The good things first... some of the people we dealt with were really pleasant, they made the process of organising viewings pretty easy and they seemed to be providing good information to the prospective buyers.

The bad... The initial valuation was a mile off the final selling amount. They recommended £475k which we felt was a little low compared to the zoopla figure but everyone else suggested a lot lower. So we went with Chancellors but we should have trusted the majority of valuers. Selling price was £400k.

The screening of buyers was poor... our first offer came from a couple who claimed that they had no chain. We only found out that they did have a chain when the couple mentioned it on their second viewing, which was over 2 months after the initial viewing. I'm not blaming Chancellors for the initial misunderstanding but they should have called us as soon as they realised this fundamental change in circumstances. This chain broke four times and the sale fell through.

When we decided to remarket the house after the initial chain broke and we explicitly said that we did not want any more buyers with chains as we were at risk of losing the house we were buying. This was ignored and of the next 3 viewing that were organised, two had chains. There was no attempt to screen these out.

By far the worst aspect of this company is their after sales support system. The first person assigned to us didn't provide any updates at all without prompting and usually those updates were given by the branch. We went in to the branch and spoke to them about this and we were promised weekly updates. This did not happen. We then asked for another person to handle our case and this person was even worse... they did not provide updates, any information that they did provide unbidden was always after we already knew about what was going on and they had no involvement in helping us set an exchange and completion date which was their main responsibility. Worse still, when asked to push for a status update they came back and told me that they were next scheduled to look at our case was for the coming Wednesday... the opposite of responsive. Even worse than that... when we were close to exchanging and completing I urged them to be active in the process and help us over the line and I heard absolutely nothing from them until after we had exchanged.

In short there were some positives but the overwhelming experience with this company was really really bad. We hadn't moved for 25 years so I don't know what the industry is like but this was shockingly bad and any sense of an estate agent providing support through the process was largely non-existent.

We did move in the end and we did sell to a buyer that Chancellors introduced and that process was quick and largely painless. However I believe that this was despite Chancellors, not because of them.

I have occasionally thought that companies charge too much for the services they provide but this was beyond the pale. I have never settled an invoice more begrudgingly in my life.

I would recommend Chancellor’s to sell your property.

I cannot praise and thank Louise Hamilton (Lettings Manager, Thatcham Branch) and Natasha Rones (Lettings Progression Advisor) enough. They have both been exceptionally professional and proactive in their approach and were always polite, friendly and personable throughout the letting process. They have kept me updated on a regular basis, quite often checking in late in the afternoon at the end of their busy day when, in my experience, most other agents would have been heading for the door. These two ladies are truly dedicated to looking after their clients and it shows. Nothing seems too much trouble, they are patient, understanding, listen well and go the extra mile. I have already sung their praises to a family member who will be contacting them when his property is due for re rental and I will definitely be returning for their excellent service in the future.

Today I had the opportunity to view 2 properties with Oliver from the Thatcham office. What i appreciated about the service was that Oliver didn’t put pressure on during the viewings which is often the case when I’ve been to other agents. He was polite, well mannered and helpful in my property search.
