Don't waste your time if you aren't biologically perfect

I was rejected from healthcare due to a common condition that a high percentage of everyone on the planet has and without even being provided with an alternative option (that covered me for everything but the condition). Their website would have you believe that only extenuating and extreme conditions will lead to a denial of coverage. This is simply not true. I now understand why according to a German government review that 26% of all Germans believe they are discriminated against in health insurance. Feather simply serves to continue that discrimination against those who are truthful about their conditions.

In Germany, private health insurance providers assess applications based on financial and medical risk, and coverage decisions are made solely with these standardized guidelines. Unfortunately, this means that even conditions that are common or well-managed can still lead to a rejection, depending on the insurer’s assessment.

We understand your concern regarding discrimination, and we want to be very clear that Feather does not support or promote discriminatory practices. Our role is to guide customers through a complex system as transparently as possible and to help identify suitable options where they exist.

While our website explains that only certain conditions may lead to exclusions or rejections, the final decision always rests with the insurer and can vary case by case based on all the details of the application.

That said, in many situations it is possible to explore alternatives, such as statutory health insurance, different insurers, or other solutions depending on individual circumstances. We’re sorry if this was not communicated clearly enough in your case.

Disappointing Experience When Real Support Was Needed

I would like to share my experience with my insurance coverage, which unfortunately turned out to be deeply disappointing in practice.

I had both liability insurance and legal insurance, believing I was properly protected in case of unexpected situations. During my tenancy in Germany, I paid my rent fully, on time, and without a single delay throughout the entire contract period.

After moving out, the landlord presented a very high damage claim, largely related to general wear and tear, minor wall markings, children’s drawings, and traces caused by normal use and moving furniture. These are issues that, under German law (§538 BGB), are generally considered normal usage, not tenant-caused damage.

I contacted my liability insurance, expecting support. However, the claim was rejected on the grounds of “excessive use,” without a clear differentiation between accidental damage and normal wear and tear. In practice, this meant that the insurance did not provide coverage in the situation where it was most needed.

At the same time, I sought support from my legal insurance, only to realize that the coverage was either extremely limited or ineffective when facing a real legal dispute. Despite acting in good faith and having full documentation of payments and evidence, I was left to handle a complex legal process largely on my own.

This experience taught me an important lesson: having insurance can make you feel safe, but feeling safe is not the same as being protected. When a real conflict arises, the actual scope, limitations, and practical support of the insurance matter far more than the promise itself.

I am sharing this so others can make more informed decisions, carefully read policy exclusions, and understand that not all insurance products offer meaningful protection when it truly counts.

We understand how upsetting it can be to face a high damage claim after moving out of a rental, and genuinely apologize for the confusion and disappointment caused by the ultimate outcome. It's never our intention to misrepresent our insurance products and how they can support you during unexpected situations in life.

Personal liability insurance in Germany is designed to cover sudden and accidental damage caused by the insured person. It does not cover normal wear and tear, gradual damage, or damage that results from regular or excessive use over time. This is standard across liability insurance, not just through Feather.

For legal insurance, disputes related to a rental home can absolutely be covered. However, this protection is an optional add-on that needs to be actively selected during the signup process. The available coverage options and their scope are shown transparently before a contract is finalized, so customers can choose what best fits their situation.

We take concerns about transparency and expectations very seriously. Feedback like this is valuable to us, and we’re always working to make policy explanations as clear as possible so everyone knows exactly what is, and isn’t, covered before they need it.

Extremely delighted with Feather

I've always had great experiences with the Feather team. They have been super friendly and super dependable throughout. As an expat, English language support has been crucial for me. Feather does exactly that and in addition they are super fast in answering my queries and concerns on the same day. Also their processes are very simple and user friendly. Excellent customer support and advice from Eloi. He knows the insurance products and process inside and out.
As a company Feather has several coverage options to choose from so you can find a good fit for you. The coverage is always competitively priced. The claim process is easy and streamlined.

Great service, done right

Feather was not only very helpful in setting up expat insurance, but also wonderfully responsive when I realized I'd set up duplicate policies. They quickly diagnosed the duplication, and refunded me for the extra policy. Very helpful and determined to do things the right way!

Overall very professional and efficient with great service

First of all, they’re great with their transparency and English support. But they also go above and beyond and are very efficient. Maria was specially a delight to work with. In my case, I was working with very tight timelines, and Maria made it happen within a couple days from quote to confirmation of coverage!

I would highly recommend feather to anyone who’s an expat and is looking for a hassle free experience and is not fluent in German
