Very disappointing

Very disappointing. Expensive tickets. Poor access ( huge traffic queues ). Despite the fact it was the height of the school holidays 5 exhibits were closed. Few animals were visible. Paid £109 for a family of 4 and saw 2 tigers, some tiny monkeys, 1 hyena , a giraffe a very long away and 2 Zebras behind a shed. The fact that the biggest display is a load of plastic dinosaurs sums the place up.

Wish I had read the reviews before booking . A lot of empty animal enclosures. Animal experiences all sold out , looks like the pens were empty to entertain those that bought tickets . Park itself poorly kept. Terrible signage and paths . The most exciting thing I found was the EXIT . Very expensive too to see only polar bears , seals, lions and meerkats . A walk around a local park in future for us . DO NOT recommend , well only to people I hate !

3rd visit, but didn't match up...

This was our third visit; this time with grandchildren and their parents. Didn't match up to previous visits. Visited at end of July and concur with another visitor's revue of 27th July. Several enclosures were empty with no explanations. Few employees around to ask questions. Need more exit signs as not always possible to get map on the app.
More seats along the paths would be helpful if more elderly are taking grandchildren!
The Park's own feedback form doesn't give space to make comments!

Beware of unsafe mobility scooters!!

Family of three for three nights. Had a good time, accommodation was good. My disappointment was the mobility scooter service, £20 per day, I hired it for two days. The scooter was fine on the first day, on the second day the scooter only went at a snails pace on full power, I just entered the park and realised this. I went back and explained this, I asked if I could exchange it for another one, there were about eight others lined up. The response of the long haired auburn supervisor left me feeling embarrassed and upset, she spoke to me as though I was a child, in front of other people, I am 73. I more or less pleaded with her(the supervisor) to exchange it, she refused, saying “that one has been booked out to you now, so you can’t exchange it “!! I explained it was hurting my hand as I had to keep the handle tight down to make it go! She said “trust me it will get you around the park, and it will move at a regular walking pace “.. totally ignoring my disabilities, I tried to explain a number of times to no avail. I pointed out that the speed dial is not working, if it’s not on full power it won’t move? again, she said it worked at a walking pace?? I explained the dial was there for a reason! and parts of the park are uphill, and over bridges where you need a bit more speed…” it works at a walking pace “… she was so dismissive, I asked her if I could speak to someone from management, unbelievably, she smiled at me and said “ that’s me, I’m the supervisor “!!! At this point I just wanted to go back to the hotel, my daughter and disabled grand daughter were at the other side of the gate waiting for me in 26 degree sunshine. I asked “ the supervisor “ if I could have a refund as I didn’t feel safe, “ we don’t do refunds “ was her response. I was so shocked by her attitude, manner, and total lack of understanding and empathy. Why she couldn’t just exchange it was beyond me I said I would leave a review of my experience, she walked away with her arm raised in the air and said “yeah you do that “ This “supervisor “ needs urgent training in social skills, especially covering people with mobility issues. I managed to use the scooter in the park for about two hours, I couldn’t manage any longer. I did mention my issue to another member of staff later in the day, this person ( I don’t want to say who, as I promised not to) told me that it’s not a problem to change a scooter ?? I described the “supervisor “ to which this person said “ I’m not surprised “.
Would have returned for another holiday as my grand daughter loved, but think that ship has sailed.

Visited Monday 27th July. Family Group

Visited Monday 27th July. Grandson (4), Parents, Grandparents and Uncle - £160.00..... Many enclosures seemed empty with no sign of life at all. Revisited these many times during the visit and the same issue. The one thing that spoilt it for us was failure of basic communication. Many of the information signs/posters were worn out and illegible, washed out by sun and weather. Why could the park not have a white board type system that explains why animals might be missing from certain enclosures on certain days. I.e.: the vet is visiting, they are rarely seen before late afternoon, we have lent them to another park, etc etc. This would explain and stop parents with young children aimlessly standing around looking at empty fields. These boards could be updated in minutes daily. Many families we spoke to on the day said the same, "where are the animals, what is the best time to see them?"
Sorry, but wont be returning as not value for money and poor communication, which could be easily fixed.

Appalling conditions for the bears

Appalling conditions for the bears: The polar bears have no proper shelter from the elements, there’s no running water, and the pools are completely dried up. The bears look utterly miserable and neglected.
Hidden animals and constant upselling: The giraffes are kept hidden way in the back where you can't see them at all—they only seem to bring them out when people pay extra for feeding experiences. It’s an extortion trap, not a zoo.
You can’t actually see the animals: The layout and viewing setup are terribly designed. The cheetah wasn't visible at all. The rhino was locked away somewhere too, leaving us to "enjoy" nothing but a massive pile of dung and some toys in an empty enclosure.
Shockingly few animals: The variety of animals is minimal. For such an exorbitant ticket price, there is almost nothing to look at (you’d see more action watching stray cats in a public park).
Shameless commercialization: The grounds are crammed with endless fast-food stalls and souvenir shops cleverly positioned so kids can't escape them. The prices for food, drinks, and cheap trinkets are absolutely sky-high.
Bottom line: I feel genuinely sorry for the animals, the money was thrown down the drain, and the visibility is practically zero. Save your pounds and stay away!

First visit today for 3 adults

First visit today for 3 adults, one baby, costly admission even though we booked beforehand, I can live with that but what I can’t accept is that most of the enclosures are empty, we saw very few animals at all and I have to say it was extremely disappointing, cafe prices for ice cream and drinks was extortionate, I could of still lived with that but the lack of animals was disgusting, save your money and go for a walk round a park with a picnic, that’s basically all this is! a very expensive day, I do not recommend, it’s a total waste of money, I heard a man say to another group, I’m going to walk round for an hour and see if I can find any animals, so disappointing.

Really disappointing

While appreciating the animals have large enclosures for their welfare this makes for a very disappointing visit for children looking forward to seeing them as the advertising is all about come and see the animals. The food and coffee outlets were closed and the only one open ,Safari house, was awful with frozen sandwiches and dirty tables

Terrible day came for my birthday and the place was full of school trips at least 8 groups on a regular Monday not half term they where everywhere messing around I couldn't enjoy any of my photography. Poor signage, overpriced cafee and lacking in staff

I see some people giving bad rating because the animals are not out? You cannot make them come out and its not the Zoo's fault. However, I do have to knock a rating off which would have been five stars. The main issues I have with my first visit are a genuine and recognizable problem. This comes down to some poor signage and lack of staff. The place itself is very well designed with beautiful scenery and large, spactious areas for most of the animals to roam. The problem is I spent a lot of my time getting lost due to poor signage which doesnt clearly point you into the direction of various animals. I completley missed the sealions until I was leaving. There was construction work going on in various areas, and there's not enough signs to continue your guidance to specific animals. Once it opens up with different routes, it becomes more of a guessing game. But the biggest issue is the lack of staff. I wanted a drink and something to eat and every sign small stall had the shutters on. Not a single one open which means you had to go to the cafee. The prices are extortion and this is soemthing I disliked. Just because they can charge it they do. A regular sangwitch 5.50 and bottle of coke nearly 4 pound? When they start to take advantage of people who have already paid a high price to enter, especially with no stalls open and udner staffed, it's a big turn off and takes away some stars. It's a shame because the place is beautifully designed with great scenery and collection of wild animals. But i missed the wolfs and some other animals due to the poor signage. For so much walking, it should be better. Aside from this it was great but those issues are human errors that need fixing.

Not for me

Not for me, it just makes me sad to see animals kept in such small confines. The staff were mostly unhelpful and it just felt like a huge shopping experience. I wouldn't go back.

Hardly any gluten free foods

We’ve been several times and it is very expensive, especially considering not all animals are on view. My main issue is the lack of gluten free food. I messaged customer services who said each eatery should have 1 gluten free option. Just one? That’s appalling as figures just released say at least 1% of the population are gluten intolerant. When I checked menus, hardly anything - mainly sides. Their second response said to phone the eateries.
Sadly taking my own food is the only way forward

Left very disappointed

2 hour drive each way, over £60 for my son & I on tickets & overall waste of time, fuel & money. Very little to see, lots of walking around for nothing, overpriced places to eat serving not much more than sandwiches. Would not recommend we left early having walked around the whole place for a long journey home with a disappointed child questioning why he didn't see many animals

I'm flabbergasted at the bad reviews of…

I'm flabbergasted at the bad reviews of this place so have decided to write a review even though it was almost 12m ago since we visited.

We were travelling down from York back home to Birmingham and because of the early time we had to check out by, decided to stop off at this zoo on a whim and check it out.

Firstly we didn't think the price for entry was unreasonable compared to a day at a theme park for example where you queue for hours then end up maybe only going on a handful of rides if your lucky!

We entered the zoo downloaded the app as suggested which I thought was a well made app and useful and were greeted by the sea lions which were brilliant. It was amazing to see the area they had which is by far the biggest I've seen for them to swim in at any zoo I've been to before.

Other memorable animals were the polar bears (can't believe a. How big they are upclose and b. How many this zoo has.

The lions were fantastic especially watching them being called over for feeding and walking right past us nice and close.

The cheetahs were also a joy to see and how much space they had to run and play too.

Lemur woods was lovely and the play area close by gave the kids a chance to burn off some energy.

The weather was changeable but a brief rain shower may have dampened our clothes but not our experience. We took shelter in the play area as it's fairly well covered by the tree canopy and took the opportunity to have our packed lunch.

We then saw the giraffes which were wonderful spacial from the high viewing platform.

Be warned, this zoo cover alot of land so be prepared to get your steps in.

The last part of the zoo as its near the exit is the dinosaur exhibit. I've seen quite a few of these at other zoos (West mids safari park for example) and they've all never blew me away but my son who is the Dino nut in our family loved it which is what counts.

For the recent reviews of not seeing many animals I am suprised as we saw loads on our visit - maybe they aren't a fan of the recent weather or were just having an off day. They are animals after all so maybe they just had an off day!

We loved this zoo and would def return if in the area again.

Full, Frank, and Honest Review of Yorkshire Wildlife Park (Accessible Gold Member)

Full, Frank, and Honest Review of Yorkshire Wildlife Park (Accessible Gold Member)
Membership & Arrival Experience
One of the biggest positives for us as an Accessible Gold family is being able to visit without pre‑booking. This flexibility is essential because both myself and my son are disabled, and our ability to visit depends entirely on how we feel on the day. Being able to simply get up and go on a “good day” is the main reason we chose this membership, and it genuinely makes a huge difference to our lives.
Parking is also excellent. There is plenty of space, and being close to the entrance means we can easily return to the car for medication or other medical needs. Signage around the car park seems clearer than on our last visit for the Illuminations.
Entrance & Guest Services
Once you reach the site, the main entrance is surprisingly unclear. The signage doesn’t make it obvious where you’re supposed to go, which can be confusing, especially for disabled visitors who need to conserve energy and avoid unnecessary detours.
Entering through the gates with a membership card is simple enough, but Guest Services is a major accessibility issue. The door is not automatic, and as a wheelchair user visiting guest services alone, I was unable to open it. I had to either wait for another visitor to arrive and open the door for me, or hope that a staff member noticed me waiting outside. Both situations were humiliating and stripped me of independence. It also places disabled visitors at a clear disadvantage compared to non‑wheelchair users, which does not feel in line with the Equality Act 2010’s requirement for reasonable adjustments.
Accessibility Around the Park
The park itself is beautiful and generally very accessible. However, some of the ramps are too steep, and the start/end points of several ramps are uneven. This caused my heavy powered wheelchair to tip backward at one point, lifting the front wheels completely off the ground — a frightening moment that could easily be prevented with smoother transitions and safer gradients.
Aside from those issues, the rest of the park is a pleasure to navigate. I didn’t use the accessible toilets on this visit, so I’ll review those next time.
Food, Pricing & ARFID‑Friendly Options
This is the area that lets the park down the most.
As a low‑income family, we were shocked when we got home and realised we had spent over £125 on food and drinks during one visit. This was for sandwiches, two pizzas, and drinks — nothing extravagant. Because we stayed all day to see the La Gibbons, we needed two meals, but the prices were far higher than expected.
For us, that amount is a week’s worth of food shopping, and it left us with nothing left for the rest of the week. The Gold Member discount barely makes a dent in the cost. And staff do not remind you that you have discount if you are a memmber so, you can easily forget about the 10% discount.
Food choice is also extremely limited for families with ARFID. My son simply wanted chips, nuggets, and sauce — basic, familiar food — but the only place offering that kind of food was the main restaurant, which we couldn’t afford and didn’t want to spend a long time queueing in.
During the Illuminations, the chip van was perfect: affordable, simple, and accessible. Something like that permanently in the park would make a huge difference to families like ours.
Ice cream was another issue. My son will only eat soft‑serve from a machine due to ARFID, but the prices were so high that I had to tell him we couldn’t afford it. That was heartbreaking.
If anything stops us renewing our Accessible Gold Membership later this year, it will be the food prices and lack of affordable, ARFID‑friendly options.

Overall Thoughts
Yorkshire Wildlife Park has so many strengths — accessibility in most areas, beautiful enclosures, and a membership scheme that genuinely supports disabled families. But the issues with Guest Services access, ramp safety, and especially the extremely high food prices make visits financially and emotionally difficult.
With a few changes — automatic doors, safer ramps, affordable food vendors, and simple child‑friendly options — the park could be truly outstanding for disabled and non-disabled families.

Zoo & Hotel visit.

Went as a family of 3 for a park & hotel stay early March. The park itself was ok, like others have already stated there's not a great section of different animals to see but our daughter enjoyed what there was.

The hotel was great. Room was lovely and modern & clean. Great breakfast included in the rate. Staff were super lovely!
