I had a very poor experience learning with this driving school. My instructor, Mike Dawson, was unprofessional and often patronising. On several occasions he raised his voice and even grabbed the wheel during a lesson while swearing at me, which made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe.

I started lessons with him while living away at university, which meant I needed an instructor in the area of my studies rather than my hometown. Before starting lessons with him, I had already completed over 20 hours of professional instruction elsewhere, as well as more than 30 hours of supervised practice driving with a family member. This meant I already had a solid level of confidence and applied driving experience. Despite this foundation and paying for more than 30 hours of tuition with him (2-hour weekly sessions at £80 each), he insisted we start from scratch, yet key skills - particularly parking and manoeuvres, were rarely taught or revisited, even though I made it clear this was an area I found more challenging and wanted to improve.

I also want to add that a previous instructor I worked with had told me that a strong driving teacher should be able to build on a learner’s prior experience, continuing their progress rather than restarting basic content. He emphasised that effective instructors adapt to the student’s current ability level instead of teaching as though they are brand new to driving. Hearing this confirmed that my experience here did not reflect the standard an instructor should provide.

About four weeks before my test, he suddenly said he didn’t think I would be ready, even though we had already agreed on the test date. His solution was to double up lessons, meaning I would have had to pay for 4 hours per week instead of 2. For example, his typical “double lesson” often involved half the time driving on a straight road to Southport and back, rather than focusing on skill development. This came across as more of a money-making tactic than genuine teaching.

He also told me that if, in his view, I wasn’t ready a week before my test, he would not allow me to use his car. This created unnecessary pressure and made me worry that he could withdraw the vehicle at very short notice, leaving me without a car for my test.

Overall, I found his teaching style unprofessional, impatient, discouraging and money-driven. Although I have now passed my test, this was not because of his teaching. I insured a relative’s car and practiced with them, which is what gave me the experience and confidence to pass. In fact, I passed with only 2 minors and the examiner who passed me commented that I was an excellent driver. I would not recommend Mike Dawson at this driving school.

Passed first time at Southport thanks to Michael Kirwan, amazing instructor who is very patient and supportive throughout all the lessons and led me to pass with 0 faults, highly recommend!

My daughter has just passed her test first time with Michael Kirwan, he is reliable, patient and gave her clear instructions every lesson,
Working up to her test he was very supportive and guided her right to the point of passing.
I could not fault his work,
We have used Michael Kirwan 2 times now with our both children and I highly recommend, I honestly would not use no one else!

Passed my driving test first time at Norris Green with the help of Michael Kirwan, he has great knowledge, patience and is very optimistic and passionate about getting his learners to drive safely and by the book.

I did about 30-40 hours of lessons with him and each one I kept learning new things that helped me significantly during the test. I highly recommend him to anyone who’s wanting to pass faster. 5 stars!

I was with another instructor before changing to ooosh. I was an anxious driver during my lessons and never thought I would gain confidence or enjoy driving it felt very hopeless as I never felt like I progressed. Im so glad I changed instructors to Tony Crist I started to gain confidence and believe in myself. I passed first time and I'm so grateful. Thank you Tony!

I had Mike Kirwan as an instructor and I passed first time with him with no faults! I had been driving with another instructor and had failed a few tests. I lost all my confidence and was close to giving up but mike helped me build up my confidence and skill, I’m so thankful!

Mike kirwan was amazing hes has helped me pass my test 1st time and all I can do is say thank you and he was amazing and very understanding and explained all the steps to get me to pass

Unfortunately agree with another review on Google. Would not recommend Mike Kirwan due to the extremely tense atmosphere/negative comments that followed normal learner mistakes. Decided to find another instructor who helped to rebuild confidence.

Student indicated left then right at the very last minute in Southport earlier today. Preston New Road. Instructor then leans out of his window to gesticulate at me very aggressively. Concentrate on your student not other motorists.

It took me a year and a half to pass because I kept putting my tests off but Tony was patient with me, despite me being a horrendously anxious driver at the start but thanks to him I’m a lot more confident and comfortable driving by myself after passing with no faults, definitely recommend him to all :))

I'd highly recommend getting Mike to teach you how to drive, I was so nervous when starting to learn and that feeling of nerves went away so quick because Mike made me feel so comfortable so soon into my learning. He is so patient and encouraging, even when you make a mistake he calmly helps you readjust and explains fully what happened to ensure you understand your mistake. He is so friendly and such an amazing teacher. I'd have never thought I would pass first time when starting driving but having Mike as a driving instructor gave me the confidence and skills to pass first time. Many thanks to Mike, can't thank him enough for all the encouragements, and help he gave.

Just passed my test with 0 faults, I’ve had lessons with Terry from Oosh and can’t recommend him enough, brilliant teacher from start to finish and I really can’t thank him enough for all he has done for me!

Could not recommend Mike Dawson enough. After taking a break from driving whilst at university Mike made the process of learning again stress free and enjoyable and I'm grateful to him for that!

Absolutely fantastic experience learning to drive from Mike Dawson. Thorough, detailed teaching, breaking down processes into easy steps. I passed first time and would 100% recommend Mike to anyone looking to learn how to drive! 10/10.

Mike was SO patient with me and my learning… even with me not knowing my left and right😂 being dyslexic I was so nervous about finding an understanding instructor but he went above and beyond for my learning

With multiple lockdowns, I had to take a few big breaks from lessons, but he got me to pass my test first time!! I passed a confident driver and was confident I could drive independently

Mike is a great instructor. I had struggled with confidence and feeling comfortable when driving with previous instructors but Mike is able to explain things clearly and finally made driving make sense to me. He is also flexible and accommodating when scheduling lessons, which is very important as someone who works full-time. I passed my test after a few months of lessons with Mike.

Thie above review applies to Mike Dawson specifically, as unfortunately I also had an extremely negative experience with another instructor recommended by OOOSH.
