This internship provided exposure to a professional corporate environment within a large, well-established, English-speaking multinational firm, offering real insight into how teams operate and communicate. From the beginning, the process of signing up and securing your placement is very smooth and well organised. I did not go with my original placement, as I wanted more of a Japanese-focused firm, and although they usually recommend accepting what you are assigned based on your existing skills, it is better to trust your instincts if something does not feel right, as this decision worked out extremely well for me.

The workload leaned more toward observation and light involvement, so it is not strong for building technical or hard skills, but it significantly improves confidence, independence, and understanding of workplace expectations. It is best suited for ages 18 to 25, as most interns are younger, and older participants should expect to operate more independently and may not form the close social circles often advertised.

If you value a clean and quiet living space, the provided accommodation may not suit you, and I chose a serviced apartment at roughly two to three times the cost of the program for better comfort, privacy, and proximity to work. Some interns had to travel almost two hours to work each day, which is normal in Tokyo, so keep that in mind if you choose their accommodation.

Outside of work, Tokyo offers a huge amount to experience, so bringing sufficient spending money is important. There are many easy day trips such as Nikko, Hakone, and Kamakura, and taking the Shinkansen is part of the experience. Exploring solo, speaking with locals, and stepping outside your comfort zone is one of the best ways to learn about yourself. Google Maps is extremely accurate and will get you anywhere you need to go, especially when using trains, which are efficient and reliable. Most places close around 8pm, so if you want to maximise time after work, rideshare options like Uber can help but are expensive.

Using AI tools to plan your days and solve problems on your own is highly valuable, as plans will constantly change depending on time, budget, and energy. Do not limit yourself to major tourist hotspots, and instead explore based on your own interests. Some winter days will be rainy and overcast, so it is worth planning indoor activities for those days and saving outdoor exploring for clearer weather.

Tax-free shopping typically starts after spending around 5,500 yen, for example at Don Quijote. It is better to arrive with minimal items, as you can buy high-quality clothing locally, especially from Uniqlo. Carry an external charger at all times, as your phone is essential for navigation. As a foreigner, you are required to carry your passport, so keep it secure. A good travel backpack is useful for daily exploring, and be prepared to walk extensively as Tokyo is one of the best cities for walking.

Time management is critical. Plan your free time and weekends in advance or you will miss out. Avoid relying entirely on others’ plans and explore based on your own interests. If you have an iPhone, you can add a Suica card directly to Apple Wallet and tap your phone for transport without opening any apps. The program also provides a physical card if preferred.

Avoid doing this internship in summer, as it is extremely hot and uncomfortable. Winter was ideal, and autumn would also be a strong option. Overall, while it may not fully match promotional expectations seen on social media, it remains very worthwhile for personal and professional growth. Those on a strict budget may find the constant opportunities to spend challenging.

Overall 8/10 experience, highly recommend!

I really enjoyed my experience. However, if I could go back I would probably choose to find my own accommodation. I also think for someone being in the program for longer than 1 month, you should be given more than 4 free excursions. But over all I had a great time, met lovely people, really enjoyed my internship, and had an amazing experience coordinator!

The internship I completed in Tokyo was fantastic! Thanks to the Intern Group and all their support and provisions, I was able to undertake an engaging and fulfilling internship within one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the world. The Intern Group were extremely skilled at analysing my resume, as based on my strengths, they suitably paired me with the NGO Seibo Japan, where I was able to grow and develop my skills and interests in marketing and fundraising. I would highly recommend taking part in an Internship with The Intern Group, and I can't wait until I return to Japan!

My experience with The Intern Group was genuinely life changing. Being able to live and work for two months in the middle of a bustling, lively city (Dublin in my case) was a genuine dream come true. Shout out to Lucy and Laura, who were excellant hosts and made me feel safe and like nothing could go wrong.
Like, I actually honestly cannot overstate how cool this experience was. If you're on the fence, stop wasting time and apply.

I had a great experience in Japan, meeting lots of new friends which will help me network in the future. The Intern Group organized fun events to help create a strong sense of friendship, community and cultural emersion which was great to fill in spare time throughout the week. I would recommend doing an internship through The Intern Group as it is worth the time, money and experience.

Great experience, I was worried they will not deliver but they did, and if there is a country you want to go to where finding a job or internship could be difficult. They can definitely help and make it work.

I had so much fun during my 5 month internship in Hong Kong, made a lot of friends and discovered the Cantonese culture. I highly recommend the experience !

This was one of the most transformative experiences I've ever had. I have always wanted to study abroad at university, but due to my circumstances, I was never able to. After graduation, I wanted to gain work experience, and I discovered The Intern Group. This was the perfect opportunity for professional development and an overseas experience. The work that I was doing led me to some pretty cool places, and I got to meet a lot of interesting and unique personalities. If you're considering something like this, I would tell you to do it. Keep in mind that it's what you make of it, and that can make your experience 10/10 or 0/10. The resources are provided for you to grow and learn, so go make the most of your time!

In short: THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU AT ALL. THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY

The Intern Group was amazing! From start to finish I had someone in my corner helping me with anything I needed. They helped me get an internship in my field where I got real hands on experience! But not only did they help me grow professionally, but they helped me personally grow. Through planned group activities, I was able to meet an amazing group of friends that helped me adjust to New York! I can’t thank them enough for this amazing experience, I really felt like I grew as a person!
