Blue Pearl Nearly Cost Our Puppy His Life: Misdiagnosis, Misinformation, and a Euthanasia Recommendation That Was Dead Wrong
This is a case where 1 star is generous. We nearly lost our puppy due to misdiagnosis and poor recommendations: Our 11-week-old puppy started vomiting Monday morning, and I suspected a blockage. We brought him to Blue Pearl Skokie Monday afternoon after he couldnât keep anything down. Despite my concerns about a blockage, they tested for parvo and told me he was positive - this was surprising given we are experienced dog owners, understand the risks for puppies, and have not left our house with him; as well, he had received his first vaccine round, and showed no parvo symptoms (everyone commented on how he was not presenting as a puppy with parvo). Skokie said their Northfield location had a cutting edge treatment for parvo, so we were transferred to Blue Pearl Northfield. As I continued insisting on the blockage possibility, Northfield did an ultrasound and confirmed it Tuesday morning (Skokie apparently doesnât have ultrasound capabilities). Hereâs where it gets truly concerning: The Northfield vet suggested we consider euthanizing our 11-week-old puppy due to treatment costs and a âpoor/guarded prognosis.â They also informed me that they could not treat him as they do not have the facilities to do surgery on an animal with an infectious disease â so the assurance I had received on Monday â that Blue Pearl could care for him and had the same capabilities as Veterinary Specialty Center was a lie. I refused to consider euthanasia and immediately took him to Veterinary Specialty Center. VSC performed surgery Tuesday night, removed the blockage successfully, and he was doing so well they sent him home Wednesday afternoon. The puppy Blue Pearl recommended euthanizing is now back to his crazy, happy puppy self. Bottom line: A puppy that was allegedly a euthanasia candidate made a full recovery within 24 hours at a different facility. Trust your instincts and donât hesitate to seek a second opinion. The lesson we learned is that Blue Pearl prioritizes profits over care. Had they done the right thing, they would have told me that the best place for him was Veterinary Specialty Center, which would have saved us and our puppy time, pain, stress, and money.
Abusing my cat
It was terribke, they charged me 700$ for a urinary tract infection, then wanted to charge me 900$ more for the meds, i was there for 14 hours, ,& then they just sent me home with nothing to cure the UTI, i paid 700$ for nothibg, Im a very easy going person, but they were smirkibg &wouldnt give me my cat ehen i asked for her after 14 hours, had to threaten to call police, they were terrible, dod nothibg but waste my time,& stress my cat out more, she was soo hogh when i got her back, she eas terrified, i eant my 700$ back that they stoke for abusing my cat!

this is for the golden valley, MN location
it was a disaster from the very start. this location like to bait and hook you. I brought my dog in for kidney disease, he needed fluids to flush out his system. I was initially told it would be about 2-3K for this service. to me that was well worth to at least give my dog a fighting chance. so then I get the IV started dog admitted and all the prep work to get his procedure started. then I get an estimate for 4-6K, um well I was told 2-3 and you already have my dog admitted and ready to go which is already a $1000 charge for services I didn't even get a quote for. so I have no choice now but to continue. so a full day goes by and I get a call that he has improved but not enough to be safe to stop theory. and I'm told id get a call with an estimate on continued service. and I was also told my current total was $3800. well no one called me with the estimate and the next morning I get the update that he again improved but still not quite enough - well I get my current charges and its just over 6K!!! now I get another estimate to continue his theory which is 2500 to 4K. what am I supposed to do at this point? if I stop now that 6k already spent goes in the toilet and I lose my dog. so I either pay another 3 grand or euthanize him. obviously I am going to pay to keep him on fluids especially since he has been gradually improving. so next morning I get an update and I'm told he couldn't handle the fluid volume so they had to stop which in turn didn't allow his values to go down. so sadly I had to take him home and hopefully get him to eat and build his strength up.
he didn't recover he died the next day. I spent 8k to keep him miserable for 4 full days instead of being told that euthanasia would be the best course of action in his condition.
the doctors at blue pearl did not look into my dogs history and collect the test results of his bloodwork to determine best course of action prior to admittance.
I will not step foot at this location or st Louis park Banfield again and I don't recommend anyone else either.
I felt gaslighted taken advantage of my pet was worse not better after I leftâŠ
I felt gaslighted the $ they charged was outrageous and nothing was done to help my pet he got some pain meds anti nausea X-rays I paid $2k the front desk staff is distant robotic condescending and rude most of all the wait was 6hrs long .. plz beware donât take ur pet there they are all sales reps from the Dr down profit profit profit .. horrible horrible experience my pet is worse not better and the Dr started recommending even more procedures to total up to 10k .. I mean it was just awful I came at 3pm left at 9pm am exhausted am worn out I feel completely taken advantage of
Could not live without them
Weâve taken 3 different pets there multiple times. This place is an indispensable part of our lives as owners of active, extraordinarily loved pets. The doctors are very talented and they have access to many diagnostic resources. They are loving and busy dealing with very big emergencies all hours of the day so sometimes there is a wait or a cost but itâs proportionate to what they offer. I donât know what we would do without Blue Pearl.
BluePearl charged me for a procedureâŠ
BluePearl charged me for a procedure for my dog but when they weren't able to cure him, they asked for more money to do the same procedure again in hopes it would help the second time. When I refused and asked for my pets medical records to go somewere else, they stopped communicating and are still doing what they can to make my dog worse. What kind of pettiness does it take to refuse to just forward the records for the animal's sake.
I don't write reviews ever
I don't write reviews ever, But in this case I must. I brought my 7 y.o. female cat there because she was losing weight for the past month and throwing up right after eating a few times a week, she also got weak from not eating, This was Christmas eve mind you. We arrived at the hospital and filled out the paprwork on her and waited for the vet. We were called in to the examination room and the vet was looking her over , asked about her history etc. they took her into a back room and I waited and waited, There was a emergancy case that came in that needed immediate care. So I waited and waited again ... finally the vetcame out and said her bloodwork looks fine everything normal range, She then said maybe an x-ray on her to see if there might be a blockage in her abdomen and told me the price . At this point I was so worried there was something realy wrong with my cat I said do it. An other 1-1/2 hrs later it came back negitive she the vet said we gave her some fluids and a antidiarria shot and suggested an ultrasound might show something the x-ray didn't pick up on. I agreed and then was told the person wasn't there today. She also tolk me if the cat dosn't get better by the next day I should take to a animal hospital a.s.a.p. so 4-1'2 hours later and 1,700.00 dollars later I left with a sick cat and a empty wallet. They were a little cold and standoffish and seaming to be following some wierd protocol system, I can't explain it but If anyone wen't there you know what I'm talking about.
Now comes the interesting part to this story. Holiday weekend and she was fading fast. Friday I called that large hospital located in Paramus and the e.r. said they were full and it the wait time was some crazy 7hrs etc. On Monday I called another Vet and they said to bring her in, so I did. It would up that she had a bad tooth that was infected which they easly popped -out , and a little sinus infection from the tooth. They gave her Doxycylen and said tke her home so she be on the mend. 15 days late she is fine now Thank God!.
What realy pisses me off is spendall that money at blue pearl how could they miss the infected tooth when they took her in the back for the exam???????
If I didn't reach-out to another vet she would have died. I will never ever bring any living animal to that sh@?hole place. How on earth can they miss the obvious? OR, did they see it and not say anything just to drain more money out of my wallet?. I'll never no but I learned a good lesson Find a vet you cn trust with great reviews before you have this happen to you.
Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital Sandy Springs, GA
My dog was in pain & paralyzed, I was required to pay $11,180 before Blue Pearl would treat him, had to be paid in advance. I felt pressure to go through with it. Was not informed about a program offered to cover costs. For over an hour, was on the phone to get 2 credit cards to cover the costs at 5:00 in the morning after driving 2 hrs to get there. Was not informed before surgery that my dog would need rehab or other charges, I did ask. Would NEVER have let my pet go through this had I known there would be more costs. A discount was on my bill but at checkout it had been removed & Blue Pearl wanted another $4000. When they released him, I was given info that neurology was to call & explain but didn't. My dog got pancreatitis again, everyone knew this was a possibility. He was sent home with less effective meds for possible pancreatitis than what he was given while in the hospital. Had to go to his vet & pay $493 to find out he should have been sent home with Cerenia. Even the surgeon picked Cerenia when I asked which one, since I had several meds between the vet & the hospital.
I sent an email last week to neurology, no response. I sent an email this morning letting them know that my dog is not doing well, no response. I received an email saying my dog had not been seen by the vet since 2020, (they contacted the wrong vet) & also saying that I owed another $766.37, not a response to my email, another bill. Called to tell them my dog was throwing up, was told to limit his water intake. Received an email that Dr. Johnson would be calling to check last night or this morning, that call came days later only because I called & complained. They were wrong and my dog needed more water & fluids, had pancreatitis & needed to be hospitalized. I'm left with figuring out how to keep him comfortable & what to do next. I feel we have been abandoned by the hospital & our own vet who recommended them. I would rather have put him down than put him through all this. It's all about the money. I gave Blue Pearl a chance to make this right before I wrote this review but I've just gotten a lot of excuses, they have said they should have done better and things will change, I sure hope so but doesn't help me now that I am out of money and my dog is suffering. Blue Pearl Sandy Springs, GA or any Blue Pearl, stay far, far away!!!! And check reviews even in an emergency situation, I wish I had!!
My dog was found to have an enlargedâŠ
My dog was found to have an enlarged heart and was scheduled to see a heart doctor on 12/18/25. On 12/15/25 the heart doctor technician recommended Blue Pearl for oxygen and said they could come over if needed. On the 16th I called Blue Pearl and when I arrived my dog got out of the truck and walked inside. I was met at the entrance and a lady picked up my dog and walked away. She returned, escorted me to a room and said the doctor would be in. The doctor came in and basically asked me if I wanted to try to resuscitate my dog if needed. A couple of minutes later the lady came in with the cost for different medical treatments that may be needed. One was 2800. and the other was 4700. plus or minus and to treat my dog and I would need to pay 3800. dollars. At the front desk I paid and was shocked to be asked for a donation. But I had to pay before my dog could be treated. I left to get my daughter and on the way back the doctor called and said my dog died. From information I found on the internet t.he medications given in my opinion were questionable to give to a 9 year old dog with heart problems. First and last visit to Blue Pearl they are about making money rather than carrying our pets.
These people like animals
These people like animals. They treated my dog well and Iâm very pleased with the outcome.
Do not EVER bring your pet to Blue Pearl!!!
If I could give less than one star I would. I rarely if ever write a negative review, but feel people should be aware of how poorly Blue Pearl Oak Creek Wisconsin is run. Our Dog Sitterâs brought our 7 1/2 pound one year-old pup in for possible toxicity due to possibly swallowing Warfarin. I gave permission to Blue Pearl over the phone for bloodwork/toxicity to be done and nothing was done. The sitters were told the possible ingestion was fine for her size and she was sent home with nothing more than vitals done and instructions to watch her for the next 72 hours . I conferred with two vets who both said that info was completely wrong and she was brought in to our family vet that day for blood work. Thank goodness it was done as her blood work showed that her clotting factors were off and she was started on medication to rectify the symptoms. Had this not been done, it is highly unlikely that she would be here today. I did speak with Blue Pearl who told me that bloodwork was refused. I gave permission over the phone and the dog sitters did not refuse this. I was told thatâs what they heard and there was nothing they could do about it. A charge for $200 to do absolutely nothing but send her home with instructions to watch her is ridiculous. Do not ever bring your pet there!!!
Blue Pearl sucks
I rarely write reviews, but I feel strongly that others should know about our experience with Blue Pearl Veterinary on Ulmerton Road in Clearwater.
Our pet â and our family â went through a heartbreaking week there. What began as hope for expert care turned into emotional exhaustion and financial pressure. We were charged nearly $20,000, yet received very little in the way of genuine compassion or transparency. Every step felt like a sales pitch, not a partnership focused on our petâs health.
We trusted them during one of the most vulnerable times of our lives, but that trust was misplaced. The emotional toll has been overwhelming, and we donât want anyone else to go through what we did.
Please, seek care elsewhere â with professionals who treat both you and your pet with honesty and empathy.
One star is far too generous.
Justice for Betty
If I could give a zero review for the Blue Pearl Hospital in Glendale Arizona I would. A family member of mine recently had a horrible experience due to someone checking the wrong box on paperwork. We take care of our pets and love them like family, we hope that the people entrusted with taking care of pets during medical emergencies understand this. The careless mistake of checking the wrong box has devastated our family. Do better.
Animal Respect & Misdiagnosis
Updated review:
I am writing this, I believe, as a suggestion for your staff to consider. We recently had the unfortunate need to use your services for our â family memberâ. It is important to remember that most people who love their pet as much as we did, will find a way to pay the fees that you charge and hopefully, God willing, will be able to take them home alive and well. Unfortunately, we couldnât do that. We decided to take our âfamily memberâ home with us to bury him on our property. My suggestion to you would be to have a more respectful way of sending home your deceased patients. We picked up our beloved pet in a garbage bag. It literally looked like a bag of garbage, and he was dropped into the bag, not lying flat, but in a crumpled-up ball. Very disturbing to us. I think that after paying $5000.00 for a partial day of care, just a small amount of those funds could have been used for a more respectful way of sending him home. Perhaps, still in a bag, but lying flat in a waterproof box of some sort. This is just a suggestion to leave your customers with a better feeling about your services and how you care for even your deceased patients.
Since I posted this review, the lab work was revealed to me. The treatment given to our pet was for a misdiagnosed disease. I wrote letters to both the Vancouver and corporate headquarters and have yet to hear back from them after a month. Still donât know why our pet died. Very disappointed in this organization.
It is 12/3/2025 and we have received a phone call from the Vancouver office. Apologies and a promise to look into the misdiagnosis. This was 2 weeks ago and still donât know why our pet died.
I brought my dog in and he was havingâŠ
I brought my dog in and he was having Seizure like activity, he walked into the back of perfectly fine, and then all of a sudden he went into cardiac arrest. The vet that was on that day was awful, nasty, and non compassionate. The vet tried to tell me that my dog did something else and I am in the medical field and I know what my dog was doing. I know a syncope episode versus a seizure. When the girl at the front desk came in, I was having questions about the care of my dog, and she was supposed to go grab the vet and the vet did not come in after they pronounced my dog deceased. She did not come in and send her condolences or anything. I had more interaction with the techs that were good and compassionate. If I read the reviews on here and on facebook before bringing my baby to them, I wouldâve never brought my dog. Iâm sorry, but I treat my animals like my children. They should as well because sometimes people only have animals as their children and they should be treated as such..
Took our dog there for an EMERGENCYâŠ
Took our dog there for an EMERGENCY visit since our vet was closed. Our dogs eye was dripping blood at the front desk. They put us in a room, took the dog back for his vitals. Brought him back to us with a cone on his neck and said the doctor would be back to talk to us. We waited 45 mins to an hour and no doctor. I went several times to the front desk and was told they are reviewing his chart. We finally decided that since they weren't taking this serious,we had to leave and would plan to see our vet the next day. What is the point in being an EMERGENCY hospital. We were willing to pay for the cone and "visit" while the one girl said she has to see if they put charges in yet. While the other girl said we weren't seen by a doctor so there's no charge. I have never encountered such an unprofessional establishment in my life.
Better Alternatives! See why!
We took our micro bully for urgent care for labored breathing and from the moment we walked it was upsell after upsell. We went in and just for visit cath and x-rays we were at 1600.00. I could not accept it; I told them I had trust issues and started getting verbal. My wife told me to chill so I held my tongue. Then we asked if we could see our pup so I could make a call on whether to proceed. They said OK, so I waited patiently in the front desk area for 15-20 min. I wanted to ask what the holdup was but didn't want to be anymore disrespectful being that I was openly distrusting of them. Next thing I know a sherif walks in asks me to get up frisks me takes my pocketknife away and says that he got a call about threats being made. We managed to diffuse the obvious lie and asked for our animal back and to charge what they had done so far. They ripped her band aid off brought her out and charged us for cath even though no meds were administered. I will never go back. If you are emotional about your animals and care about whether youâre getting ripped or not stay as far away from this place as possible. We went to Westbury more professional half the price.
Treasure your pets because it could be their last day
There are a lot of bad reviews, I guess it depends on the vet that is on your case. The vet on my case with my dog was compassionate and understanding. Nothing in this world could have prevented what was going on with Sebastian. The team that was with me every step of the way was respectful, courteous and kind. I was blessed to have savings to pay for the diagnostics to know what exactly was going on. I would be in more agony wondering what if he could have been saved. My only regret was not taking my other dog with me because she still looks for Sebastian; if she was there to see him pass, she could heal too. As for the staff that was there working on my dog and helping at the end of his journey here with me, they have my thanks and gratitude.
For pet owners that don't have insurance try and save out of each paycheck or there is care credit (a loan to pay).
Blue Pearl came through for Pilgrim & us 3x.
Dr. Kenney, Alex & the Blue Pearl team were so empathetic to our situation. Our beloved 15 y/o spaniel boy, Pilgrim, was helped in completing his journey with us. Though our hearts are broken, they made the whole ordeal a lot easier for us and our boy. We feel very blessed that God gave us 15 wonderful years with Pilgrim, and guided us to Blue Pearl at the end, plus 2 previous times Blue Pearl saved our boy from serious illnesses & gave us extra years with him.
