Support is top - streamlined accounting

Support is top. Very responsive and they listen to feature requests. I really like how simple and streamlined the software is. I am running my own business and it is the best software I have used to streamline my book keeping. Highly recommend.

Not Recommended for Non-Profit Organizations

While Tabby shows promise for freelancers and simple for-profit businesses, it is not suitable for non-profit organizations. The founder confirmed it lacks essential non-profit accounting features and compliance capabilities. If you're running a non-profit, look elsewhere.

What We Tested
I signed up for a free account specifically to evaluate Tabby as a QuickBooks Online replacement for a non-profit organization. After thorough testing and direct Q&A with the founder, here's what I found:

❌ Critical Issues for Non-Profits
1. No Non-Profit Accounting Standards Support
The founder explicitly confirmed Tabby is "primarily designed for for-profit businesses and freelancers, not specifically for non-profit accounting standards like FASB ASC 958."

What's Missing:
🚫 No Statement of Activities (non-profit equivalent of P&L)
🚫 No Statement of Financial Position with net asset classifications
🚫 No support for restricted/unrestricted/temporarily restricted net assets
🚫 No fund accounting for grant tracking
🚫 No functional expense classification (Program/Administrative/Fundraising) required for IRS Form 990
🚫 No built-in Form 990 reporting capabilities

2. Chart of Accounts Structure Problems
Tabby's CoA lacks standard accounting hierarchy that auditors, boards, and accountants expect:

The Problem:
⚠️ All accounts start with 5xxx (standard accounting uses 100s=Assets, 200s=Liabilities, 300s=Equity, 400s=Revenue, 500s=Expenses)
⚠️ Numbers overlap without logical grouping
⚠️ No visual account type recognition
⚠️ Makes financial reporting confusing and migration from existing systems nearly impossible

The Response:
The founder acknowledged they're "preparing a standard numbering system according to hierarchy numbering" but provided no timeline beyond "we are focusing on" it. The QuickBooks import tool (coming in 2-3 weeks) may preserve existing numbering, but they couldn't confirm.

3. "But Some Non-Profits Use It..."
The founder mentioned "some non-profits use Tabby for basic bookkeeping" - but this is concerning, not reassuring. Basic bookkeeping ≠ compliant non-profit accounting. Without proper CoA structure, fund accounting, and Form 990 support, these organizations may face serious compliance issues during audits or IRS reviews.

⚠️ Who This Might Work For
✅ Freelancers with simple income/expense tracking
✅ Very small for-profit businesses with basic accounting needs
✅ Solopreneurs who don't need complex financial reporting

🚫 Who Should Avoid This
❌ Any non-profit organization (confirmed by founder)
❌ Businesses requiring standard CoA hierarchy
❌ Organizations needing auditor-ready financial statements
❌ Anyone migrating from QuickBooks/Xero with custom CoA structures
❌ Businesses with compliance reporting requirements

Positive Notes
To be fair:
👍 The founder was responsive and transparent about limitations
👍 They're working on QuickBooks/Wave migration tools (2-3 weeks out)
👍 They acknowledged the CoA numbering issue and claim to be addressing it
👍 For very simple use cases, the interface may work

Final Verdict
For non-profits: Hard pass. The founder's responses make it crystal clear this tool is not designed for non-profit accounting and lacks the fundamental features required for compliance. Don't risk your organization's financial compliance and audit readiness on a platform that explicitly states it doesn't support non-profit standards.

For for-profit businesses: Wait until they fix the Chart of Accounts structure and deliver the promised migration tools. The current CoA implementation is non-standard and problematic even for for-profit accounting.

Recommendation
Non-profits should stick with QuickBooks Online, Xero, or dedicated non-profit accounting platforms like Aplos, QuickBooks Non-Profit Edition, or Fund E-Z. The cost difference isn't worth the compliance risk and lack of proper financial reporting.

If you're also evaluating Tabby for non-profit use, I'd strongly encourage you to ask the founder these same questions before purchasing.
