Thank you for stopping by our Union, NJ location for an appraisal on your Toyota FJ Cruiser. We are sorry we could not meet your expectations on price. I see from our notes that you were asking for more than the price online when you came to the branch, so we were starting from a difficult position. Before making an offer, we complete a physical and mechanical appraisal of the vehicle, run the vehicle's history, and scan the diagnostic computer for any problems.

Unfortunately, the Toyota had been involved in three accidents reported by New Jersey Police. The first was on 9/21/2018. On 8/4/2021, it was involved in a left rear impact with another vehicle in Newark, NJ. Most recently, the Toyota was in a collision with another vehicle in Union City, NJ. As a professional dealer, we have an obligation to report vehicle history when selling to the next owner. This information is in the public domain on CARFAX and any buyer will know the vehicle has been in multiple accidents.

Accident history hurts the resale value of the vehicle. This is well-known as diminished value and is well-documented online. When you are involved in an accident, you should ask your insurance company to compensate you for the future diminished value when you sell the vehicle.

Another detriment to the resale value of the Toyota was that it had a stick shift instead of an automatic box. This narrows the resale audience as most Americans cannot drive stick.

During the physical appraisal, we noted damage not disclosed online including a cracked windshield and significant rusting on the right-hand rail underneath the car. This is considered structural damage under the NAAA Vehicle Condition Grading Scale which is the standard for grading used vehicles. Significant rust on structural components weakens the vehicle's performance in an accident and must be disclosed.

On running OBDII diagnostics, the vehicle reported fault codes including P1604 which is a "Startability Malfunction" and covers an array of problems that need to be diagnosed by a dealer. There was also a C1242 fault code that relates to the IG2 power source circuit and a U0100 code which indicates lost communication with the ECM/PCM "A".

Finally, the vehicle had many modifications including aftermarket wheels and off-roading modifications such as the alterations to the suspension. These modifications may be desirable to an enthusiast, but our buyers expect the vehicle to be in its original OEM state and won't pay more for customizations.

After working with our technical team, we made an offer, taking all these factors into account, which matched what you were estimated online for a clean example of the vehicle. We respect that you had expectations above our online estimate and understand your frustration that we were unable to rise above our online estimate. We are still interested in buying the truck if you are unable to sell it privately.

Ultimately, you should have had a five-star customer service experience even if you chose not to sell.
