Ghana Medical Placement
This has honestly been the best three months of my life.
I traveled solo to Ghana in January this year to volunteer in the local hospital.
I was picked up from Accra Airport after a six and a half hour flight. Accra airport was bustling with people and very humid, but from the get go I knew this would be fun. I was met by two lovely lads called Rubben and Stephen - who quickly became like brothers to me and the group.
We stayed the night in Accra after picking everyone up from the airport. We then traveled the 9 hours to Busua. The town itself is like paradise. Lovely people, wildlife, golden sand beaches, surfers and coconut trees all around. From that moment I knew it would feel like home in no time. We then got off the bus and we were greeted by the absolutely amazing woman that is Dinah Essel (The Volunteer Coordinator).
Dinah is your one stop shop for anything you need while out there and is someone who will go above and beyond for us volunteers and the local community. Dinah arranged haircuts, taxis, shopping trips, activities and so much more and is a real credit to TMR.
Dinah and her team of lads Francis, Rubben, Stephen and Alfred are some of the kindest people to walk this earth and honesty make the trip, I can't fail to thank Philomena (Dinah's amazing sister who does most of the cooking - the food is amazing).
We stay at Dadsons lodge and were instantly shown to our rooms and didn't have to lift a finger. We were honestly 30 seconds away from the golden sand beach and Tina's restaurant/bar (which you will frequent a lot on your downtime).
The staff at the hospital are amazing and truly do everything then can to. make you feel comfortable and supported. The hospital is a local government funded hospital in the fishing town of Dixcove. The Doctors and Nurses there are so highly educated and are honestly superheroes. I have seen and been involved in so much during my time in the hospital from witnessing surgeries, C sections and childbirth to taking bloods for testing and doing blood sugar - experiences that you wouldn't get to have back home.
I have met some life long friends in Busua, and will wholeheartedly be coming back. Dinah and her team are amazing and it truly pained me to leave them and the group behind. If you are on the fence about booking Ghana with TMR I urge you to go ahead. I booked mine the week I flew out and will never regret the experiences I had and memories I made with the group, and the staff who make you so comfortable they are arguably are more like friends.

Happy Paws Dog Programme
I was at Sri Lanka doing the dog programme for 3 weeks with Kavi. Coming down I didn’t really know what to expect, but it’s been an absolute experience of a lifetime. The programme is as hands on as you’d like it to be, which made it even more eligible for me as I’m studying vet-medicine. You can join vet appointments and treatments if you’d like. Kavi is the sweetest and the dogs in the sanctuary and the village are the cutest. They are in need of help, but they are also so very positive towards humans and depend on Kavis feeding Tuc-Tuc and helping hand. Driving around you bring food and a first aid kit, looking for dogs in need, feeding the packs and looking after the puppy’s on the street. Absolutely heartwarming experience, if you like dogs, do this programme. Don’t be scared, we always felt safe.

Childcare programe in Ghana
I have just finished 3 months volunteering in Ghana doing the childcare program and I cannot recommend it enough. From the second I landed in Accra the staff were incredible, welcoming and putting our safety and happiness at the forefront. Dinah and the local team ensured that my entire trip ran smoothly and answered any questions we had. You are truly seen as part of one big family. Whether I was at the school or relaxing by the beach or doing evening activities I never had a dull moment. There was always something going on while still having time to relax and unwind. The volunteering itself was very rewarding and seeing the children’s pure joy at your presence was worth the trip itself! It was an incredible experience

Interesting 3 weeks met loads of lovely people cleaning ladies friendly the owners not so much. Food not very good not that it was because it was any kind of local cuisine but very everything lacked flavor so everyone just covered everything in salt to fry add some taste. Lots maintenance issues never followed up on. Not much variety in daily tasks

Disappointing organisation and poor student support
I travelled to India through Mighty Roar as part of a placement experience as a Student Nurse, and while there were some worthwhile aspects to the clinical exposure, the overall organisation and support were disappointing. They are not able to sign Pebble Pad!
The biggest issues were around communication, basic welfare, and poor planning. On arrival, there was little practical support to help settle in, such as guidance on getting a SIM card, accessing cash, or understanding accommodation facilities. The orientation was also delayed until well over a week into the placement and did not provide the practical information that would actually have been useful.
Food arrangements were another ongoing issue. Meals were often late, breakfast options were limited despite what had been advertised, and there were times where this had a real impact on the day-to-day experience. Concerns raised locally were often not resolved, which made the situation more frustrating over time.
I also joined the Golden Triangle trip, which unfortunately felt poorly coordinated. There were changes to the itinerary that were not communicated clearly in advance, and meal allowances/inclusions were not managed in the way they had been described before booking. At times, participants were taken to places where food prices did not match the budget allowance provided.
India itself was an incredible experience, and the placement had value, but the support and organisation from the programme provider did not meet expectations. There is a lot of room for improvement in communication, transparency, and student welfare.

Two weeks of teaching with TMR in Ghana. One of the most beautiful experiences. So grateful to all those who made it such a fantastic adventure. Kind people, brilliant kids, wild and wonderful place. Pretty basic, but well-run facilities. Really motivational work at the school. Amazing.

Improvements needed
I had a mixed experience at TMR doing the turtle programme and based on my experience I would not recommend it.
The positives - lovely group of people, the food was decent, accommodation was as expected, staff were friendly, good location.
The negatives -
1. The training given to volunteers was completely inadequate. This meant there were inconsistencies with the depth that the turtle eggs were buried at (we were told 1 arms length which obviously varied by person and different species are meant to be buried at different depths) and I doubt that some of the eggs will ever hatch as they may have been buried at the wrong depth. When some eggs did hatch, the lack of training meant it was a complete disaster with some hatchlings being stepped on and crushed, which was really upsetting and could have been easily avoided. I raised the lack of training point with the local staff and I believe they are working on developing a more comprehensive training programme, however given the length of time this programme has been running I would have expected this to already be in place.
2. The volunteers were offered the opportunity by the local team to visit turtle beach which was described as somewhere you can see and swim with grown turtles. The turtle beach was incredibly upsetting and was one of the worst moments of my trip. Turtles were baited into a small shallow area where hundreds of tourists were touching, feeding and picking them up. Given that TMR call themselves the only ethical turtle sanctuary in Sri Lanka, they should absolutely not be condoning this form of animal cruelty by offering their volunteers the opportunity to visit. I raised this point with the local team and suggested some outreach could be done with the local community and tourists to explain the problems with this and how turtles can be interacted with ethically but was told that this was too dangerous and the programme could be shut down by the local authorities, which I find doubtful.
3. Similarly to the point above, we were offered the opportunity to visit a ‘turtle sanctuary’ which I researched in advance and found multiple problems with including keeping the hatchlings in glass jars for days/weeks, handling the hatchlings by hand without gloves and not following proper procedure for releasing them into the sea. I raised this with the local team and they acknowledged that these practices weren’t ethical but continued to offer the trip.
4. TMR pay poachers for the turtle eggs so the eggs go to the hatchery instead of being sold on. These eggs are then buried the next morning at the 6am census. On two occasions eggs were delivered by poachers at 7.30am which led me to believe that these poachers are digging up the turtle nests to collect the eggs rather than collecting them as they’re being laid, as it’s highly unlikely that turtles are laying their eggs after sunrise. This is really problematic as these nests should be left undisturbed.
5. Further to the point above, I think the hatchery itself is actually counterintuitive as the poachers could be paid to protect the beach (instead of for the eggs) so the turtles could lay their eggs and they hatch naturally rather than them being moved to the hatchery and disturbing the natural process. Volunteers would still be able to see the turtles lay eggs and patrols could be added to see the eggs hatch naturally on the beach. I didn’t raise this feedback with the local team as I felt like they had limited control over this and it was feedback for management.
6. Tharu, the programme coordinator, was very friendly and was trying her best, but I don’t think the management were properly supporting her to run the programme. She lacked the subject specific knowledge (i.e. marine conservation) to run the programme to a high ethical standard and she would have benefitted from specialist support by a marine conservationist.
7. Finally, the programme is very expensive. I was happy to pay this price under the understanding that this money is going towards a good cause but there is not much evidence that the money is actually being spent on the turtle conservation programme. In my opinion, TMR seems profit driven with positive impact being secondary.

TMR Sri Lanka
I was in TMR medical programme for March and it was definitely an experience to remember. The placements they take you too are very interesting and has similarities and differences to the NHS in the UK, we also got experience going to the herbal hospitals which was insightful considering this practice isn’t used in the UK. TMR was great place to stay provided with all you would need as well as good quality food 3x a day with restaurants near by if you want to go and explore to the nearby town in Hikkeduwa with only 1200 rupees. It was a great way to meet new people as they have their own bar that hosts karaoke on Tuesdays and is open with a pool. It is a great way to meet new people and TMR help arrange afternoon activities such as walks, kayaking, surfing, football during the week. As well as the weekend trips you can do for extra which were very great particularly to do on the first weekend so you don’t have to worry about the itinerary whilst doing and seeing so much I had a chance to zip line and hike and go to a safari. Even though I was in the medical programme I got to witness the turtle programme release turtles and was fortunate to get involved which was great. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone that wants to travel but is worried about doing it alone.

Amazing experience doing turtle conservation
I’ve had the most amazing time spending 3 weeks on the turtle conservation programme in Sri Lanka. So much of this has been down to Tharu, she is clearly passionate about the conservation work she does, and has been such a kind and fun friend and mentor whilst I’ve been here. I’ve learned so much during my time here both about turtle conservation efforts and being immersed in a culture other than my own. I’ve found the programme so well organised and I would absolutely recommend it to everyone. This has been one of the best experiences of my life!!

Amazing!!
I'm almost at the end of 3 weeks volunteering with the childcare and teaching projects at TMR in Sri Lanka and it's been an incredible experience! The staff members do everything they can to make you comfortable and everyone here is so friendly! The children are adorable and both the childcare and teaching projects are very rewarding so I'd definitely recommend them. I was very nervous coming out here as this was my first time travelling anywhere on my own, but there are lots of people here in the same position so there's been lots of help available. I can't think of any negatives and I would recommend this experience a million times over!
