Some brilliance, some not so good
Having played social netball in a variety of places, I would say that there are some things that NetballNights does exceedingly well and others that could do with a rethink.
Firstly, you aren’t put into a team until you’ve done a few refresher training sessions, which is a really good idea. Each team has a break in play halfway through the season and has a training night instead. This is brilliant. The teams are friendly too, which is good. There’s more coaching on how to improve than other leagues I’ve played in. The more social leagues have pretty good umpires too.
Negatives
You are put in a team of 7 players and it should really be 9 per team. There is always a mad scramble for subs.
If you’re in a Monday league, you have to play on a bank holiday, which is rubbish as everyone is away and there are a lot of forfeits.
Each game requires a volunteer to score, which is weird because in other social leagues I’ve played in, the umpires just keep the score.
They force play on wet courts and in the rain, and there have been several injuries as a result, one quite serious. Other social leagues I’ve played in are cancelled at the mere hint of rain. If concerns are raised about safety, you’re basically ignored or told to play slower. This is the main negative of the league and my main gripe!
