I have had nothing but problems with my Pit Boss Austin XL. Parts continuously break down shipping is slow or delayed constantly customer service reps especially Christian are rude and unprofessional. Do not buy this product it is the worst thing I've ever purchased in my life. Pit Boss is a terrible company and the only reason I left one star is because I can't leave negative Stars. I have had this grill for almost 5 years maybe 10 times due to the fact that it does not work right and they will not replace it they just keep sending parts and biting their time until my warranty runs out. My Pit Boss Vertical grill, the PBV4PS2, is absolutely Trash!!!!!
My wife and I purchased this grill during the summer of 2022, and it served us well for the first two years of use. However, during a family gathering, I had to grill 12 slabs of ribs, but the grill couldnât maintain the desired cooking temperature. Thankfully, my dad had another grill, but we could only put six slabs on it at a time, which significantly slowed down the cooking process. The primary reason we bought the smoker was to have a grill that could accommodate more food.
I contacted the Pit Boss support team (aka The Parts Store), and they diagnosed an issue with the control board. They promptly shipped me a replacement, which was relatively straightforward to install. I thought we were all set, but unfortunately, the problem persisted. The next time I tried using the grill, it kept displaying an error and wouldnât regain its temperature.
The support team instructed me to open the smokerâs door to fix the ignitor, which ultimately led to its failure later. I found myself once again wasting my precious time repairing the smoker instead of cooking. At this point, I feel like Iâm dealing with a used car that keeps breaking down (a certified lemon).
Replacing the ignitor was more challenging. I followed every step outlined in the Pit Boss video on YouTube, but the rep informed me that the video was outdated. She suggested that I should have hand-tightened the screw for the ignitor instead of screwing it in with a screwdriver.
I feel like Iâve become an expert on repairing Pit Boss grills, and I wish they would offer me a job lol. Iâm not the only one experiencing issues with this particular grill. After cooking on it when I bought it, I recommended it to my family and friends, who also purchased the smoker. Unfortunately, theyâre having the same problems.
So, if youâre considering buying this vertical grill, I strongly advise you to do your research. Pit Boss, this grill is great for a couple of years, but after that, it starts to malfunction. Iâm sure many people are like my friends, pushing their Vertical PBV4PS2 grills to the curb versus having to be sent parts to repair it themselves.

I am completely devastated about my pitboss smoker and how we have not been able to use it (except 1 time) when we bought it. I need someone to reach out to me ASAP regarding this issue. I have a timeline below of everything that has occurred. This is absolutely unacceptable. I have taken every single measure that support has done and STILL MY SMOKER DOESNâT WORK.
- Purchased âBlack Fridayâ
- Was only able to use the smoke 1 time before it stopped working.
- Directions informed us ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RETURN PITBOSS TO WHERE YOU BOUGHT ITâŠ.REACH OUT TO PITBOSS DIRECTLY WITH ANY ISSUES.
- We would have returned it to Walmart if we werenât instructed to not do that.
- Reached out to pitboss to trouble shoot why our smoker wasnât working. On 5/13/25 they shipped us a new âControl Board â PB Vertical, 110VAC 3MP 4 Series (122) to fix the issue.
o Control board was delivered on 5/21/25 NO INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED.
o Had to reach back out to pitboss to have them email me directions on how to install control board.
- After we installed âNew Control Boardâ smoker STILL NOT WORKING.
- Reached back out to pitboss AGAIN and on 5/29/25 they instructed us to âCheck the connection from the (FAN) to the control boardâ. And they told me to then reach back out if that doesnât work.
- On 6/2/25 reach back out AGAIN to pitboss support and on video chat showed that we are still getting âErLâ code.
- On 6/2/25 they shipped a new âFan â Combustion/Convection â PB Seriesâ fan to us.
- On 6/16/25 â New Fan was delivered â AGAIN WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!!!!!
- Reached back out to support to get instructions on how to install new fan.
- AGAIN â SMOKER STILL ISNâT WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!
- Reached back out AGAIN to support to show the ErL code.
- They now shipped us a new âIgniter â PB Seriesâ part on 7/7/25.
- Igniter â PB Series was delivered on 7/14/25 â AGAIN WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!
- We installed the new part and STILL GETTING THE ErL Code!
- We are not technicians that should have to keep installing new parts for a smoker that clearly just doesnât work.
- Since we were instructed to NOT RETURN IT TO WALMART â we are now outside of the standard Walmart return policy of 90 days and our smoker STILL DOESNâT WORK.
- Talked to customer service AGAIN who wanted me to do something else to try and fix it. I asked to speak with a supervisor who was "monitoring" the call who then "magically" wasn't able to talk to me and assured a call back from Shelly. I never received a call back. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE
They sent me a smaller cover than I ordered
I ordered a size 820 pit boss grill cover, and I received a 800 size. There is a size difference and price difference from what I ordered. I called customer care and the man I spoke to kept insisting that was the cover I ordered and he wouldn't give any explanation for the size difference. They sent me something other than what I paid for and there was no effort to resolve the issue on their end.
Poor customer service
Purchased a Pit Boss 1250 smoker today at Menards. When we opened the box the lid was all scratched. In the assembly instructions it says any issues with the smoker contact pit boss which we did. They told us since it was only cosmetic they would not replace anything or assist us in any manner. Since there were quite a few large scratches we were not happy with this response. First time dealing with Pit Boss and so disappointed. Probably should have read reviews before purchase. Thankfully Menards is going to help us swap out the lid. Kudos to Menards.
I have owned two pitboss grills
I have owned two pitboss grills. Both were registered. The control boards on both went out within 2 seasons. When I called to get new control boards, their customer service department did nothing to help. They wanted to charge 135 dollars for a new one. This will be the last one I will ever purchase.

I purchased a cabinet smoker for around $500 in August, 2024. In November, the ignition stopped working. After calling PitBoss, they sent me a replacement ignition switch with instructions on how to change the part.
I was unable to get to the switch, as it appears to be on the bottom somewhere under all the coverings. I stripped several screws trying to access the switch. I finally threw my hands up and said this is impossible! I called back, letting them know the problem I was having and they said I have to go back to Loweâs for additional support or request a return authorization.
I spent a great deal of time with Loweâs trying to get a return authorization, but PitBoss never cared to respond to the managerâs request.
*BUYER BE-WAREâ!! PITBOSS HAS A âLIMITEDâ WARRANTY THAT ONLY COVERS PARTS! THEY WILL NOT REPARE OR REPLACE THE UNIT FOR YOU!
If you want a smoker, but also want quality service and a REAL warranty, shop Traeger!

Donât waste your money
Well, after reading couple of reviews, it seems like everybody has the same issue buying a grill from Walmart and the grill was pretty much falling apart within a year and a half, this is a worthlessâŠ.
$600-$700 grill that I would not last in less than a year. It will be damaged they use cheap material and everything gets rusted pretty much in less than a year. Donât waste your moneyâŠâŠ

Would give 0/5 stars if I could, bought an onyx Austin XL at Walmart. Took about 3-4 hrs to set up when the instructions said 45 mins. The parts werenât really aligning well, but still managed to put it together. Come to find out there is a crack in the weld on the side of the barrel. Makes it useless. Pit boss would not make it right instead they said I would have to take it back to the store. The grate in the middle came broke as well, would not recommend this company at all.

This is now the SECOND PitBoss smoker that has crapped the bed. I got a PB Sportsman. Vertical smoker 2 years ago and after one season the auger completely shut down. Ended up selling that one to a buddy who likes to fix things up. I made the stupid mistake last June to get another PB Copperhead Vertical Smoker. We were extremely diligent with this one, cleaning it after ever use, keeping it covered between uses, and storing it in a heated garage. Went to go use it last weekend and once again all the pellets had turned to mush and locked up in the auger shoot. I just spent over 500 dollars on this one so I called their 800 number for assistance and before I was done explaining I was rudely cut off and said âthis is a you problem, not a PB problemâ. No joke, those are her EXACT words, I told her this smoker had been very well taken care of and she continued to tell me it was user error. She told me that with high humidity it can affect the pellets, to which I said, I live in northern Minnesota, we barely have humidity. She then said if it wasnât covered properly, which I said it was cleaned and covered after every use. She then went with the outdoor elements, which again I informed her unless it was in use, it was covered in a heated garage. So finally she said if you donât removed all the pellets after each use this can happen!?!? So wtf in then point of putting such a large protected hopper on it, and where in the directions does it say to empty out the pellets after EVERY SINGLE USE. Even if I wanted to take the time to try and fix this, I have to pay for all the replacement parts (even though itâs technically still under warranty). I am telling you right now, I read reviews and thought âoh they are just overreacting or they did something wrongâ PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, do yourself a favor and walk away from these terrible smokers and even worse customer service!
Pitbull grills does not stand behind his product
off the phone with a rep from Pit Boss grills. He wanted to send a heating element for me to replace it in a smoker that was used once. It doesn't heat up. The drip pan does not come out. And I told him I was not comfortable doing that due to fire, explosion, etc. He said for me to take it back to tractor supply. It says on the sheet do not take back to the store and yet he says to do that. He wants me to to fix it myself and I said please send somebody out here to do it they said no. So I want a whole new unit that's already put together.i asked his boss, man would not give his name, he said the same thing, back to the store. I have to find a truck to take it back I borrowed a truck to get it to my house. I'm getting the round and round for this for an item that cost over $400. Either sending my money or send me a replacement. They have my name and phone number and a smoker product serial number everything on the file that you just created not 10 minutes ago. This is ridiculous that they think I could install it myself with safety issues. And if I do that and something were to happen I will have my wife sue. Nach kurzer Suche habe ich den Fehler gefunden. Der Motor fÌr die Förderschnecke hat ein LÌfterrad, das kurz anlÀuft und dann stoppt.
Nach ein Paar Versuchen war klar warum
Der komplette Förderschnecken Motor ist nicht fixiert. LÀuft der LÌfter an - bewegt er sich und hebt teilweise ein paar Millimeter ab.
Festgestellt - das die Verbindungsschrauben zur Schnecke nicht fest ist.
Das festziehen brachte keine Besserung.
Reklamation an Pit Boss.
Nach ca 30 Minuten Antwort.
Sie "fertigen " eine Halterung und senden mir diese
Dabei ein 8 seitiges PDF incl Bilder , wie das Teil dann einzubauen ist.
Das Problem ist also bekannt !!!!
Inzwischen das Teil erhalten.
Leider ist es sichtlich nicht genau fÃŒr meinen Grill.
Es lieà sich erst Montieren nachdem ich die Schraube mit der Erdung versetzt habe.
Der Grill lÀuft nun .
Bleibt jedoch immer mal wieder mit Error Förderschnecke stehen.
Als EntschÀdigung habe ich von Pit Boss allen Ernstes 2 USB LadegerÀte ????? Erhalten ...

Disappointed
I purchased the Sportsmans smoker and grill combo. From the beginning, the smoker dries the meat out. Gives you a nice smoke ring and smoke flavor but leaves the meats dry and hard. It does not matter what method you use same results. Smoke at 225 remove and wrap when temp is correct finish smoking and rest. Injection does not help, tray of water in the smoker makes no difference. Smoker seems to be to hot and to dry, friends have similar issues.
Will be purchasing a new smoker/ bar-bq shortly. Ruined quite a few nice Briskets, I'm done.
