I left Reliant after abominable customer service. I went with John The Plumber in Ottawa and found them to give excellent customer and installation service. I was so happy with them I BOUGHT my own hot water tank. I highly recommend this second company and have told all the condo members to switch away from Reliant for the reason mentioned above.

I have paid my bill on time for the 5 years I have been a customer!! Recently, they sent a cutoff notice saying I was 2 days late, even though I know I paid the bill on time, and have for the last five years. When I changed companies because of this, they decided that I owed them an extra $400.00 as an early termination fee. If I could give them zero stars, I would. If you are in the market for an energy company, this would be the very last company I would consider. They are HORRIBLE!!!
Horrible customer service
Horrible customer service. Do not enter into a contract with this company. They are not the cheapest, and their billing practices are extremely concerning.
I enrolled in automatic payments with a credit card on file. When my card was replaced due to fraudulent activity, the automatic payment was understandably not processed. After receiving notice, I promptly provided my updated card information and was assured that the reconnection and late fees would be removed.
Despite this, I later received another email stating that my service had been disconnected again for nonpayment. I then discovered that my automatic payment setup had been canceled without my knowledge, resulting in additional charges, reconnection fees, and late fees.
To make matters worse, I learned that my contract had been extended to 5 years, even though I had originally understood and agreed to a 2-year term.
This has been a frustrating and disappointing experience. I strongly caution others to carefully review their contract terms and billing arrangements before signing up. I had a terrible experience with this company's customer service and highly discourage anyone from entering into a contract with them. They are not the lowest-priced option, and their billing practices raise significant concerns.
Run away from this company
I had a terrible experience with Reliant Energy involving massive, inaccurate charges for vacant properties and extremely poor dispute handling.
Reliant billed nearly $900 in one month for two properties that were completely vacant, with no occupants and no appliances. When I formally disputed the charges and requested a meter investigation, Reliant refused to initiate one, claiming it had to be handled by Oncorâdespite Reliant being the retail provider responsible for coordinating billing investigations.
Instead of investigating, Reliant simply sent generic âconsumption reportsâ and reported the disputed balance to credit bureaus, damaging my credit while the dispute was still unresolved. There was no explanation for how thousands of kWh could be consumed in empty homes, no verification of meter assignment, and no effort to resolve the issue fairly.
Customer service responses were dismissive and deflective, and I was forced to escalate the matter to the Public Utility Commission of Texas and credit bureaus just to protect myself.
If you value accurate billing, proper dispute resolution, and responsible credit reporting, be extremely cautious with Reliant Energy. This has been one of the most frustrating utility experiences Iâve ever dealt with.
Deceptive Business Practices
Nothing is wrong with the service they have provided me since 2022 except I was put in a 4 yr without truly knowing how long it was. My complaint is their deceptive business practices. They have been mailing (possibly emailing also) me for a couple of months notices now of picking a new plan. I thought that meant my contract was up and I wanted to switch rather than try to figure out their "plans" so I switched. Today I get a bill in the mail for an early cancellation fee of $395. I can NOT pay that. I called and they won't do anything about it unless I have them reinstate my service which would also mean I have to pay a cancellation fee to the new provider. I understand it is my fault for not confirming the end of the plan with them but they never should have been offering new plans to me either since mine wasn't over. Now I find out the contract isn't over until June 2026! Why have they been offering me new plans since Nov! That's the deception. They CAN waive the fee, they just won't; I do NOT have this kind of money. I've been a loyal and prompt customer for almost 4 yrs (length of the contract ending in June). I will let it go to collections if they won't remove it. $395 is extremely exorbitant and just a ridiculous money grab from people who struggle to make ends meet.

Horrendous energy provider in my humblest of opinions. From the outrageous surplus fees, outrageous pricing, to the horrible customer service; Reliant is hands down the worst of the worst in the state of Texas. Genuinely no reason to ever do business with reliant. You always get better pricing, better deals, and more considerate customer service literally anywhere else. Just recently I had a payment arrangement setup with reliant, paid the amount they stated at the location they stated at the time they stated. They still disconnected my energy anyway on said day, completely disregarded and did not honor their end of the deal at all, but took the last bit of funds I had which could have at least went towards providing for my family had I been aware Reliant would blatantly go back on their word and betray our agreement regardless. I had the receipt, and the call was recorded. But the reliant supervisor I was speaking with such a grossly inconsiderate demeanor as if my concerns meant absolutely nothing, leaving me and my family at risk during the freeze with a toddler in the house. I have all my evidence detailed and recorded, as did Reliant have evidence of the agreement we made. They didn't care, and I currently taking them to small claims court, and reported them to the public utilities commission, and to the better business bureau. If I can help anyone go through the experience I've went through dealing with reliant, I always will. Do not do business with this company, save yourself the time, money, energy, and headache.

I was approached by a representative in a Walmart.
I was promised that if I switched from my current company which was Cirro that my plan would be much cheaper with a lower kilowatt hour charge.
I was also promised that they would pay any cancellation fees that would be incurred by Cirro.
All of this was an absolute lie.
I have been using reliant for 3 months and consistently my bill is $100 to $150 more then what I was paying through Cirro (keep in mind I'm also comparing months to months from the previous year.)
Also, they did not reimburse me for any sort of fees incurred by Cirro for early cancellation.
I live in a 1500 square foot home with myself and two children. We are hardly ever home and don't run the AC very much at all.
To receive a $300 bill for a single month is absolutely absurd.
I was lied to in many aspects.
Do not use this company.
DO NOT.
They have aggressive sale tactics. Usually anyone who has to try it that hard for your business has something to hide up their sleeve.

I had a very disappointing experience with Reliant Energy. I signed up through a sales representative inside Walmart on 12- 01-2023, and we agreed that my service would start only after my previous electricity contract ended. However, Reliant did not keep this promise, and because of that, my previous provider charged me a cancellation fee.
After several phone calls with the sales representative, I was repeatedly promised that I would be reimbursed for this fee. I followed all instructions and submitted what they asked for, but nothing was ever resolved.
On top of that, the representative charged me $80 upfront without clearly explaining that it was non-refundable. Overall, the experience felt misleading, the communication was poor, and the promises made during signup were not honored. Based on my experience, I do not recommend Reliant Energy.

Reliant.com has been the worst service provider I have ever dealt with. I requested electricity service for my apartment in Midtown, Houston, TX in September 2025. Initially, they entered my address incorrectly. When I asked them to correct it, instead of fixing the existing service, they created a new account with the corrected apartment number and charged me twice â once for the original request and again for the so-called correction.
When I reached out to their customer service via web chat, the representatives appeared completely unprepared and unable (or unwilling) to understand my issue. As a business professional who travels frequently, I rely on autopay billing to save time. I only stay in the US for about 60 days at a time before traveling back to China, so efficient service is extremely important to me.
On October 4, 2025, I again contacted their web chat support, but my issue still remains unresolved. Based on this experience, I would never recommend Reliant.com to anyone who values their time and expects reliable service.
Scam
Scam, the sales agents in Wal-Mart took advantage of a mentally challenged young man. My son has autism, and he reside in a state group home. There is no need for him to have any service in his name. Also talking to you, you know automatically he is incapable to understand things. He was signed up for service, his social worker helped make call to stop service but they still want to charge him a cancelation fee. I his mother and representative payee called and spoke to a supervisor and was given a fake email address emailCIMSSupport at energy dot com to send documents to and if I do not get the account switched in my name or someone else name they will keep this on his record and still charge him. I do not want or need their services. I had googled the email address and found that The email address CIMSSupport at energy-dot-com is likely a phishing scam and not a legitimate contact for a company or government agency. Stay Away from Reliant!
Stay Away from Reliant! They're horrible. I was with Pulse Power previously and was force pushed to Reliant. I was told that everything on my bill stays as is and nothing changes until the contract ends. But I see some new charge "Gross Receipts Tax Reimbursement" charge from Reliant that was never charged by Pulse Power. Reliant mentioned that they always have that charge and will not be waived. I requested cancellation of my contract with Reliant and I wouldn't want to continue with Reliant, but they mentioned that I need to pay about $400 in early termination fees. I was helpless and I couldn't do much, so stayed with them.
I noticed drastic usage changes after moving to reliant and noticed that my bills started going crazy higher; so I contacted Reliant requesting to switch my plan to Free Nights plan; but they mentioned that I will have to pay the ETF $300 to switch to that plan; so weird why I would pay ETF when I am planning to move to a different plan with the same provider.
After all this, I thought it does not makes sense to even be with Reliant especially with such horrible customer service and tried have a conversation for the final time with an agent to see if they can waive my ETF or at least give me a reduction in the ETF and they said no. So, I moved to a different provider and was ready to pay an ETF.
I was then called back by an agent from Reliant asking for feedback and I provided them the feedback about their reps asked me to pay ETF to change to a different plan with the same provider. That rep said that she is sorry to hear that and mentioned that it would not have happened that way, if I would have spoken to a supervisor and asked if i can switch back and stay with them and they can waive the ETF to move to the plan that I requested. I informed her that I didn't want to come back especially due to the horrible customer service, additional charges, miscommunication, etc from Reliant. But, I mentioned that I can give them a try in future, provided they take care of my ETF (waive completely or partial). She mentioned that she will discuss with a supervisor about my experience and will have then call back and help with my ETF (partially if not full).
I haven't heard back from them again and I called customer service asking if they have any update on this and the response was, there is no way to waive or reduce ETF once you moved out to a different provider. I asked them what is the use for the feedback and the rep mentioned that she is not at all happy with the way this was taken care and promised me to talk to the supervisor and said will take care of the ETF (partial if not full). And this agent says, it is just a feedback call. So, what does feedback mean? It is just to waste customer's time? All I can say is; Reliant is a ripoff, will avoid them for life and will let my friends and family know about my experience with them and will ensure that everyone that I know of stays away from them. RIP Reliant Energy!

They will reward those that turn down their thermostats in the Texas summer, but for someone like me that already keeps the thermostat higher they donât care. At this time in the morning my thermostat is at 82f, and around 12pm I move it down to 81f. Around 2pm it goes to 80f and usually stays there all night. I called in a while back and asked if I would get a discount because they had a program turn your thermostat up 4 degrees, I believe, and you would get somethingâŠI forget what it wasâŠI just received an email saying reduce electricity and get to earn bill creditsâŠPunish those that donât run their ac a lot and reward those that do, but will turn it up.. They sent me a letter about renewing my Astros Plan which got me a gift card and an autograph session once a year, in the letter it states "to continue getting your benefits, sign up" NO WHERE IN THE LETTER DOES IT STATE, that by signing up for a 3 year contract, your benefits go from every year to 1 time only. The only thing cust. service says is its on the contract. I told her that it's a bait and switch since the letter states something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the contract. She was happy to waive the cancelation fee so I would go away. I was a customer for 27 years!!! I Never made a late payment or missed a payment. RELIANT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO LOYALTY TO IT'S CUSTOMERS.
