The worst online shopping experience and worst customer service ever!

I have pre-ordered samsung 2tb that has 20 days lead time before shipping starts. 2 days after I submitted payment, I saw other shops Already selling it and its ready to ship immediately. The reason I chose Span.com was they stated they are the first stockers in the market. Then the nightmare started when I contacted them about wanting to cancel my order. I have went through a really hard time and a very frustrating experience as a customer. I have been ignored and I was answered by someone called Paywand and he/she was very not informative. After 2 weeks of communication, I was finally emailed that (My order is cancelled based on my request)

I thought that I will get to have my money back (refunded) but now its over 2 weeks and I am contacting them in every possible way and I’m no longer getting any answers. I am competing ignored now. They used to answer at least within 48 hours. I am completely broken and wouldn’t wish this experience to any other person. Please choose another place to buy from. This is not a place that I would ever return to no matter what. STAY AWAY!

Excellent service

Excellent service. Ordered 4 bay NAS with drives and expansion card.
All items were fitted, tested and RAID 5 created, so ready to use straight away.
Ordered Wednesday night arrived Monday.
All I did was resize the volumes to suit my needs, and it was ready for use.

Good Service

Everything worked well apart from the carrier firm DPD did not deliver it until 2days after it was promised, not a major problem with what’s going on, I could definitely recommend the synology NAS I purchased DS2220+.

Very pleased with the NAS a little more work required on despatch.

Very pleased with the NAS, also the packaging was very good so everything arrived in good condition. If, I have one niggle it is that the NAS was supposed to be despatch on Friday, as agreed via email with the engineer, and unfortunately, it wasn't despatched until the Monday. So, I deducted a star, maybe a little mean but I had to alter my plans so there it is.

Despatched a day late

Despatched a day late. Not a problem as such but, I would expect a message to let me know my Order is running late informing me of the revised dispatch date. Unfortunately, I had to message them for this information. Reply to my enquiry was prompt however.

Thank you for your 4 star review John and for your honest feedback. I have looked into this and it would appear that the delay was due to the build configuration taking longer than expected. You are indeed correct that we should have highlighted this to you before you feeling compelled to contact us. This is usually a semi-automated feature that if an order is due to leave us on X day and it is not in the warehouse, then a member of that team would communicate with tech to find out the usual (typically RAID config build times). However, we have recently had to change working patterns/communication in the current lockdown (reducing on-site staff in key areas) and it resulted in a delay in this usually reliable communication. Nevertheless, we did not relay this information quickly enough on this occasion and you should not have had to contact us to find out this information first. We apologise for the delay on your order and hope this does not detur you from choosing SPAN.COM in future. Have a lovely week.

Can't recommend if buying from AU

If you live in Australia, I cannot recommend purchasing from SPAN. Firstly they were not upfront about the costs involved, merely telling me there 'may' be some fees at the border & that they are unaware of costs involved. Upon looking into this 'after' I had to pay the unbelievably excessive duty tax, I discovered that it was quite clearly stated that any purchase above $1000AUD must be lodged & will be subject to duty tax, unless there are special circumstances like charity or medical equipment, etc. There's even a calculator available!! On top of this, they didn't supply an AU power cable so I had to borrow one from a friend while they sent me one. By the time all the costs were added up, it would have been cheaper or worse case, only slightly more expensive buying locally but I recommend this anyway as you have the knowledge that you are definitely covered under AU warranty & you don't have to pay shipping costs overseas for returns/warranty. Another thing to be aware of is your banks foreign transaction fees, thankfully my account gets these refunded.

When it comes to ordering with us and exporting to another region of the world, applying tax calculations in advance is something that we are looking into, but is much easier said than done. We sell quite diverse solutions and in many cases the contents of even a single piece order cover multiple tarrif and item codes, that differing different world regions. Miscalculating this can result in too much or too little being charged in advance of an order. Alternatively, there are paid services that can be arranged by us on these orders to get this established with a degree of precision before shipping an order, but would either require the average order price to rise (to obsorb this service) or would require a 'general sum' to be charged at checkout and then after calculation is established, the difference refunded to the end user - still dependant on satisfaction from the end user. As mentioned, we are looking into options on this currently and till a firm way forward is established, we are highlighting (as you mention) that there may well be fees on imports if ordering from us in the UK that differ depending on the regions. We have been exporting solutions for over 25years to almost universal praise and the have tried numerous different methods to tackle this, however, we are a relatively small business and any solution that we implement at our checkout needs to be both satisfactory for current customers and to continue offering solutions in future for future customers. We appreciate that this is a much broader concern and not one that should be placed at your door, but we just thought it best to explain in response to your review. Regarding the AU plug adapter, we apologise for this oversight and I understand a refund was extended to you when this was highlighted. Nevertheless, we can appreciate that for many reasons you will likely not choose SPAN.COM for your storage needs in future and regardless thank you for your order and for choosing SPAN.COM. Brilliantly constructed website. Order placed and a request made to Lucas who immediately replied and the order was delivered a day earlier than expected. Including build the price bettered buying from Amazon !! I was inspired by watching the nascompares Youtube videos. Thanks to Robbie and Lucas.

New hard disk drive to expand my NAS

I ordered an new drive to expand my existing NAS (also purchased from Span.com) via the website. Extremely easy and the drive arrived the next day. Always good service and knowledgeable when answering queries.
Thoroughly recommend Span.com for all storage needs.

Plugged DS220j in and got it work very quickly

Some problems getting the DS220j to work as a print server but this may be down to using an old printer and windows.

Very good - would definitely recommend.

Impressive Service

Generally Span was very good. Pleased with how they kept me informed me about the delivery and the NAS Server I ordered was delivered and packaged well. They offer to preconfigure the raid installation for you with a subset of available configurations but is unclear what they will use if you do not specify a raid option. They had not slotted in the drives into the server, this is not really an issue but would have appreciated a little note saying what raid it was configured to and to say that the drives need to be clicked in place. The rating I would give them is very nearly five stars. Would certainly use Span again.

I have spoken with the web team and they highlight that there is a note during the checkout process with SpanStor builds that details that in the event of a build being selected without a configuration, that we will set it up with a 1 disk redundancy (eg RAID 1, RAID 5, SHR, etc). However, it is now especially bold/loud in its presentation - this will be addressed and certainly serves to show that feedback is important, as we would not know this is something we need to address, thank you.

Regarding the drives media being removed from your NAS chassis in transit, this is a precaution we employ in certain desktop NAS chassis (eg if they have removable front panels, use non locking mechanisms or are very front heavy) as otherwise heavy shock in transit can damage the drive media or can force the drives+trays out of their respective slots and cause a large amount of damage in motion. However, we should perhaps make it clearer in our reasons for doing this on our site and will address this in the UI on the respective pages.
