We got the free trial when our dog was a puppy so decided to keep it going - I didn’t bother claiming the small amount for vet visits as it was a bit of a hassle, I was also annoyed that the put up the yearly subscription without telling me - just deducted from my card (claiming prices had risen) only their contribution to the claims has not risen!
Anyway I made my first claim when my dog was 4 years old and needed a knee patella operation - they paid their portion of the specialist fee and said they would not be paying anymore towards this operation! I was gob-smacked and upset as this was an absolute wrought I’d even go so far as to say it’s an absolute SCAM! I was warned by the specialist that they find any excuse not to pay out for an operation.
When I looked at my plan closely (the gold plan) the amount they pay for a patella op is $700 (less 25%) total they would pay $525 - the operation cost us $7,500 we were silly enough not to look closely at their contribution but it’s certainly not worth it. Do t waste your money on this pack of crooks - they don’t care about your pet and there is not a thing you can do when they refuse to pay out.

I have been with pet n sur for 8 years, the first 4 years I didn't need to make a claim. My dog was then diagnosed with hip dysplasia and I now have to make regular claims for ongoing treatment. They are extremely slow at dealing with claims, don't expect money in the bank for a few weeks. I have my other dog insured with a different company and the claim is sorted and paid into my account within a couple of days. I once had a large claim, almost $2000 and only received half of it as they take all your premiums up to the next anniversary, I didn't know about this and when questioned I was told "on the bright side you'll have no premiums to pay till June", not helpful when you're a grand short!

Like other reviews they hound you with follow up emails and phone calls, even after being told we had insured elsewhere! I actually blocked their number but after a few days silence ;as a result of the blocking I expect) they restarted calling from an ID withheld number.

Apart from securing very similar cover from a well regarded insurer, and for considerably less than Pet-n-Sur quoted me, I would not insure with them anyway given the downright annoying nature of their marketing/follow-up.

Unfortunately another tale of woe with this company. Happy to take your premiums, but if you have a significant claim, they leave you hanging. Don't trust them. Go with someone reputable.

Got free trial when i got my puppy off a breeder they called me asap to give me their sale speil prices ect i thanked them and said i would do my own research and get back to them if interested ,they continued to call me and email multiple times a day so i blocked them and yet they still call me from a random landline i didnt even have a chance to look up reviews or consider their prices they immediately gave me the ick!

Bad communication. Getting blood from a stone easier than a claim payout! Openly admitted my emails were going into the junk folder!

Petnsur were fantastic when our cat sadly passed away. They made closing the account and sorting final claims so easy during the distressing time. We still have our dog insured and have just insured our new kitten. We would always chose to have pet insurance and highly recommend Petnsur.

Really really bad. This company feels like a money grabber only. I would definitely NOT recommend.

I had a free puppy pet insurance with pet-n-sure nz. My puppy was sick from day 1 and I rang the company to find out if I was eligible to be covered by their insurance. I was told I was and to put in a claim which was emailed to me. I then received a email 3 days later to say basically I wasn't. I rang again spoke to the same person and he said he would speak to the manager and get back to me. No word came after that. I am very dissatisfied client who has been given wrong and conflicting information

I believe the 5 star reveiws are fake...
Pet n sur are only interested in taking your money, not paying claims. I was told on the phone that there was no time cut-off for making claims so I saved up claims over time, then a years worth were declined because they said they have a 6 month claim period.

I also rang up to add dental and told them I had been to the vet and that the Cat needed a teeth clean (no work or fillings needed just standard clean). I was advised over the phone that this would be fine to claim as long as I waited for 21 days before claiming. When I put through the claim they said that because it was a pre-existing issue (i.e the Cat needed the clean before the policy started, they would not cover it). They did not have any phone recordings and nothing of the above was added to the notes in my file so I could not prove the conversations that were had.

The policy also automatically renews yearly, they don't ask if you want to keep it and then you are locked in for a another year. Don't trust this company they are dodgy and dishonest.

I have insurance with other companies, AA, Westpac Insurance and Unimed and have NEVER had an issue.

I have had a few pets insured with Pet N Sur over the years. My first pet, who within only months of being insured accidentally broke his shoulder when dropped. That bill came to $8000! Unbelievable. But luckily the policy I had taken covered a decent chunk of it. No questions asked. And I was behind in my monthly payments. Talk about getting a lucky break.
I have two more dogs that are also insured now, and one needed surgery. I put a claim in which was declined. But fair enough, as it was a pre existing condition before cover was taken.
I’m just pleased that I have cover for future unfortunates. You hear some real expensive horror stories.
Maybe it’s the vets we should be grumpy at? How does a simple pin removal cost $800?

UPDATED TO TWO STARS:

After weeks of backwards and forwards and still not admitting they were wrong they have finally paid out in full so have to give them a big thank you for that. Still wouldn’t use them myself but you make up your own mind. I actually hope our experience may have improved things for others … lets hope so. Have a Happy Christmas all !!

We had free 42 days insurance here for our new kitten. 4 days after we got her we found a lump in her groin that turned out to be a hernia. Pet-n-sur refused to accept the word of our vet that it had occurred just before it was discovered and said it “could have” been caused when she was spayed 12 days earlier despite the spaying vet having examined her 6 days later. In the end they paid 50% as a goodwill gesture (not our idea of goodwill) and nothing would change their minds. The breeder has stopped using them (approx 50 kittens a year) and everyone involved will be telling everyone we can that they can’t be trusted. Go elsewhere fast and don’t look back, their claims department is diabolical !!

Terrible service absolutely no communication unless you hassle them. Good luck trying to get a payment and they automatically renew your contract for an entire year if you don't remember to call them and cancel in time. They do not send out any communications to ask if they can they just do it . Don't believe me about the service check this out. This poor women was made to pay for a pet that was DEAD - Google stuff news - paying premiums on your dead dog

When I needed the help for my baby a few years back I got it and never had any further problems so when she died and I got another baby this time a rescued cat I just went with the flow and got Pet n sur again . I have had no problems with either ...so far 😊

I have done my research and Petnsur is 100% NZ owned. I am going to run with them for my cat insurance. Staff were knowledgeable and not pushy. I have no complaints so will give them a go.

I am convinced the 5 star reviews for this company are fake because they couldn't be more different from our experience. Their customer service is terrible. They happily took our money for years but refused to pay out when we needed them. They lock you into their direct debit and wont let you cancel...it's a scam and a racket. This company should be on fair go. I'd give them less than one star if I could.

1st claim
Have had Pet N Sur for several years and not claimed previously so had to supply ALL past (pet) medical history ( a pain for me as I have moved throughout North Island ,BUT-fair enough, they needed to know all details and this is normal for human insurance as well).
Regular updates from Pet N Sur throughout process, and claim paid out quickly once all requested info supplied..... :)

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - PETNSUR ARE EXTORTIONISTS!! Stay away from these underhanded thieves. They will happily take your direct debit but, when it comes to a claim they will find every excuse or loop hole not to pay. I took out a policy 7 months ago and when I wanted to make my first claim they said I never signed my policy so I could not claim. When I asked to cancel they said I was tied into it for 1 year bearing in mind I did not sign my policy. I was told I only need to pay 30% excess but, when I claimed I was told it’s $60 or 30% whichever is greater. The average vet bill being $80 I only received a $20 reimbursement and you have to wait 7-21 days to get your money reimbursed.
Claims department is a rude bunch of hoodlums, phones ring out and their Retention Manager is an argumentative fool. Customer service is shocking and they literally don’t care if you are unhappy. Their disclaimer ‘it’s not our fault you did not read your policy!’ The policy they make sure they never send you.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THEM!!!!!
We started our policy with them, paid all premiums on time and after 5 months had a first claim... Of Course!!!, here is when the true colors show up... They tell you that its only now that they are assessing the eligibility for your dog for any claim??? So here is the thing, I could be paying for my policy and premiums while not even be ELIGIBLE for a claim to begin with???? Could you believe that? It's now that they are asking for all previous history, so no history = no claim! WHILE I KEEP PAYING THOUGH.... don't you think you should have done that at the beginning when signing up? didn't here that... give me one good reason why I should keep paying ????
STAY AWAY!!!! My advice, put some money aside for your loved ones...
Furthermore, the service is of poor quality... However their sales... hmmmm.... Awesome and great speakers!!!! what a Shame!

Our Maggie was rushed to the Vets with a bowel problem. Many thanks to Kapiti Care Vets who saw her straight away. They made sure we had all the correct paperwork for our claim.
Extremely pleased with how quickly our claim was processed.
Great outcome all round as Maggie is back to her happy self.
