Computer System and employees fail in doing math
M&T Bank's computer is failing in math, and their customer service has failed as well. I contacted M&T Bank because I overpaid in escrow, and they want to overcharge me when the mortgage is not in default. I brought this to the M&T representative Sierra's attention, asked to be transferred to a specialist, but she said there is nothing they can do and hung up on me.

Got a forbearance on my VA home loan because had major surgery. They were basically bullying me to pay even though I was recovering. When that didnât work they skipped a month of my forbearance but told me I was covered (I recorded the calls)then reported my payment late causing my credit score to drop 130 points.

Do NOT use them
When you use Zelle through M&T they consistently flag it as fraud, then tell you they canât tell you why itâs flagged as fraud, itâs an algorithm, and canât do anything about it. So you have no access to your money or to use Zelle when you need to. This has literally happened to me at least 10 times easily in months. So how do I know the algorithm isnât because of race age or something else? Zero help when you call in. Zero answers and zero professionalism and these are the people holding your money. Use a different bank. Honestly theyâre the worst.
Poor Customer Service
If I could give 0 stars I would. They took a whole monthly payment from me despite me providing them my bank statement that showed they were paid twice in one month. Horrible company, big bank taking advantage of its clients.

The worst bank EVER. I have POA over my son affairs and was trying to sell his house. I was expecting for the short sale to be completed within 3-6 months. Everything that was needed per their request was turned in. Even my buyer accepted their counteroffer and they still would not let us close. Finally almost a year later we just got the approval to close. On closing day, the bank tried to come back and say that would couldn't close 2 mins before closing. Luckily my attorney sent them back the letter that they sent that they gave us stating permission to close. We closed but the bank refused to pay the attorneys which they were supposed to and now I have to come up with money that I don't have. This bank is ridiculous. It took me through unnecessary hoops. Three different employees lied to us...
Their customer service lied and told us we'd have our refund processed and given the money on one day, then on that day, the story changed and they couldn't do anything but make us wait an extra 48 hours. They lied and said coming into the physical branch would let them help, only to be turned away, wasting our time and gas. Zero care, zero help, nothing but incompetence and greed. Worst bank we've ever used and will be closing our account immediately. Absolutely awful to their customers.

Tried to pay for my wedding venue and they flagged it as fraud stay going into the bank to let them know all the details ahead of time, this went on for 4 days and 2 bank managers and fraud team STILL couldn't figure out how to make the payment, again when trying to book a snorkeling trip after telling them ahead of time. I lost my entire booking, resort and plane tickets!
I can't even use Zelle to get paid from my cleaning job because it flags fraud! AND ZELLWLE COMES WITH MY BANK ACCOUNT and they STILL can't figure itout 3 years later.
They are helpless and absolutely so ridiculous with their fraud team that they can't even manage their own security.

Looonnngggg hold times
Long hold times and in one case, after a very long hold, I was just connected to a crying baby⊠I am 100% not joking, there was a baby crying in the background and no rep on the line. So joy only do I have to call back and go to the end of the line and start over, I am now haunted by the crying baby with no one to calm it on the other end. Not sure what kind of employee sweatshop M&T is running but I would avoid these clowns.

To be honest I didn't even know that bank existed until I had to go there to cash a check. Upon entering, I agreed the security guard with a "Good Morning". He looked at me like I'd killed his mother, without any reaction whatsoever. The cashier took too long to process the transaction, and when she was about to give me the money, she said: It has a five dollars fee. I said to her
"whatever". It is crazy. I go to PNC Bank or Wells Fargo all the time and never charge me anything for that. I hope I don't have to come back there. It was the location on Castor Avenue in Philadelphia.

Whatever you do - donât work at a call center in M&T bank. I canât tell you the experience as a Teller .. but donât work at their call center. You are guaranteed to become a shell of a person. It will mentally exhaust you in ways you didnât even think were possible. You will be micromanaged to a fine hair.. nothing you do will be right. They set you up for failure unless you operate like a robot. The tension of working here with the high demands of upper management will cause you to have extreme resentment towards the company & this will surely translate to your calls; you wonât want to deal with customers & their complaints, youâll lose your spark of being nice & using empathy. If you have mental health issues - this job will make it increasingly worse. Please do yourself a favor & never work for this atrocious company.

I went to the bank in Stroudsburg PA unfortunately and was treated horribly by the teller..I was trying to close my husband's account because he passed away suddenly on December 22,2025. I admit, at first, I have been on edge due to my husband's passing, not to mention, my 17 y.o. kitty also passed away the day before..I apologized for me being perhaps edgy but that made no difference..she showed zero empathy and had a terrible attitude, she kept me waiting. I had all the necessary paperwork, then she said she wanted to run it by her boss..who was having lunch in her office, she went in, I followed asking what the problem was..I had all the necessary paperwork..I just wanted to close the account..finally and still with an attitude she cut me a check for the amount to the estate of my husband..the teller's name is Jennifer..there was only one other teller and the manager who hides in her office..I have never sent in a bad review, but they were so so very rude..they should be fired..
The Oakfield M&T Bank
The Oakfield, NY M&T branch is in serious need of re-training and the need to understand Customer Service. The Tellers and Manager all have two speeds; Slow and Stop and they seems to be happy with that. Don't ever enter the bank thinking that it will be quick trip, even just to make a deposit, because they WILL NOT expedite the transactions and will blissfully ignore customers standing in line!
Holding my money hostage
Tried to spend my money. You blocked it and told me to call the fraud department IMMEDIATELY. I called immediately and I have been on hold for 1hr7min so far with no end in sight.
I will be going to my local branch and closing my account as soon as possible. I will also leave negative reviews on every possible outlet.

This is really great thing for some company and business that they can get one star. I wish we had negative stars. God is my witness from the second day i moved to US, I opened an account with this company (suggested from a friend smh) i had issues till the day I completely close my account. Believe me or not, I got scammed (not by company employees) through this bank, cost me over 2k. And they as usual, WE ARE REALLY SORRY. now UNFORTUNATELY, my mortgage went under their company, I had no power over it to stop it. And its been one year nightmare.
