Tscaps is a free video editor for short-form content, focused on subtitles. Drop a video, get automatic transcription in seconds, style the captions the way you want, and export the file with the subtitles added to the video. Tscaps ships with a growing library of caption templates for the styles creators use on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and long-form YouTube. Word-by-word highlights, animated reveals, karaoke effects, film-style captions. Every template is CSS you can tweak. The editor is also growing into a full short-form video toolkit. You can trim cuts, split segments, and preview playback in real time. Subtitles stay at the center, but the tools around them keep expanding. Tscaps comes in two modes. The cloud mode uses a stronger transcription model and adds AI-assisted styling and features, like auto-emojis. Free exports carry a watermark; a paid Pro tier removes it, lifts the quota, and syncs your projects across devices. The local mode runs everything on your device with no sign-up and no watermark. It never uploads your video or your audio anywhere, but transcription accuracy and speed depend on your hardware. It is an open-core project (github.com/francozanardi/tscaps).

Very customizable and easy-to-use tool

I've used tscaps for a couple of personal creative videos and I've found it really useful and intuitive. The interface is simple and straightforward, which I really like, and the captions are generated pretty quickly.

There are also lots of different styling options, which gives you a lot of freedom to customize the captions. I haven't tried all the other video editing features yet, but overall I've had a good experience with it.
