Having only one functioning eye, the decision to undergo cataract surgery was not one I took lightly. The stakes could not have been higher, this was not simply about improving vision, it was about protecting the only sight I have.

After extensive research I chose Mr Maurino specifically because of his outstanding reputation and the remarkable respect he commands among his peers in the ophthalmological community. That reputation proved to be entirely deserved.

From the very first consultation Mr Maurino's expertise was immediately apparent. He took the time to understand my unique situation as a monocular patient, explained every aspect of the procedure with clarity and patience, and never once made me feel that my anxiety was anything other than completely understandable. His calm, measured confidence was genuinely reassuring at a time when I needed it most.

On the day of the surgery, the journey from Cumbria to London took over three hours, and every mile of it was filled with fear and trepidation. I barely noticed the world passing by the window. I could not have imagined then what the return journey would feel like.

The procedure itself was carried out with extraordinary precision. My post-operative unaided vision measured -0.10 logMAR, better than the 20/20 standard considered normal. To achieve above-normal vision from a single eye after cataract surgery is an outcome I could only have dreamed of.

That same evening, on the train home to Cumbria, I sat looking out of the window at the trees and greenery I had longed to see with clarity and found myself reading even the smallest signs at every station we passed through. It has truly changed my life.

What sets Mr Maurino apart is not just his surgical skill, which is exceptional, but his humanity. He understands that behind every case is a person with fears, hopes and a life that depends on the outcome. For a monocular patient placing their entire visual world in a surgeon's hands, that combination of technical mastery and genuine care is everything.

I also want to make special mention of Mr Maurino's wider team, headed up by Andrew and Florence. In a journey that can feel daunting and overwhelming, having an admin team that is organised, responsive, warm and genuinely caring makes an enormous difference. Andrew and Florence ensured that every appointment, every query and every concern was handled with professionalism and kindness. They are the backbone of a seamlessly run service and deserve every bit as much recognition as the clinical team they support so brilliantly.

I cannot recommend Mr Maurino and his entire team at Moorfields highly enough. If you are facing cataract surgery, particularly if your circumstances make the stakes especially high, you could not be in better hands. This was not just surgery, it was life changing.

I consulted Mr Maurino in April about the removal of my cataracts.

Mr Maurino and all staff at the hospital were extremely professional, courteous and helpful. Mr Maurino explained clearly what form the procedure would take and the potential risks. This was followed up with informative written explanations and instructions.

I had both cataracts removed at the same time with no adverse results.

The post-operative instructions were also excellent. I was seen punctually for my 3 appointments.

Most importantly, the cataract operation was a complete success, indeed the outcome is better than had been predicted so one very satisfied patient.

I am amazed and very grateful to the wonderful Vincenzo Maurino and his team at Moorfields West End for the incredible skill and care with which he performed cataract removal with toric lens replacement on my right eye on April 2nd 2026. Looking across the Thames at Greenwich towards the City I can see every amazing detail. It’s really quite incredible. After 66 years of severe myopia and astigmatism deteriorating further to -15 and -12.50 plus cataracts, I arrived at Mr Maurino’s clinic with little vision and feeling confused. I had already seen three other ophthalmologists who had all suggested different lense replacements, none of which sat comfortably within the reading and research I had undertaken as a journalist/writer. I knew choosing the right lense replacement and the right surgeon was my one chance of achieving clear vision for the first time in my life. Mr Maurino is personable and charming with no trace of arrogance. He listened, thought and decided on J&J Eyhance Monofocal Plus Toric with a monovision plan which made immediate sense to me given the status of my eyes. He also kindly and patiently answered further questions I sent over and was happy to discuss the strength of the reading IOL. With the right eye set for distance first and a week later the left eye for reading, five weeks on I have perfect vision. I can see distance 20/20 in my right eye and easily read both at arm’s length and close up with my left eye. I haven’t once felt the need to reach for additional glasses which is life changing. His whole team is kind and gentle and the operations themselves are nothing to worry about. Throughout I felt my eyes were in perfectly safe hands. Having only been able to see clearly at three inches in front of my eyes, I now wake up every morning and marvel at the clarity and colours of my new world. Thank you Mr Vincenzo Maurino. At my first appointment I received a very thorough examination - followed by a consultation with Mr Maurino who gave me a clear explanation of my choices- I went on to have a lens implant operation which was honestly painless and has given me a quite amazing result of glasses free vision

I underwent successful cataract surgery by Mr. Maurino on both eyes within the space of two months. I suffer from Marfan’s syndrome. His detailed pre-operative analysis and valuable advice on choice of lens power, as well as the positive outcome of the surgery confirmed his competence. With Mr. Maurino, one experiences what « being in safe hands », is all about. It was a seamless patient journey from start to finish.

Mr Maurino carried out cataract surgery in both my eyes - one immediately after the other, at my request - and the whole experience was five-star. The results of the surgery are great, having restored 20/20 vision in both eyes. I was comfortable throughout the surgery and had no problems afterwards. I’d recommend Mr Maurino to anyone considering surgery of this kind.

I was very unsure about going ahead with Cateract lens replacement surgery being aware of the possible complications of the procedure.I have high myopia and mild retinal abnormalities and was therefore more at risk of complications. I initially considered surgery back in February 2024 but kept putting it off having initially been told by a different specialist that I should only have monofocal full correction of my short sight in both eyes but would then lose my near vision.
Mr Maurino was reassuring throughout all the interactions I had with him and particularly during the two surgical operations. He even dealt calmly with my questions in the operating theatre with respect to the power of the lens to be inserted. I now understand this has nothing to do with glasses prescription but is worked out taking into account many different factors which are carefully measured including length of eyeball and detailed visual assessments at an initial appointment. I had surgery in each eye separately one week apart- I was aware that both eyes could have been operated on the same day but preferred to know that there were no initial complications before proceeding to the second eye. I had Toric monofocal lenses inserted in both eyes and can now function without glasses for the first time in 55years! Drops are required post surgery for 4 weeks but the regime for this is clearly explained . My right eye can see distance clearly and my left can read small print. I can see colour so much more vividly then pre-surgery and am also able to drive at night with glare massively reduced. (Multifocal lenses were not a possibilty for me). My brain is still adapting to this new situation but I am hopeful that if I persevere I can continue glasses free. Simple things eg swimming/showering/seeing my grandchildren's faces/details and colour outside have been transformed and I now realise how much my vision had gradually deteriorated particularly over the past 3years despite ever increasing prescriptions in my glasses lenses. (Myopic shift)

I had read some excellent reviews of Mr Maurino with regard to cataract surgery prior to making an appointment for a consultation. This was worthwhile research, I benefited greatly from Mr. Maurino's experience when it came to my choice of IOL. I had extensive eye examinations before and after surgery, and Mr. Maurino's team are first class. Two months after surgery I am absolutely delighted with the results.

I had bilateral cataract surgery 27 September with EDOF implants. I was an extremely nervous patient, and, due to my fear of the surgery, had put off having a consultation for over a year. In the event, I needn’t have worried at all. My initial meeting with Mr Maurino went some way to allaying my fears - he was thoroughly professional, knowledgeable and approachable. He explained everything carefully, including associated risks, and helped me to make decisions about the most suitable lenses to implant, and whether to have my eyes operated on separately or together.
On the day of my surgery he was very reassuring, and I relaxed, knowing that I was in the hands of an expert. The anaesthetising drops and mild sedative, combined with Mr Maurino’s superb skill, meant that not only did I feel no pain, but I also couldn’t feel anything that was happening (my biggest worry!). He told me at the outset to ‘relax and look at the light show’, which was what I did. The operations on both eyes were over in about 35 minutes. I left the hospital with blurry vision, and within a few hours I could see really well.
The results of my operation have been wonderful. I now have 20/20 vision and can see all but the tiniest print without reading glasses. It is now 4 weeks since my operation, and I am still marvelling at my new sight!
I cannot thank Mr Maurino and his wonderful team enough for transforming the quality of my life. My whole experience, from the initial consultation through to the post-operation appointment, was nothing short of perfect. I am recommending him to all my friends ‘of a certain age’. Like many others, I suspect, I wish I had had it done sooner.
