I emailed Meals on Wheels in LA - the valley I think - to ask for info. About two weeks went by and I didn't get a reply so I sent it again. I got a reply that said "info is in the automated email you received" I never got any email or reply of any kind so I replied to tell them that and never got a reply. Aholes.

1. These meals are mostly delicious and nutritious--an absolutely invaluable part of our health routine. My husband and I feel so grateful to be a part of this program. Even though it's run mostly by volunteers, the meal delivery system is extremely reliable and the food is excellent.
2. But the problem of too much sugar persists! The SB branch of Meals on Wheels, despite numerous requests to stop doing this, continues to put sweeteners on the vegetables they serve to vulnerable seniors–today it was sweetened squash and carrots.
The volunteers are wonderful. I can't say enough good things about them. The food ranges from delicious to barely edible--but it's a bargain and a godsend for us, especially compared to what most people are paying for similar meals.
BUT...they have a tendency to put sugar in items that don't require it. Today, for example, we were served three different kinds of vegetables and some kind of sweetener was in each one (carrots, corn, sweet potato). A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) provides evidence that people who ate the largest amounts of added sugar had the highest blood triglyceride levels and the lowest HDL (good) cholesterol levels. In 2023, the BMJ listed additional harms.
