Our purchase took almost 18 months to complete, in many ways due to the way this firm handled the transaction. They were acting for the seller, and throughout the process they were not just slow—they appeared completely disorganised and showed very little interest in progressing the matter or resolving outstanding issues.

The lack of communication and urgency was astonishing. Even our solicitors, who have been practising for many years, commented that they had never experienced anything quite like it.

Eventually, we found ourselves doing much of the work that should have been handled by the seller's solicitors just to keep the transaction moving. Even after providing the information and assistance they required, responses were often ignored or absent altogether.

The final stages summed up the entire experience. After confirming they had everything they needed, a completion date was agreed and we transferred all of the funds to our solicitors in readiness to complete. At that point, they suddenly claimed they were missing a document and then went completely silent for another two weeks, ignoring calls and emails from our solicitors.

We ended up contacting the seller ourselves to obtain the outstanding document and ensure it was sent over. Even after receiving it, they still failed to respond to our solicitors for a further two days. It was only after we telephoned the firm and made a complaint that they finally proceeded to exchange within 20 minutes of our complaint.

The entire experience was unnecessarily prolonged, stressful and frustrating. Based on our experience, I would not recommend this firm.

I had an excellent experience with my solicitor Tiffany Shoesmith from start to finish. She was professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire process. Communication was always clear and prompt, and she always took the time to explain everything in a way that was easy to understand.

What really stood out was her attention to detail and genuine commitment to achieving the best possible outcome for me & my little girl. I always felt reassured knowing my case was in such capable hands.

Extremely poor service

Charged me the majority of the fees for selling a house when we hadn’t even got to the point of exchanging contracts

Asked for a breakdown of charges did not provide. Invoice received looked like it was simply thrown together

Terrible communication and as a first time solo buyer this gave me a lot of stress and anxiety

Paid this company thousands of pounds they did bare minimum for myself and towards family court, ultimately losing the case constantly asking for hundreds of pounds every other week for no work whatsoever done, the day of final hearing demanding a cost of £650 then heard nothing at all until months later a received a Radom letter which look like a school child had written it demanding once again money. This has now lead to threats against me with bailiffs this firm of lawyers are bullying me Tiffany shoesmith was incompetent, lack communication did not demonstrate any knowledge or assistance on the matter. Lee Hassall is overly persistent and aggressive in his dealings with me trying to obtain final payment which I dispute.

Edit, I will not be contacting you further on this matter I no longer wish to receive threatening correspondence or phone calls from anyone at your firm. I am in the process of filing legal proceedings against you regarding harassment under Lee Hassall and negligent practices under Tiffany shoesmith.

5 months on from our sale and purchase and we’ve just had a HMRC demand and fine for non payment of stamp duty. The solicitor has had it for all this time and I can only assume thought it was a bonus! Unbelievable! Better still there is no rush to resolve it as the solicitor is on holiday so we will have to wait until she gets back!
Update since leaving my review Lynsey has been in touch and is taking steps to correct this issue. So far it looks like it will be fully resolved quite quickly. It took 11 weeks to fully resolve and I have increased the rating accordingly given my experience.

I thaught Hall smith whittingham were bad, but 3 weeks into the process im still trying to get past the ID checks through LEGL, not good so far i now have to drive to a branch to present the same information again!!!

We recently needed to consult a Solicitor regarding an aspect of family law. Upon advice, we booked time with Angela Gleave, of B&B. The whole process was simple and efficient. We found Angela to be easy to talk to, empathetic, extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. She offered sound advice, an alternative perspective and plenty of opportunities to ask questions. We came away feeling far more confident in our ability to manage our situation and shall consult with, and engage Angela to handle our case, should the need arise.

Look they are ok as straight forward solicitors with no risk. They certainly aren't the erin brockovich of this world. In fact trying to get them to engage in your case is almost impossible...it's like they don't want the custom...so weird.

After receiving excellent service previously, on conveyancing and wills, I recommended my daughter use this practice to get some family law advice. We saw solicitor Kevan Hankinson, who we found to be very approachable and who was able to impart a lot of valuable advice. Would definitely recommend this solicitors

Su Wilson from Frodsham recently handled my house sale and I couldn’t have wished for a smoother experience or transaction. I didn’t have to chase anything up even once and it all went through smoothly in 8 weeks as agreed. I can’t thank Su enough for her hard work and would whole heartedly recommend Butcher Barlow in Frodsham.

Can’t thank Amanda O’hare enough for her support. Due to her efficiency we moved into our new house really quickly. On the day of completion we would not have moved in if it wasn’t for Amanda going the extra mile for us.

Despite saying multiple times, to two different people, they keep getting my name wrong. It’s a simple British name, nothing difficult. Yet they can’t get it right and keep calling me by my middle name. Once is a mistake, twice is incompetent but 3+ is just lazy and disrespectful.

Avoid at all costs they are absolute charlatans appalling business practices barely fit for purpose….

Reply to generic response…. I tried at the time to resolve issues and got nowhere just aggressive threats so no I won’t be contacting you.

Just my personal experience… ok for simple Will writing but I wasnt happy with another services …..

I am a buyer of an apartment and this is my seller's solicitors firm. I am writing about their office on 413 Bury New Road Prestwich M25.
My solicitor already done everything ready to go and set date of completion on the 5th Nov and this solicitor showed how unprofessional and careless by handling the case poorly as contacted us to tell us his paperwork not completed claiming further documents needed from some source. It was not unforseen to justify their poor performance if they only seeked the documents early in the process. My solicitor and the agency were all shocked and surprised of why wasn't done earlier. This solicitor is absolutely waste of time unresponsible and if was my solicitor I would have demanded full explanation and would definitely go through formal complaint.
So BE AWARE and think twice before instructing them.

I had been recommended by a friend to use Butcher & Barlow and I made the right choice. Kimberley and Laura made the whole process seemless and were always available for any questions that I had. Their business is very open, and I knew each step of the way what was happening and kept updated. I would thoroughly recommend anyone to use them!!
