duty as welcoming and engaging as ever. Covid measures were evidently in place and adhered to. The carriages and locos were spotless and the journey up the line showed that lots of work had been put into maintaining the hedgerows and banks. We ate in the Kings Cafe and thoroughly enjoyed our family day out, topped by chatting to Stuart Williams and his team.

Great experience, very friendly and knowledgeable staff, still a good day out even with all the covid restrictions in place.

Delighted Yorkshire visitors!
Talking to Lorraine, I was booking a party of nine working volunteers from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway for the whole line trip on 27th June. We've yet to travel but the booking experience couldn't have been better. Just hope we might get a shed tour as well that she has requested on our behalf.
