Code Institute Review

Code Institute Review: Outdated, Overpriced, and Useless

If you’re considering Code Institute, don’t waste your time or money. My experience with this program was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. The course is outdated, the support is terrible, and the diploma is useless when it comes to finding a job.

Outdated Material That Causes More Problems Than It Solves

The course material is years old, using outdated technologies and versions that no longer work with current models. This leads to endless issues where code doesn’t function as expected, and I was left confused, wasting hours trying to figure out problems caused by obsolete lessons. Instead of updating their content, Code Institute continues to sell a broken program that sets students up for failure.

Little to No Real Support

When I encountered issues (which was often due to the outdated content), I turned to tutoring sessions for help—only to be met with rude and unhelpful tutors. Some of them couldn’t even fix the problems themselves, wasting my entire session before telling me to wait another week for new tutoring hours to reset. How is a beginner supposed to solve problems if even the tutors don’t have answers?

Mentorship was no better. My mentor’s advice? Compare my code to his old project from three years ago, even though our projects had nothing in common. When he still couldn’t figure out why my code wasn’t working, I was forced to delete everything and start over, with no explanation of what went wrong.

A Rigged Assessment Process That Forces You to Pay More

The way Code Institute runs its assessments feels intentionally designed to make students fail so they have to pay for resets also if you don’t agree with the results well to bad because you can’t contest it. They market themselves as a job-ready coding bootcamp, but the reality is that the course doesn’t prepare you for real-world work at all. When I finished, I realized that I still didn’t have the skills needed to land a job.

Code Institute Cares About Money, Not Students

This company is profit-driven, not education-focused. They prioritize making money over actually helping students succeed. I wouldn’t trust them as my experience was nothing as it was advertised to me.

Final Verdict: Don’t Fall for the Hype

If you value your time, money, and mental health, avoid Code Institute at all costs. There are much better learning options out there with fairer assessments, better support, and up-to-date material. This program was a massive waste of money, and I strongly advise others to look elsewhere.

Dear Nomy,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely appreciate hearing from our students, as it helps us understand their experiences and improve our program. However, due to the anonymity of your review, we are unable to investigate the specific claims you’ve raised.

We want to clarify that our curriculum is carefully developed and regularly validated to ensure it meets the academic standards required for our qualifications. While we strive to provide relevant and up-to-date content, we recognize that technology can evolve rapidly. We take feedback on course material seriously and regularly review and update our offerings to keep pace with industry needs.

Regarding your experience with support, we believe that tutors and mentors should be helpful and responsive. We encourage students to reach out to us directly so that we can address any concerns more effectively. Our mentoring and tutoring processes are designed to support all learners, and we regret that your experience did not reflect this.

We also want to reassure you that we do not force students to delete their progress. Our goal is to encourage learning and growth, and we emphasize that students are free to retain their work and build upon it as they develop their skills. We always tell students that if a mentor or tutor suggests something and it's not something you feel comfortable with, or just don't have the time or the desire to learn something new, that's perfectly fine, you can say so and disregard the suggestion. It's your project, not your mentor's... Equally, if you feel you want to be challenged more, say so. If you have time to implement extra features, go for it. Mentors and tutors are here to help you grow as a developer as well as make sure you're hitting the Pass criteria. It means they may make suggestions on how to achieve those two goals.

As for the assessment and appeal processes, we clearly outline these procedures to ensure students have a fair opportunity to present their case if they feel there has been an oversight. We stand by the integrity of our assessments and believe they reflect the competencies required in the industry.

Finally, we want to emphasize that our mission is to support students in their educational journeys. We truly value your input and invite you to reach out to us directly if you would like to discuss your experience in more detail. Your success is important to us, and we are committed to making improvements based on student feedback.

Thank you again for your review, and we wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Best regards,
The Code Institute Team

My sincere recommendation is to NEVER

My sincere recommendation is to NEVER buy this course! The videos were recorded many years ago with irrelevant information and using old versions of libraries, which only creates a lot of problems. The material on the platform is hard to understand. Slack with thousands of channels is just a waste of time. And if you want to get help from technical mentors, you always have to answer a few questions to a chatbot. And if the answer is not comprehensive, you will be denied help. Sessions with a mentor are absolutely useless, because they don't help you with your code, they just tell you to Google it. On the platform, important information is presented in gray text, which is difficult to read. So it's better to use another course, because this one doesn't really aim to give you knowledge, but only to rip you off and not do their part in return.

Dear Kateryna,

We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with our course. We strive to provide a high-quality learning experience for all of our students, and we would like to address some of the specific points you raised:

Outdated content: We understand your concern about the age of some of the video recordings. We are continuously updating our course materials to reflect the latest versions of libraries and technologies. However, some foundational concepts remain relevant regardless of the specific version.

Difficult to understand material: We are working to improve the clarity and accessibility of our platform materials. We appreciate your feedback on the gray text and will make changes to improve readability.

Overwhelming Slack community: Our Slack community is the heart of Code Institute—our virtual campus where learners connect, collaborate, and support each other. We understand it may feel overwhelming at first, just like any new campus experience, so we provide structured onboarding to introduce Slack step by step. With navigation tools like search, pinned resources, and dedicated channels, plus support from our Community Team and community volunteers, learners gain access to invaluable peer-to-peer support. Those who actively engage benefit from stronger outcomes and a rich social learning experience.

Mentor sessions: Mentors are trained to guide students in their learning journey, not to provide code solutions. They encourage students to develop problem-solving skills by researching and debugging their own code, which is a crucial skill for any developer.

We understand your frustration, but we encourage all students to actively participate in the community, seek help when needed, and dedicate sufficient time and effort to their projects.

We are committed to continuously improving our course and appreciate your feedback.

My experience at the Code Institute was

My experience at the Code Institute was unbeatable. The course is very demanding but you can progress through the course at your own pace as long as you meet the project deadlines. At the end of the course you leave with 5 projects ready to put in your portfolio and show your work to recruiters and future employers. You also have to work well on the projects as they are personal (not in a team) and this forces you to focus and move forward even though you have the help of the Slack community, mentors and tutor. Something unique and interesting about the Code Institute is the possibility to participate in hackathons and meet new people in the projects you have to work on for 5 days and practice working in a group with tools like Github or using Agile. The possibility of doing a specialisation is something that I really enjoyed because it allowed me to develop my final project in an area in which I wanted to develop my skills more and go deeper in this area.

Do Not Pay for this course..

It’s good for teaching you WHAT you should learn for the most part but terrible at actually teaching you the subjects. Video based learning but the videos are very basic and lack most information. Also, student support are useless and can take days to get back to you so if you are on a tight timescale with a project and need assistance you are basically doomed. Your mentors aren’t allowed to mentor you, only guide. They can’t tell you how to do things so you can’t actually get any help from a human being. You have to google anything you need help with. I regret forking out the 7.5k for this course along with some of my fellow students who all feel the same way. It’s fine if you live in Ireland and can do the course for free but DO NOT pay for it. I spent £30 on a course focused on css and learnt much more in those 4 days then I did after 3 months learning through Code Institute.

Dear Mr. Farran,

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We're sorry to hear that the course didn't meet your expectations, and we want to address your concerns directly.

Firstly, our curriculum is carefully designed to align with a specific assessment criteria for our qualifications. The content is meticulously checked and validated against these standards to ensure that graduates possess the skills and knowledge demanded by the industry. This rigorous approach, while potentially different from other learning experiences, is intentional and focused on demonstrable competency.

Regarding the video content, we are continuously working to improve our resources. However, the feedback that the videos "lack most information" is ambiguous and makes it difficult to take action. To help us improve, could you point out specific areas where you think additional explanation is needed? We would value specific examples.

We will also investigate your concerns over student support delays once we have received your details and can confirm this to be the case.

We understand your frustration regarding mentor support. It's important to clarify the role of our mentors. They are trained to guide you through the problem-solving process, not to provide direct solutions or write code for you. This approach fosters independent learning and critical thinking skills, which are essential for a successful career in tech.

We are committed to providing a high-quality education and value your feedback, please contact us to discuss your experience further at any time.

It was okay

It was okay. I did the full 16 week course. Not just the 5 day course that others have mentioned.
I managed to get on the course for free as a job seeker, and I'm glad I did as if I had paid for it I would have been very disappointed.
The HTML and CSS modules were a really good, comprehensive and easy to understand teaching method. So when I first started it had high hopes that I would do really well on the course. However, when JavaScript was introduced it was a different story. I found it quite difficult to learn and for some reason the way they taught it differed greatly from the HTML and CSS sections.
The videos and questions were a bit all over the place. There were times when they would tell you to go and look at a previous chapter to remind yourself, but the resources weren't there. Then they would crop up again later on in later chapters. It was like they took a year long course and shaved it down to a 16 week course.
Once you got your head around the basics of JavaScript you were thrust head long into Python. Likewise again the teaching was really poor and frustrating. I think we ended up doing 2 weeks on python, and then onto Django for our final project.
I understand that there is limited time, but I feel it just wasn't enough time to learn even the basics of what was required.
Very little support from the mentors. My mentor was very likeable, but I felt she lacked knowledge and we were often told she would "look into it" and never got back to you. You were constantly told to go and use outside free resources for answers to questions. This is my issue with the course. You can find everything the course offers on the internet for free. In my case watching YouTube was more enlightening than anything the tutors taught us. The sessions with the experts were watching them make something, which was not only boring but didn't teach us anything.
There were some very good bits, however. The careers advice was pretty good, and for someone like me who has very little experience applying for jobs this was a really good part of the course. I now feel more confident in the jobs market, even if I have decided that the tech world is not my calling.
Coming out of the course it became pretty clear that the tech jobs are none existent in my area of the country, and a lot were based in London and Newcastle (I don't live near either).
I also would have preferred it if the careers advice was a bit more generic, as a lot was about how to get a tech job, something I am clearly not going to get.
Overall I'm pleased I completed it, but I didn't learn anything I couldn't have probably accessed for free ether on the internet or in the community.
Please save your money, and if you are offered a place for free then take it, but don't expect miracles and 3 months later I am still unemployed, but at least I've had a few interview where I've been close to securing a job.

Dear Sarah,

We appreciate your detailed feedback on the 16-week course. We're glad you found the HTML/CSS modules beneficial and the career advice helpful.

We want to clarify that the course you took was an earlier version. We've since implemented significant improvements based on feedback like yours, specifically addressing the JavaScript and Python modules, facilitation support, and resource accessibility. The current version offers a more streamlined and comprehensive learning experience.

We understand your frustration with the job market in your area. While we aim to equip individuals for tech careers, which we view as a positive goal, we acknowledge that regional job availability can vary. We're continuously working to expand our employment partner network in order to broaden career opportunities.

We are committed to providing a high-quality education and value your feedback, please contact us to discuss your experience further at any time.

It wont get you a job

Code Institute is a good learning institution, but they will NOT find you a job. The majority of students who took the Full Stack Development course have not yet found any roles, and most of the vacancies are not related to the skills taught in the course. This course might be suitable for young students just starting their careers, but I definitely would not recommend it for career changers.

Dear Juan,

We understand your frustration and appreciate your feedback. We're committed to student success. While we can't guarantee job placement, we want to clarify a few points. Our career support team offers resources and guidance, and we encourage all students to actively engage with them. We've also seen many graduates secure roles aligned with the skills taught in our program. The level of roles available reflects the experience of the skills we teach, along with the professional level of the learner, and some roles may be more junior to begin with. We are constantly looking for ways to improve and will use this feedback to do so.

In the meantime, our strong advice would be to fully engage and utilise the multiple layers of careers support that remain available to you.

Avoid This Company – A Money-Making Machine Disguised as Education

Do not waste your time or money with this company. Ignore the glowing reviews, as they are likely paid or solicited. This organization is focused on making money rather than genuinely supporting students.

Their assessment process is designed to ensure you fail, forcing you to pay for resets at every opportunity. You are given a maximum of three attempts per project, and each reset requires an additional payment. With five projects in total, you could end up paying for up to 15 resets if they keep failing you for minor issues.

Even if you follow the mentors' instructions perfectly—documenting your code, providing screenshots, and conducting thorough manual and automated testing—they will still fail you. I personally had a project that worked perfectly, was documented with all the necessary evidence, and passed initial criteria. Yet, they failed it after claiming a functionality issue that clearly didn’t exist at the time of submission. They completely ignore their own teachings, leaving you powerless to defend your work.

This company thrives on taking advantage of students’ time, effort, and money. Their assessors are disconnected from what the mentors teach, and they refuse to take responsibility for issues that arise outside your control, such as code-breaking during the long wait for assessment results.

If you value your time, money, and mental health, avoid this program. There are far better options out there with fairer assessment processes and actual student support.

Dear George,

We understand the frustration of not achieving a passing grade, especially after putting in significant effort. Our assessment process is designed to evaluate core competencies, including required functionality which should perform correctly during the formal assessment. Assessment outcomes are based on the live version of the project.

To ensure fairness and accuracy, we offer avenues to address issues such as resubmission and appeal. Our policy clearly outlines fees associated with resubmissions and appeals, which are standard procedures for reassessing projects.

The 5-day coding challenge is fine but

The 5-day coding challenge is fine but for the main course all videos are of low quality and for some of them you can not understand the subject completely and there is no one to ask. If you ask anything from them they will just say search it on Google. I don't recommend taking this course and paying £7000. put £7000 in your pocket and learn everything from Google and Youtube.

Dear Navid,

We are sorry that our course didn't meet your expectations. However, we'd like to clarify a few points. Firstly, our videos are designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject matter, and while they may not cover every possible nuance, they are intended to be a starting point for further learning. Our students are encouraged to ask questions and seek help from our support networks, including student care, tutors, mentors, and our vibrant Slack community.

Regarding the suggestion to use Google and YouTube as a source of learning, as developers, our students are often tasked with researching and troubleshooting complex issues - using search engines is an essential part of this process. In fact, it's a critical skill that we actively teach throughout the course.

If you have any further feedback or concerns, we're here to listen and help. We're committed to providing the best possible learning experience for our students.

Did most of what it said on the tin.

The course was free and accredited, exactly as advertised, and I have recieved a certificate (pdf) that has an official accreditation ref number. It offered a good introduction into coding, with fairly simple step by step guides. I personally found that to fully understand some of the lessons, I needed to attempt to repeat and modify the code in Visual Studio so I could see the effects. Also, in some instances, I needed to find alternative explanations for some of what we had done, or why some code wasn't working, as the videos by themselves were not enough (ChatGPT can be a useful tool for code debugging). Overall, I would recommend taking the course, as it is a solid introduction to HTML and CSS. JavaScript, not so much.
