We're sorry you're disappointed with the orientation of the caseback engraving. As explained on the product page at the time of purchase, and in our correspondence, the Durrant uses a screw-down caseback to ensure an effective water-resistant seal. Because the caseback tightens to a different position depending on where the threads seat, it's not possible to guarantee that the engraving will align perfectly. Attempting to force it into a specific position would compromise the water resistance of the watch.

This is a characteristic of screw-down casebacks rather than a manufacturing defect or quality issue, and it's something you'll see across all watch brands that use this type of construction.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We completely understand your concerns and wanted to clarify a couple of points regarding the watch.

The NH35 automatic movement used in your watch has a manufacturer’s stated accuracy tolerance of -20 to +40 seconds per day. Some variation in timekeeping is therefore normal with a mechanical movement, and based on the accuracy you’ve described, the movement is operating within its specified tolerance.

Regarding the caseback, our casebacks are screwed down to create an effective water-resistant seal. Because the caseback is threaded, it is not possible to guarantee that the engraving will sit centrally in exactly the same position every time it is fitted. The final position is determined by where the thread naturally comes to rest when the caseback is fully tightened.

This is something we also highlight on the product page at the point of purchase, where we state that the orientation of the caseback engraving cannot be guaranteed. We’re sorry if this wasn’t something you were aware of when placing your order, and we completely understand how it could be disappointing if you were expecting the engraving to be perfectly aligned.

Even if the caseback is initially aligned before engraving, removing it and refitting it afterwards can result in it sitting in a slightly different position. Some watches may happen to have an aligned caseback, but this is essentially down to where the thread stops when tightened, rather than something that can be precisely controlled.

This is not a reflection of a lack of attention to detail or the quality of the watch, but a characteristic of threaded screw-down casebacks that is common across mechanical watches. We would also strongly advise against loosening the caseback to try to align the engraving, as doing so can compromise the water-resistant seal and potentially allow dust or moisture into the watch.

Hi Megan,

I'm sorry to hear you're still unhappy with the outcome. However, I would like to clarify the circumstances for anyone reading this review, as it does not accurately reflect what happened.

Around five months after purchase, you contacted us regarding condensation inside the watch, the watch stopping intermittently, and the spring bars having failed, causing the watch to come off the wrist.

As with all water ingress claims, we asked for the watch to be returned so we could determine how the moisture had entered the case. We explained in advance that if the watch failed our pressure tests, it would indicate a manufacturing or assembly issue and the repair would be completed under warranty. If the watch passed the pressure tests, it would demonstrate that the seals were intact and that the moisture had entered because the crown had not been fully secured, which is not covered by the warranty.

Following inspection, the watch passed the pressure test, confirming that the case and seals were functioning correctly. Unfortunately, the moisture had caused internal damage, although our watchmaker was able to save the movement and only the hands required replacement.

We therefore charged £35, which covered the replacement hands and return shipping. We did not charge for the time required to strip, dry and reassemble the watch, nor for replacing the spring bars.

Regarding the spring bars, these are an industry-standard component used by virtually all watch manufacturers. They are designed to release under excessive force to help protect both the wearer and the watch if it is caught or subjected to a significant impact. Their failure is not, in itself, evidence of a manufacturing defect.

We appreciate that this wasn't the outcome you were hoping for, but we believe we acted fairly, consistently with our published warranty, and communicated the findings clearly throughout the process. We always stand behind our products when a genuine manufacturing fault is identified, but we also have to apply our warranty consistently when testing shows the cause is outside of warranty coverage.

We're sorry to hear you're disappointed with your watch.

We take claims regarding durability very seriously, which is why we carried out a full inspection of the watch when it was returned to us. Our qualified watchmakers pressure-tested the case, crown and seals, and the watch passed all tests, confirming there was no manufacturing fault with its water resistance.

During the inspection, evidence of water ingress was found. The assessment concluded that water had entered the watch while the crown was not fully secured. Unfortunately, no watch can maintain its water resistance if the crown is left open or not fully screwed down, so this is not covered under the warranty.

Although the damage was not due to a manufacturing defect, we offered a repair at a reduced cost to replace the affected components and return the watch in full working order.

We appreciate that this wasn't the outcome you were hoping for, but our decision was based on the findings of our qualified watchmakers following inspection and testing. If you'd like to discuss the matter further, please contact our customer service team and we'll be happy to assist.

Had a watchmaker's report been requested during the repair process, we would have been happy to provide it. We have now sent the watchmaker's report, along with a video showing your watch successfully passing the pressure test, to your fiancée's email address, as she is the original purchaser and the customer we are corresponding with.
