Not built for running a real marketplace

I’ve run a real marketplace on Sharetribe, not a demo or side project, and my experience has been consistent: it looks fine at launch, but it breaks down once you’re actually operating a marketplace with real users and real money.

At the start, it feels easy. You can get something live quickly, which is appealing. But once you’re dealing with approvals, moderation, payments, disputes, and use cases, the gaps in the product become very obvious.

Listings and content management are extremely basic. You can’t upload multiple images at once and you can’t reorder images at all. There’s no drag and drop. Videos aren’t supported, so if you want video you’re told to host it on Youtube and paste a link, which then sits separately from the photos. The CMS is markdown-only, with no proper WYSIWYG editor, no sensible page structure, and no bulk actions. Managing content quickly becomes frustrating.

Forms are another major issue. You can’t properly control what users enter. Required fields, formats, ranges, and validation are unreliable or missing. Most fields are just free-text boxes, which leads to messy, inconsistent data that’s hard to work with.

There’s also no real logic in the system. You can’t create conditional fields or proper workflows. As soon as your setup becomes even slightly complex, it’s considered out of scope and you’re pushed toward workarounds, external tools, or developers.

Payments are rigid. You’re essentially locked into Stripe. You can’t issue partial refunds from the admin. If an order is cancelled or refunded, the marketplace loses its commission and fees making it a negative transaction. Commission structures are flat and inflexible.

Admin control over listings is one of the biggest problems. A listing can be approved based on specific information, and then the seller can edit important details after approval. There’s no way to lock fields and no visibility for the admin. For any moderated marketplace, this makes the approval process meaningless.

Conversation and transaction handling is also messy. Messaging a seller again from a listing can create a new conversation that the system treats as a separate transaction. This fragments message history, inflates transaction counts, and makes admin records confusing. There are also no proper logs, which makes audits difficult or impossible.

Moderation tools are extremely limited. You can’t temporarily suspend users or put them under review. It’s basically all or nothing. Worse, even if you ban a user, messages they’ve already sent are still delivered via email notifications. For example, someone can send their phone number through messages, the recipient receives it by email, and banning the sender afterwards does nothing. There’s no way to retract or prevent this.

Admin and reporting tools are weak. There are no bulk actions, filtered data can’t be exported, sorting doesn't exist, and there’s no real analytics. You end up relying on spreadsheets and manual tracking, or pay third party tools.

Zapier ends up being mandatory. A lot of basic functionality is pushed into automations. If you don’t want to rely on that or want something more flexible, the answer is to upgrade and hire developers. You end up paying for Sharetribe, then other tools, and then developers just to make things work.

If you’re experimenting or building something very simple, Sharetribe might be fine. If you’re running a real marketplace with real users, real money, and real responsibility, it becomes an expensive and frustrating mistake.

Sharetribe CEO Juho here. Thanks for leaving your review. You are spot on in listing many of the gaps that exist in our product today. There are many features we want to add, and we’re continuously improving the product. Feedback like yours helps us direct our efforts, so I genuinely appreciate it.

I very much agree with you that our no-code marketplace builder is today not sufficient for running a large-scale marketplace operation. The purpose of our no-code offering is to allow you to validate your marketplace idea quickly and affordably, before investing in custom development.

Before the release of our current no-code offering, the underlying product it was built on was meant only for developers, with the value proposition of building and running a completely unique marketplace for 10% of the time and cost compared to building it from scratch and running it with your own DevOps team. Today, we have many successful customers running marketplaces with real users and real money on our no-code offering. However, we still expect that eventually, every serious scaling marketplace running on Sharetribe will require customizing with code. We have lots of large customers, with hundreds of thousands of users, millions in processed payments, and millions in funding raised. They are all using our developer platform heavily.

Marketplace businesses can eventually become quite complex and they are also all different, and I don't see any no-code tool ever managing to cover all of their needs as they scale. In most cases, as the marketplace grows to scale, you will hit the limits of no-code, no matter which no-code solution you use, so at Sharetribe, we've tried to make the transition from no-code to custom development as smooth as possible.

The above is the core of our product vision, based on what we've learned from building both no-code solutions and developer solutions for marketplaces for 10+ years. It's also why we have deprioritized many of the features you listed in our no-code builder. All of them are certainly useful, and running a larger marketplace without them can feel painful. However, in most cases, they are not essential for the initial validation stage. Our focus has been on helping founders get past that stage quickly by ensuring they have all the essential features they need at the very beginning, and after that, making the process of scaling their growing business through custom development as seamless as possible through excellent developer tooling.

That being said, I would absolutely love to have most of the features you listed available in our product today, and some of them are already on our roadmap. We still have plenty of work to do!

Good but basic

A great option if your needs are extremely basic. Not really suitable for international marketplaces though. Transactions on my marketplace go through multiple currency conversions before the money finally hits my account, so I lose about 25% of every sale in currency conversion and fees. Very annoying. Their customer support is very responsive but for major issues like this they can't/don't help.

Sharetribe are outstanding

As a non coder - with an idea for an online marketplace - I searched high and low for an answer. I tried paying people on fiverr & upwork - wasting thousands of dollars - i tried simple wordpress and other sites "in a box", i learned basic coding and played with bubble softrr n zapier n others. Sharetribe is hands down the best solution to get a marketplace up n running. Whenever I've had a problem the team at Sharetribe have always responded, quickly with professionalism and courtesy - best of all they always solved the issue. I genuinely cant recommend them enough. The have a new version of their platform now - & while we're still on "go" we will transition to this soon. I should add we are just a small biz - but I've spoken with a friend of friend who has a thriving biz on sharetribe and they have been able
to scale with the biz n platform. Use who you will - but if you're on trustpilot to check their legit - they are : )

5-star support and features release

The no-code option seemed a bit limited at first, but it's actually pretty solid if you take some time to figure out how the platform works (the help center is super comprehensive) and hook up with Zapier. Sharetribe's support has been awesome all along: they walked us through the basics when we started, connected us with Sharetribe Experts when we considered going dev-mode, and gave us more insights when we decided to stick with no-code.

What really stands out for us in giving them a 5-star review? The people. Seriously, their support is top-notch. When you reach out to Sharetribe, you're talking to real folks, not some automated response with links to random articles. They actually take the time to understand what you're dealing with and give you straightforward explanations, plus smart suggestions. YES! Thank you, really.

Plus, just after about a month of building our marketplace, they introduced a new feature that goes exactly in the direction of what we needed. That kind of proactive approach makes us really confident that Sharetribe will keep evolving to fit our needs—just what you want in a business partner.

My honest experience with sharetribe.

My honest experience with sharetribe.
Firstly after only a few days we suddenly realised if you need to do anything from simple domain configuration to anything at all related to simple customisation even adding badges or anything you will pay more and i mean a lot more. You are better off in our opinion building a site yourself for 2 to 5k after only 1 year it would have cost you at least 3k with sharetribe based on there base plan that they require you to sign to have your own domain name. Then it gets WORSE a lot worse they have lost half od our hard work all data see below there email and my response and no hello at the beginning just a CHEERS at the end arrogance.
The changes in your Live marketplace have been overridden with a content copy operation from test to live at 2024-04-08T16:08:22.557Z. This content copy was triggered when you pressed the "Copy changes to Live" button in your test environment.

Unfortunately, we can't restore the data when the admin user has performed it. To prevent similar issues in the future, we strongly recommend reviewing the changes you want to update and only selecting changes you are willing to override in your Live environment.

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction and frustration regarding the recent incident concerning the Live marketplace changes. It has come to my attention that a content copy operation was executed from the test environment to the Live environment on April 8th, 2024, at 16:08:22.557Z, without any warning or indication of potential data loss.
First and foremost, I must emphasize my disbelief and utter disappointment in the lack of consideration for our valuable data. The fact that there was no prior message or notification alerting users that their data might be lost during the content copy operation is simply unacceptable. As a user, I expect transparency and accountability from your team, neither of which was demonstrated in this instance.

Furthermore, the statement that "we can't restore the data when the admin user has performed it" is utterly baffling. It implies a complete disregard for the integrity of the data and a lack of contingency plans for such situations. It is inconceivable that a platform of your stature does not have measures in place to prevent irreversible data loss caused by user actions. This negligence reflects poorly on your professionalism and competence in managing sensitive information.

I find it deeply concerning that the responsibility is shifted onto the users to prevent similar incidents in the future. While I understand the importance of reviewing changes before updating them in the Live environment, it is ultimately your responsibility as the service provider to implement safeguards and procedures to prevent such catastrophic errors.

I demand immediate action to rectify this situation and ensure that adequate measures are put in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Additionally, I expect a formal apology and an explanation detailing the steps you will take to regain our trust and prevent further data loss incidents.

Please consider this letter as a formal complaint and a request for urgent resolution of this matter. I await your prompt response and assurances that steps will be taken to address these concerns and prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

Our approach to building marketplaces is that there's a certain set of features available without coding, but if you want a specific unique feature that is not available out of the box, it's possible for you to add it with custom code. I do understand that this can be frustrating sometimes, as sometimes there might be just one feature you really need that is missing, and getting that one feature built ends up costing more than building the rest of you rmarketplace. We're constantly improving our no-code builder and adding new capabilities to it, and hopefully we'll eventually reach a point where most of the features our customers need early on will be available without coding.

I'm deeply sorry that you had to experience such a data loss. The reason for that was that each Sharetribe account has multiple "environments" (one for live marketplace, one for testing, and one for development), and you can move data between them, which sometimes can mean data from one environment gets overwritten with data from another, and in some cases, it's not possible to retrieve the data that is lost. We've done our best to put in place several safeguards and notifications that nudge you towards the best workflow and warn you about potential data loss when doing these operations (when doing the copy operations, we do show you a warning notification saying that your data will get overridden and this action can't be undone), but the issue you encountered shows that we still have room for improvement in the user experience. Our engineers eventually figured out a way to retrieve your lost data, so it has now been fully restored, but it definitely took more time than it should have. We'll do our best to figure out the best course of action to prevent such issues from happening in the future.

Sharetibe Helps To Reduce Risk

We had built a previous custom marketplace which required a significant inventment which increased the risk.

Sharetribe allowed us to start building Bunking with a limited investment and risk until we could find product market fit.

We use Marketplace Studio, one of their development partners to add custom development which we can do almost by module/feature, which again, helps us reduce risk.

Impeccable customer service!

Impeccable customer service!
Sharetribe has always gotten back to me within 24 hours or less (even though we're on opposite sides of the planet) whenever we had a question or issue. They are always helpful and have never made us feel like we were a burden. They even got back to us over a weekend when we were having a technical issue with our marketplace! I really can't recommend them enough.
