The Ness, Shaldon, utter tripe
The ness in Shaldon used to be packed and really decent food.
I wondered why on a Friday evening they were at less than half capacity.
The starters were ok.
The twenty quid burgers were absolutely shite!
Just across the river on back beach, the blue hut will serve you an Amazing local venison burger for less than 15quid.
The Ness was two tiny dried out burgers in an average bun with naff salad and half cold chips.
We both had different burgers they were equally bad.
Won't go again

Beautiful building terrible food
I cannot understand how they can keep dishing out such awful food. We stopped at H&W Milford on sea. It used to be a fabulous hotel. Once again they pick lovely buildings. Such a pity that it has a great view but hopeless in all other respects. I can't blame the staff who are overworked. I could list several things but the main issue is rubbish food arrives in boxes dish it out at a high price. Why woukd H&W care. Maybe game over on the horizon.
Ridiculous time limit on booking lunch
Tried to book lunch at the Duchess of Cornwall in Poundbury - website booking is fine, confirmation straight away – then 2 days later a further email telling me that they were allowing me only 1 hour and 15 minutes for my lunch booking. That’s barely time to order and eat a main course.
Letting you book and make arrangements with friends and then 2 days later drop a 75 minute deadline seemed virtually fraudulent. They say that if you want more time ‘just’ speak to someone when you arrive – but it’s a bit late by then, especially if they say no.
I don’t know if this is just the Duchess of Cornwall or all Hall & Woodhouse pubs – but it’s rubbish service and the customer certainly doesn’t come first.
The Anchor Wisley - Shocking Customer Service from Someone Who Appeared to Be the Team Leader
We visited The Anchor Wisley today and spent over £200 on our meal, so it was extremely disappointing to leave with such a poor experience.
Firstly, the car park layout is very poorly designed. We ended up stuck in our space and physically couldn’t reverse out without risking hitting another car. We went back inside to ask for help, simply hoping someone might assist or advise.
The staff member we spoke to who appeared to be the team leader, a woman with sandy brown hair wearing a flowery top on Saturday 14th March at around 13:50, responded incredibly rudely. Her exact words were, “What do you want me to do about it?” followed by “Sort yourself out.” She then told us to go around to every table asking customers if the car belonged to them, essentially expecting us to interrupt everyone else’s meal and disrupt other guests’ experience rather than offering any help herself.
There was no attempt to assist, no sympathy, and no effort to even acknowledge the situation. For a place that expects customers to spend that kind of money, the level of customer service was shocking. As someone who works in customer service, we would at the very least expect a bit of basic human decency, even just acknowledging the situation and trying to help in some way.
The attitude was rude, obnoxious, and completely dismissive. When a problem arises, even if it’s not directly someone’s fault, basic courtesy and a willingness to help should be the minimum expectation, especially from someone who appeared to be a team leader.
If this is the impression you want to give to customers and represent your brand, something needs to change.
We went to the Bath City Centre one on…
We went to the Bath City Centre one on a weekday early. It is clear from other reviews and having seen how busy it is in the evening that the best times are during a weekday when it is not busy and very pleasant. Charlotte was excellent serving us and the place was less than medium busy so it gave us a chance to really appreciate the food and drink. The service was very good maybe due to the fact that it was exactly the right number of people to staff.
We went to the Anchor next to Pyrford…
We went to the Anchor next to Pyrford lock just before Christmas. I was surprised to see it was fairly empty for the time of year. I think I know why. Although the staff are good and the food is always very good, they have got silly with their prices, especially for wine. My wife had a large Pinot and it was £11.50! Add to that the 12.5% tip, it’s nearly £13 for a “cheap” glass of wine. They have an offer on now for 30% of the total bill Monday to Thursday. At that price I would definitely recommend but sadly, I won’t be able to go anymore and pay full price. It is a beautiful pub though.
Excellent venue, superb food, lovely staff
My daughter chose the Hall & Woodhouse pub in Crowthorne to hold a wake for my husband. I can honestly say that they were absolutely fantastic.
The booking process was simple, the food choices were excellent. On arrival we found we had a dedicated space available for us. The staff brought out the food and it was amazing! We were impressed that they had separate areas for the gluten free food.
All our guests ( there were 40 of us) remarked on the quality and choice of the food.
The venue itself was clean and had a lovely ambiance.
The staff helped to make this a real celebration of my wonderful husband’s life.
I was so impressed that the next day I sat down and hand wrote a letter of thanks to the Manager and staff.
I can throughly recommend this venue to anyone in similar position.
I had never been here before, but I shall certainly visit again in happier circumstances.
Full marks to the Crowthorne team.
Lovely friendly serving ladies, food atrocious, beyond inedible
Lovely friendly serving ladies
The burger could best be described as ‘Minging ‘
Poorest food I have ever eaten
Sack the Cook - truly awful
We’ll give this place a miss, until they improve
Tiny Christmas Pudding!!! £8.50???
Well, Do NOT order Christmas pudding and brandy butter. 2cm high x 5cm, diameter Christmas pud.
£17 for 2x Christmas pudding. We complained, they said Head Office was responsible and refunded.
Utterly disgraceful. Reputation damaged and if your name is Anthony Woodhouse, Chairman of Hall and Woodhouse... Would you give your own Christmas puddings to your family at Christmas.. No of course you wouldn't as it's a Ratners "crap" moment. H&C are the Christmas Scrooge!!!
The food was ok
The food was ok, nothing special. The worst thing was the endless wait for our meals to arrive. There seemed to be a focus on any food allergies, which is good, but it went downhill after that.
My booking experience was very poor
My booking experience was very convoluted and not at all straightforward. I found out that the telephone was out of order which seems incredulous that this never got resolved and I had to communicate via several emails which were not promptly answered. I ended up going in to the restaurant a week before to iron out menu choices. The thing that was the most disappointing was that even though we had to pre order our meals due to the size of the group, one person didn’t get their food at all! We were offered our desserts free of charge (£20’s worth) as recompense but this hardly covered how let down I felt when I went to all the trouble of organising a night out for my family. On reflection, although I accepted the apology and discount I can’t help thinking how poor it was so won’t be recommending or going back.
Great Family Night Out
We had a fantastic night at the The Frog in Deepcut with a family of ten. Great food, excellent service and a fantastic building, Many thanks to Freddie and the team
⭐ 1 out of 5
“Awful Food, Zero Effort” ⭐ 1 out of 5 – Hugely Disappointing Meal at The Cricketers, Littlewick Green
If I could give 0 stars I would! We decided to revisit The Cricketers, Coronation Road, Littlewick Green (SL6 3RA) a few months ago to celebrate a special family achievement. This pub once held fond memories for us — we used to come here often years ago when my eldest son played cricket nearby — but sadly, this visit was an enormous disappointment. It was a sunny afternoon, and we chose to sit outside. The starters were passable, and we expected the main meals to be of similar quality. Unfortunately, what followed completely ruined the occasion. We waited an unreasonably long time for our food, and when it finally arrived, it was cold, poorly presented, and tasted as though it had been defrosted and plated without being heated through properly. Out of sheer hunger, one family member forced himself to eat a portion, but the rest of us simply couldn’t. The food was inedible. The one family member who did eat his food had a bad stomach the next day. What should have been a joyful, relaxing family celebration became an upsetting experience — leaving us disappointed and out of pocket for food we wouldn’t even serve to a pet.
I contacted the manager afterward to give constructive feedback, hoping for an apology or at least an acknowledgment, but received none that restored my confidence.
This pub used to be a warm, welcoming local spot with decent food and atmosphere, but sadly, it’s lost all of that charm and quality. I would not recommend The Cricketers for dining, and after this experience, I certainly wouldn’t return even for a drink. A once-loved local gone completely downhill — cold food, slow service, and no care for customers. Truly disappointing.
Great lunch at The Quay
My husband and I have just had lunch at The Quay in Poole. It was 1 of the nicest lunches that we have had for a long time. The service was fabulous and the food could not have been nicer. The staff made us very welcome. We will be coming back very soon.
Superb venue, shame about the food
I booked a table at H&W Lychett Minster as, a birthday treat for my husband & two close friends for dinner & was delightfully surprised by such a lovely venue coupled with a very large & superb beer garden.
However the meal was a huge disappointment to say the least, it needs to be said we had the pleasure of a lovely Italian waiter who was friendly & professional.
Two of the meals ordered were lamb rump which we had no complaint with But the vegetables were the scantyest I have ever seen, parsnip puree was exchanged for creamed potato, incredibly tiny portion, it would seem on reflection that vegetables would have to be paid for as an extra. all portions left a lot to be desired. Including the desserts, cherry pie had the texture of being reheated in the microwave as opposed to crisp pastry & accompanying ice ream was hardly scoop,
Very unfortunately I could not recommend this pub for evening meals & on that basis would not return.
Hall and woodhouse-the Quay poole
Went into the new Hall and woodhouse the quay in poole, excellent food, arrived fresh and quickly out waitor Tom was outstanding he is a credit to the team we were made to feel so welcome will definitely come again 😁
Hangleton Manor, Hove, Sussex.
Following the funeral of my late wife, I needed somewhere to host the family and friends for light refreshments. Hangleton Manor in Hove, Sussex were outstanding, providing a private room that was quiet and atmospheric and completely in tune with the occasion. The finger food supplied was really impressive, well presented and way beyond my expectations.
Many thanks for your great service at was, for me, a very difficult time.
Just wanted to say I was disappointed…
Just wanted to say I was disappointed in our visit today . 12 of us came for my daughter birthday and the service was very slow and not as I would expect
The drinks took 20 minutes to take the order to be taken was ages
We were not asked if the food was ok at any point. The sweets you gave out on the bill were rock hard.
The lemonade was flat
The waitress spilt the drink over me at one point so all in all not great
Demeaning policy treats those with food allergies as idiots
If you have any 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀, be very cautious about dining at H&W. My recent experience highlighted a policy that, while likely intended for safety, comes across as 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 and, frankly, 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲.
After carefully discussing my allergies with a helpful waiter and narrowing down the menu, I chose the last remaining option: fish and chips. When informed that the tartar sauce, 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘁, contained an allergen, I simply requested the meal to be served with the pot omitted. Easy, right?
Apparently not.
To my disbelief, the waiter returned with bad news. H&W policy dictated I could not be served the entire meal, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱, because the meal's full list of ingredients included one of my allergens.
The irony here is profound: a policy supposedly designed to protect customers actively prevented me from eating a meal that was 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, simply because a component 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 contained an allergen. As someone who has 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 managed my food allergies 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟲𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀, I felt completely 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 by this approach: H&W had apparently 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻 with 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆; I was allowed no say in the matter. This 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 left me feeling frustrated and angry and, as a result, I shall avoid returning to any H&W establishment. Further, it is my opinion that others with food allergies should similarly reconsider any intention of ordering food at an H&W restaurant; 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.
