I would not recommend renting a car from Tangerine Car Rental in Madeira.
When we picked up the car, it already had many scratches and quite large marks on it. We made sure to take photos of the car before leaving, because the condition was clearly not good.
After returning the car, they tried to charge us for old scratches that were already there before we rented it. It seems like this might be a common practice. Even though we had photos, they still tried to make us pay.
There was no supervisor available to talk to and no real way to resolve the situation. They simply take money from customers without proper discussion.
Very poor customer service and extremely unprofessional. Be careful if you consider renting from this company.

We rented a VW Taigo from Tangerine Rent A Car in Faro, and on the third day, the car suffered engine failure on the highway. A lost day of vacation due to a rental car's malfunction is frustrating enough, but it gets worse... Tangerine sent us a bill for â¬1,032.17. They claim that we filled the car with the wrong fuel. But we demonstrably did NOT refuel the car during our rental period before the engine failure. Tangerine is sticking to its falseness and is no longer responding to our emails.
This is an obvious fraud, an absolutely brazen rip-off!
Furthermore, Tangerine forced us to rent the Etoll device for â¬24.60, even though there are no longer any tolls in the Algarve. Other rental companies do not charge this fee.
Therefore, we warn you against Tangerine's fraud!

âThe Fleet: Unsafe and Poorly Maintained
âWe were given a Seat Ibiza (despite ordering an Opel) that was mechanically falling apart.
âThe suspension was shot: We felt every single bump on the road.
âSafety hazard: The windshield wipers were so worn we could barely see during the rain.
âMaintenance failure: After one day, the car ran out of oil. As a professional driver, I knew we had to stop immediately to save the engine. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere with no reception, forced to pay for oil out of pocket just to keep the car running.
âThe Service: A Culture of "No"
âFrom start to finish, every single request was met with a cold "No."
âThey refused to be flexible with dates despite our emergency situation.
âThey refused to swap the subpar car unless we paid an extra â¬100/day.
âThey even refused to refund the â¬18 for the oil we bought to save their engine.
âThe Final Straw
âWe returned the car on time, with a full tank and full oil, only to be hit with a â¬154 relocation fee in Lisbon. Because we were understandably upset by the series of failures, they refused to even open a new rental for us.
âWe left the agency devastatedâme and my pregnant wife, stranded. We walked to another agency nearby where we were treated like humans, met with "yes," and given a direct contact for help.
âTangerine doesn't care about your safety or your circumstances. Donât go near them unless you want a mechanical nightmare and a total lack of compassion.

Terrible company & especially worker by the name simao (Simon). Very rude & disrespectful. Refused my credit card upon arrival and proceeded to offer alternatives with extra charges of 700⬠or 4200â¬. Refused to cancel or offer any refund on our booking as we didnât accept his terms.
Seemed like he was enjoying being unhelpful & rude. Returned to airport to find solution for another rental car and mentioned our experience. 3 people at the airport rental desk were not surprised and have had many similar issues.
I never leave any review this is my first ever trust pilot review but itâs needed.
Again shocking service and simao especially a very rude person.
I have seen other reviews being charged 1-2-3k£⬠after returning cars so maybe we got away with only loosing the booking fee.

We we picked up the car at Tangerine Funcal, their card payment machine refused my card and did not allow me to pay the deposit (astronomical 2650â¬!) and as a result I had to pay the insurance (300â¬, so 3 times the price of the rent, which they lure you in with: 100â¬). My bank told me nothing was wrong with my card so for me this is a scam. Then the car we got had break issues, and trust me, you need breaks in Madeira. We had to take it back to the office urgently. Even if security was involved they asked us to fill the tank before changing the car. So this company will play with your safety for 20⬠of fuel!!! Also the queue for the shuttle at the airport was long and instead of waiting for an additional rotation (30 minutes), we preferred to pay for a taxi to reach the office.
$4.3K in an bogus charge!!
I reviewed it the past about our horrible experience. After trying to get an update on an unauthorized charge on my card for $4.3k, I was finally told that I had destroyed the clutch on the car. This was a blatant lie. The car ran perfectly and I have driven manual cars for over 10 years and never damaged a clutch. 6 weeks after I returned the car, I received a bogus invoice. Requests for further documents from them went completely ignored. Thankfully, I was able to dispute this charge with Chase's compliance department and 3 months later, I was able to resolve this bogus charge. I have been renting cars for over 25 years and have never experienced anything remote to this. This was an extremely stressful situation and caused so much trouble. This company has absolutely zero ethics and should be shut down. Do not rent with them!
Be Aware of a few Cons

Tangerine requires a â¬1,900 security deposit plus an additional â¬150 toll deposit, which is significantly higher than what major rental companies like Europcar, Avis, or Hertz typically require.
You must carry your passport with you. Unlike in the U.S., a driverâs license alone is not accepted as valid ID. This requirement is mentioned only in fine print on the voucher, and they expect you to be aware of it.
I havenât returned the car yet, so I canât comment on any additional or potential hidden fees at this time.
RIP OFF RENTAL
Cheap car rental company who rip you off with extras you don't need, like Toll device when they know you're driving locally and don't need. Complain to company and they ignore citing "T&C's"...Depot is so remote and doesn't open to 8am, which is a major negative if you have an early flight time!!
IMO AVOID THIS COMPANY.

Opgepast; de ophaal-/wegbreng locatie is 15 mins rijden van Faro airport. Je moet erheen met een busje. Eenmaal daar in een dorp ergens in niemandsland - kan je nergens anders heen - opgelicht met een extra onnodige verzkering van 400 euro omdat we de auto anders niet mee kregen. De borg voor de auto is excessief hoog, meer dan 3000 euro. Dat hebben meeste mensen niet eens als ruimte op hun creditcard. Ondanks twee rijders, geen mogelijkheid om andere creditcard te gebruiken. Verplichte afname e-toll kastje die je in de Algarve helemaal niet nodig hebt, want zijn geen tolwegen meer. Borg voor benzine retour op creditcard duurt weken, klantenservice per telefoon en email onbereikbaar en nooit respons. Kijk uit waar je voor tekent (bij ophalen en wegbrangen want ze laten je niks zien/lezen en spreken gebrekkig engels; kwestie van blind tekenen bij het kruisje. Uiterst onbetrouwbaar! Huur hier geen auto; lijkt goedkoop, maar is duurkoop!!

I am writing this review after three weeks of deeply frustrating and ultimately fruitless attempts to resolve a simple administrative request.
I had an accident and needed a copy of the police report for my insurance company.
The Claims Department is completely inaccessibleâthey are unresponsive to email and provide no working phone number. This forces customers to rely solely on the general Customer Service line as a crucial intermediary, a role they are clearly incapable of filling.
The representatives I spoke with repeatedly failed to provide meaningful help. The staff were defensive, dismissive, and instead of taking ownership, they merely suggested I "wait," providing no ETA or explaining any form of internal escalation process. For a three-week-old, straightforward request, this level of inaction is unprofessional.
The failure at the leadership level is the most concerning. A Supervisor Pedro initially promised me directly that he would resolve the issue and ensure the document was sent. He broke this promise and provided zero follow-up. On a subsequent call, when I asked to speak with him again, the representative tried to brush me off by claiming he was "busy." Only after I stated that I had previously spoken to him was I given a vague, second-hand message that the issue was "in progress." This clear pattern of broken promises and deliberate evasion demonstrates a serious lapse in accountability and service integrity.
If you have an issue that requires cross-departmental communication (specifically involving the Claims Department), expect zero resolution. The internal communication and follow-through are non-existent, and management is either unwilling or unable to provide effective support. I would strongly advise the company to immediately review its internal process for handling simple claim-related document requests and retrain its staff on basic accountability.
Smooth procedures at Tangerine Faro
We rented a car from Tangerine through Expedia. We collected the car on 28-10-2025. Tangerine provided a shuttle service from Faro airport to their rental facility. At the rental service we were met by Beatrice. She inspected the car with us and found even the tiniest scratch. The complete handover went very smoothly and soon we were on our way.
When we returned the car we were met by Fabio. He also checked the car while we transferred our luggage to the shuttle. After an inspection he released the reservation on our credit card, he provided us with an overview of the outstanding toll and within twenty minutes after arrival we were on our way to the airport. This was our best rental-experience yet. Thanks to Beatrice and Fabio.

9 day rental, easy check-in, fast check out, very pleasant representatives. The car was nice, service was nice, and the price VERY fair. One can not ask much more from a car rental agency.

Over all experience good, but be aware of up-sell on insurance. Pick up from Porto airport was swift and efficient, with around a 5 minute drive to their facility. Had to wait around 30 minutes to be seen as they were very busy. I was attended by a very helpful and bright operative who explained their 'extra charges' policy. You need to provide a prepayment for tolls of 150 euro, this is non-negotiable. Then the insurance up-sell, which was 5 times to original rental price quoted. I oped to take it as I did not want to have a 2900 Euro hold on the credit card and was unsure if they would actually accept this with the slight difference in initial placement between the rental booking and the card. The car itself was excellent, well maintained, full of petrol at pick up and no issues all all while driving. Rental return process was seem-less and the ride back to the airport had no issues. All in all, a good experience apart from the insurance up-sell.

I had the worst rental experience with Tangerine in Portugal. Upon returning the car, I was charged â¬1050 for a minor defect that I hadn't noticed and, more importantly, wasn't responsible for.
Absolutely avoid them, and if you do, carefully inspect the vehicle and demand a written record of all issues. This company has absolutely no morals or ethics.

Op 6 oktober auto gehuurd in Porto, op 13 oktober weer schadevrij ingeleverd in Lissabon. Voor eventuele schade werd bij huur een reservering gedaan op mijn creditcard rekening van ⬠2.900! Nu op 30 oktober is deze reservering nog steeds niet vrijgegeven. Ondank maning daartoe via e-mail. Waardeloze service. Niet huren bij dit foute bedrijf!!

Tangerine rent is the worst rent a car company in Portugal. I personally had horrific experience with them last week. We rented a car in Lisbon on October 13th. They did not point out a tiny chip on the windshield that I noticed a few kilometers into driving. At the drop off in Porto on October 16th they claimed that the tiny indentation on the windshield was our fault and charged over 1000 euros as if they were going to replace the windshield. Potentially a big scam is going on at the company. I will never ever rent a car from Tangerine in my life. Stay away from it. Do not give them a chance. Go and hire from proven global car rental companies. Tangerine is horrible.
