More Mediocre Than Luxury at Champneys Tring
I’m a regular spa-goer (at least 2-3 trips a year), and I booked Champneys Tring expecting a premium, stress-free experience. Unfortunately, the customer service so far has been the opposite.
It’s been almost impossible to reach anyone by phone, and email replies have been slow, inconsistent, and inflexible. I simply wanted to modify our included 50-minute facials to massages — as advertised (“upgrade any treatment to a massage from £40”) — but was told this wasn’t possible except under restrictive and confusing terms. Even worse, guests wanting to downgrade to shorter massages were asked to pay an extra £40 each.
Staff repeatedly cited “terms and conditions,” yet the only ones available are the generic ones on their website — there are no specific booking terms shown during the purchase process. That lack of clarity feels misleading and unfair.
I’ve yet to experience Tring itself and sincerely hope the on-site staff are more understanding and solution-focused. I’m still looking forward to the visit, but a part of me is also worried about having to try and resolve issues with our treatments given the difficulty I'v so far faced. Champneys’ pre-arrival communication has been beyond disappointing.
* rating increased following my actual visit to Champneys Tring 18-19 Oct 2025.
On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised. Staff were polite and helpful throughout, though it did feel slightly understaffed at lunch. The spa facilities were excellent and plentiful, and our rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-presented.
However, the dining experience was inconsistent. Breakfast was limited — no bacon, sausage, or pastries for residents. Hot food was only warm, and with cold plates, it was tepid by the time you sat down. Lunch, served buffet-style, was again lukewarm and felt more cost-cutting than premium. Healthy food doesn’t have to be unappetising, but presentation and temperature let it down. Dinner, by contrast, was delicious — generous portions, good options, and well-prepared dishes.
Service at dinner could have been better. We ordered drinks at the start but were never offered refills, so ended up with just the complimentary water.
Cleanliness overall was good, though there were dusty cobwebs near windows and radiators in the restaurant. In our rooms, the shower screens didn’t stay in place, sending water across the floor, and the baths were slippery (make sure you put the mat down before you use the bath-shower). The shower heads were too low, forcing you to angle them up and potentially spill even more water. Longer hoses would easily fix this.
In short, Champneys Tring has excellent facilities and kind staff, but the experience didn’t match the premium price or brand reputation. A little more attention to detail — in communication, food quality, and maintenance — would make all the difference.
Tacky pedicure
I had a spa day at Champneys Mottram hall and had pre booked and paid for a pedicure.
I had the pedicure at 3pm and the nail polish wouldn't dry to enable a top coat to be applied.
I was asked to return for the top coat to be applied prior to me going home at 5pm.
I rejoined my family and on closer inspection my nails were a mess.
I went and complained and was offered a redo but as I was going home this wasn't possible.
I said I would pay for the manicure but would like to be refunded for the nail painting.
I was told that I had already received a 25% discount on the treatment when I booked, which I was unaware of.
That aside I explained should not effect the quality of the pedicure !!!
The manager with who was dealing with my complaint didn't seem to grasp the situation and wasn't prepared to resolve the matter.
I found the quality of the pedicure very poor and the customer service as tacky as my toenails.
On my return home my socks were stuck to my nails !!!
Not a good end to what had been a lovely day at the spa with my family.
Disgusting and very disappointing
I went to champneys in Tring for my Birthday in September and the service was terrible our room was upgraded and the room was stuffy and freezing cold the food was buffet style and cold the staff were lovely and couldn’t apologise enough I felt bad as byways upset such a shame when I complained to management via email I was told that I was advice kitchen was closed and their was nothing they could do apart from contact my bank !!!!! I was not happy and won’t be returning
Insulting
When we entered the restaurant for breakfast a bald black guy asked if we was here for spa day then looked at me and said “I said your welcome don’t you know what welcome means” in a aggressive manor I was taken a back and bewildered didn’t really know what to say. It made me feel uncomfortable and he wouldn’t look or talk to me for the rest of the day, this is not the way I would expect a front of house staff to behave. It tainted my stay and I found it quite insulting. Me and my partner have been visiting for over a year now and this is the first time I’ve had a uncomfortable experience with your member of staff at eastwell Ashford branch of champneys
The overall experience was disappointing
Eastwell Manor - The overall experience was disappointing. From the comments made by the restaurant staff at dinner, to the poor quality of the room, a number of items needed maintaining I.e holes in the walls, broken and missing tiles on the bathroom floor as well as the drains for the sink and shower not draining properly, as well as the mattress on the bed that clearly needs replacing. The Spa staff were amazing and the facilities were great. It's a shame the sauna wasn't working though. We paid lot for an overnight stay including treatments. I wouldn't stay there again but would recommend the spa. The gym was good but some bits of equipment also need some TLC.
I am a regular visitor to champneys…
I am a regular visitor to champneys Henlow, since 1997, staying a couple of nights there whenever I can.
Their treatments are amazing. Whatever they do on their in-house training scheme really works (I assume it's still done that way, it certainly has been for years!) I had 3 treatments during my last visit. Amy who did my massage the first day was great and I learnt a few things about massage from her! Dawn did me a massage on my 3rd day, and had such a great way about her, professional, warm and gave me a fabulous massage too! I slipped away in pure relaxation from both treatments.
Times have changed since I first used to go. Henlow Grange, as it was then, used to more like your original boot camp, but a luxurious one!'with the focus on losing weight, exercise and treatments to make you feel great.
People couldn't get cake, alcohol or food with many calories. There wasn't even any salt on the tables I don't think?
Now it is more of a pampering location where anything-you-want goes so things have changed, but I still find it is a wonderful place, with the most beautiful grounds surrounding it to enjoy. The food has always been great, and I am glad they switched back lunch from a served 3 course lunch to a buffet. It took up too much time of the day that could be spent in the pool, sauna, steam room, 2 indoor or the outdoor jacuzxi, gyms, classes or sunshine by the river! There's nowhere like it, and I certainly
struggle to find therapists who do
treatments so professionally (without wanting to talk endlessly!) and well, in such clean and pleasant treatment rooms/surroundings.
10/10 a lovely experience
I had a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing stay at Champneys Forest Mere. From start to finish, everything was perfect. The staff were friendly and attentive, and my bedroom was comfortable with a wonderfully cozy bed for a great night’s sleep.
The spa facilities were fantastic, leaving me feeling both relaxed and energised. My partner had the Lava Shell 50-minute massage and said it was absolutely incredible – highly recommended!
The restaurant food was delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented, making every meal a real treat.
Overall, a truly rejuvenating experience. I can’t wait to return in the New Year. Thank you, Champneys Forest Mere, for such a wonderful getaway!
No hot water
I stayed at Mottram Hall on evening of Wednesday 17th September for a company conference. Room was adequate, but there was absolutely no hot water. I made a complaint and was told that there was hot water. I also noted that there were a number of other guests who had the same problem. The receptionist was not apologetic. The manager was not on hand to speak to. I was not offered an immediate refund or alternate room. NOT good enough.
Disappointing and stressful, far from luxury
Would no longer consider Champneys as a "luxury" brand. Recently stayed at Tring and experienced multiple issues, across all aspects from facilities to service.
The food was poor even when ordering supplementary dishes, some staff boarderlined being aggressive. Outdoor Loungers /sitting where all taken even by 10.30am which is less than ideal on a very hot day. Facilities have seen better days and in need of a uplift, in particular bathrooms and communal showers. Rooms don't have a/c and were borderline unbearable to sleep in. Floor in the bathroom was so slippery to the point my guest had a serious accident. Both the fridge and phone didn't work in the room. The list really does go on.
I contacted Tring directly to try and resolve the issues, which made matters worse. I had to chase a response on numerous occasions to then be offer a "gesture of goodwill" which was a stay at a higher value then the one I was complaining about, quite frankly an insult all considering.
Such a shame.
Everything was beautiful
Everything was beautiful! The staff, food, facilities were great! The only thing I would say is the bathrooms needs to be upgraded as it was a bit run down! Considering how nice the facilities looked I was surprised the bathrooms were in this condition.
Feeling more like the Champneys we love
I've been coming to Champneys for many years and it hasn't always been consistent but our last visit we were super happy. You could see the whole place starting to feel more looked after and more like the Champneys we love.
I do want to mention two team members.
Firstly, Erin from the Spa. Friendly, efficient and gave me a fab pedicure. Thank you
Secondly, Mo in the restaurant. Being welcomed back by Mo always makes me smile and he runs a very efficient restaurant making sure everything runs smoothly! Thank you!

I haven't even arrived and tbe experience is awful. App doesn't work. Can't log into the website and phone just ringing out. My booking is wrong but no way to contact anyone to correct it.
Terrible service- booking system did…
Terrible service- booking system did not work and unable to get treatments .
Staff aware off issue - unable to resolve
Deputy manager very rude and expecting customer to know how their internal process work
Zero rating
Zero rating. Disgraceful. Aggressive male member of staff extremely rude to women. Tolerated and unchallenged by management. Steer clear.
Pure relaxation
I recently stayed at Forest Mere with my friend for the night and had the best stay. All staff were particularly attentive, especially Marius in reception. We felt well looked after the whole stay. The room was beautiful overlooking the lake. We did the moon ritual with Evelyn which was an experience I would love to repeat. Evelyn was so knowledgeable and made everyone feel welcome and included. The food was amazing. Zero complaints … and we couldn’t have been luckier with the weather. We will be back!
Bye Bye After 30 Years
This will be mine and my friend’s last visit to Champneys after over 30 years of annual visits. We were disgusted to be charged £8 for a bread roll with our evening meal, that the majority of the exercise classes are now chargeable but shorter in duration, with a reduced programme. The pool area was frequently without towels. The relaxation area (now upstairs) is inadequate in size, especially as the Spa is overrun with day guests paying only £39 for their visit. The rooms needed maintenance, the safe in each of our rooms did not open, nor did the phone in mine. Despite reporting this, our issues were not resolved. My bathroom sink had no plug and there were holes in the wall where a light had been moved, but not properly repaired. The whole experience is now very tired and not what it used to be. My friend and I enjoy different focus for our respective stays and Champneys always used to meet both our needs and expectations, but no longer. We will now be looking for an alternative Spa for our next trip.
Dirty and in need of a major overhaul
I felt that after one year as a member at Henlow Grange spa l must warn others of this way below par spa. I spent the year membership constantly complaining even to MD level which was ignored numerous times. I wrote letter after letter about serious health and safety concerns but NOTHING was done to rectify or improve the lists of things wrong. I believe these things should be reported to EHO!
The place is filthy with pool and hot tub areas with thick grime around water inlets - I even pointed this out to a senior manager called Adam who took pics on this phone but still nothing was done.
Strong smell of sewerage around pool area. Maintenance man walking into pool area with a plastic jug full of something in it and then pouring into pool whilst people swim past.
Beds and chairs around the pool area are filthy with njack and grease stains all over.
Missing tiles from hydro pool and drying room on seating areas which could cause injury.
Outdoor pool is often shut as they can’t get PH balances right.
The outdoor sunbed cushions are covered in black mould and unusable in my opinion.
Facilities in changing room are poor -
Often no towels
Lockers not working
Showers with no doors
Nasty smell in showers
Shampoo and shower gel containers often empty
Hairdryers broken or removed.
These facilities are not large enough for the number of day guests that are buying cheap spa days. Regularly no room to dry your hair.
Classes cancelled last minute.
The Food - don’t even go there. Low quality and not healthy. Worse than school dinners! All done on a budget!
Green mould and mildew all over walls and windows around pool and indoor hydro pool.
I could go on. My complaints were never resolved by Louise/Adam/Lucy,
Then when l cancelled my membership l get emails asking me why!
This spa needs a major facelift. Oh and the staff who are generally nice don’t stay long.
We attended Eastwell Manor for a spa…
We attended Eastwell Manor for a spa day. This is our third visit and have always been very pleased with it. However this visit was mostly disappointing. Firstly, we noticed there wasn’t enough space for everyone to sit inside if they wanted to, so there was a bit of a scramble from some people to get the beds around the pool. The jacuzzi wasn’t working, it was very cold. The other pools inside were colder than usual and the outdoor pool wasn’t really warm enough to sit in in a relaxing way. The steam room and sauna worked fine… thankfully.
The restaurant was quite disorganised at both breakfast and lunch. Took an abnormally long time to be seated, missing cutlery and was then told they’d run out of spoons to stir anything with. The food was very nice when it eventually came. The bill was wrong, and I was also given a bill that didn’t belong to me (I could see it wasn’t my name), when I said it wasn’t ours I was told the name was just spelt wrong. Disappointing they wouldn’t just accept I knew the name was wrong… but we got there in the end.
The massages were nice, but did feel like the staff didn’t really want to be there.
Overall, we still made the most of it and had a relaxing day but it feels like a lot of money to then find quite a bit of it not working properly. It’s unlikely we’ll go back which is a shame. Has definitely been better previously.
no response to complaint- again!
I have complained because of the impossible length of time to get through to make a booking and it not working. It went to the 'head' but they never got back to me. It is unbelievably badly managed.
Disgusting service (Booking confirmation no 7792397)
Disgusting service. I had booked a massage at the Mottram Hall Champneys spa. When I arrived, there was an argument going on at the desk between two customers and the lady behind the desk over a lost booking. It went on for twenty minutes during which time I continued to stand there waiting as my treatment time drew nearer. A kind lady from the gym was doing her best to get other members of spa staff to help me but they were rude and offhand to both me and her. I was asked to go into my treatment unchanged and as I was but then had a robe and a wristband thrust at me with no explanation as to what it was for or where the changing rooms were. I told her I was unsure where to go or what to do as I had never been before but there was just no clarity at all. I went to the changing room but could not get in even with the fob. I returned to reception and was told I’d be booked in but other customers continued to be served before me and at this point I’d had enough. A spa treatment is a very personal thing and I had lost all confidence in the experience by this time.
I explained that I was upset about the way I had been dealt with and that I wanted to cancel the treatment and go home. The kind lady who had tried to help supported my account of events but despite this, the supervisor who came to speak to me (and who just made a load of excuses) insisted that I would have to speak to the manager before they would give me a refund. Even though their own staff had seen everything that had happened.
I will not be speaking to their manager and they can keep the money. I refuse to beg and plead for a refund to someone who has, by extension, treated me like dirt. They can keep the money as it’s clearly more important to them than customer service.
