I loved this experience
I loved this experience! The animals were amazing and the sanctuary itself was also great. I went for a month and it flew by before I knew it! I could have easily stayed another month! I am going to miss the animals and the people very much.

I highly recommend the street dog programme !
I highly recommend the street dog programme! I was originally there for 3 months for the turtle conservation programme, whilst it was magical seeing Green and Olive Ridley turtles lay eggs. I found myself helping with the dogs every day instead. There was so much more to help out with so I felt like I was truly making a difference. For example you making the dog food, walk the dogs on the beach, go to the vets,and go on the tuktuk to feed the strays. I fell in love with every dog and wanted to take them home! If you’re an animal lover this is definitely for you! Kavi, the volunteer coordinator is exceptional at her job and always makes everyone feel included and welcome🤗 . Whilst at times it was hard work it was also very rewarding. In fact it has inspired me to take a veterinary course in the future, I learnt a lot, how to bandage and administrate medicine. The accommodation is also very nice, with air con too, and the beach right out front! The staff were all lovely and the food was delicious I miss it all already.

well I did 5 weeks in Namibia with the naankuse team and it was amazing. was easy to arrange with the mighty roar and they supported the whole time. I had a phenomenal time and incredible experiences. So worth it and im planning to do another one

Medical volunteering
Amazing experience, staff were lovely and food was good. Lots of opportunities to experience different wards and hospitals including a herbal hospital and clinic. Really expanded my knowledge on global health which will be very beneficial to me when starting my career in the UK. Additionally, we went on a weekend trip organised by TMR which was amazing and so well organised. In the week there is also lots of opportunities to go surfing, kayaking and participate in karaoke. It was also lovely to get to know the other volunteers on different projects. We were lucky enough to watch a turtle release and meet some of the rescue dogs. Amazing experience overall!

Sri Lanka Turtle Conservation
I had an amazing time doing the turtle program for 4 weeks in Sri Lanka! You have the opportunity to watch turtles laying eggs, bury them in the on-site hatchery and release the babies once they have hatched- this does involve some late nights/ early mornings but you do have a lot of free time in the day. Although it was introduced after I started (as it felt a bit confusing due to the lack of hands-on experience and guidance, which was exacerbated by the number of new people) there are now practical sessions, reference videos, tools for egg burying, and a more detailed presentation when you first arrive, which makes everything run more smoothly. The conservation itself feels quite ethical as turtles are released immediately after they hatch, eggs/ hatchlings are always handled with gloves, and contact with laying mothers is kept to a minimum. However, there are many places in the local area that don’t feel as ethical, such as the local turtle beach where tourists can feed/ swim with the animals, and trips to some of these places are organised by the local team, which many people weren’t fully comfortable with, however you can choose to not attend.
Tharu, the programme organiser, made the experience even more enjoyable as she is so kind, funny and is always there to help if needed. All of the staff are lovely and make you feel so welcome. They are also always up for feedback to improve the experience.
The accommodation is quite basic but well equipped, as rooms have aircon, mosquito nets and decently sized bathrooms (one per room, which does make it a bit tricky if you’re in a larger room size). Food is buffet style traditional cuisine on a rotating schedule which is good (a bit repetitive) but there are so many incredible food spots in the local area to explore as well.
You get a lot of free time in the day across all programmes, with a lot of flexibility when it comes to wanting to try other things (I did childcare for a few days as well). Weekends are also really good opportunities to explore further afield as well, and the organised trips are really fun- I did the hill country one and the organisation/ structure means you get to see so much!
Overall, this has been such an incredible experience. I have met so many amazing people and experienced so many new things!

TMR Sri Lanka
I spent a month with TMR in Sri Lanka doing the sea turtle program and the childcare program. It has been such an amazing experience and I have enjoyed every day I spent here. The staff are all lovely, I spent lots of time with Chamo and Tharu (the coordinators of my programs) and they were always so smiley and welcoming to everyone. The hill country weekend trip was one of the highlights of my trip and I would recommend it highly to anyone coming to Sri Lanka.

Medical program TMR Sri Lanka
Medical program TMR Sri Lanka
I had a fantastic time attending the medical program in TMR Sri Lanka.
The placement can be a mixed bag, very dependent on what ward you're on each day but this is also a good thing. You are given a chance to experience a wide variety of medicine which coming from the UK was both familiar and new in equal parts. Doctors are often keen to answer and questions and get you involved via asking you questions on ward round. A particular highlight is the exposure to Ayurvedic Traditional medicine and herbal clinics. This was a totally new experience for me and very eye opening.
The accommodation itself is good. It's a large compound with same sex dorms. I was in a room of 6 boys but for the majority of my stay there were only three of us there. The adjacent bar is also a great place for socialising.
I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone considering Sri Lanka for their elective! The hostel is located in a great area, really close to Hikkaduwa which is a fantastic town. Other volunteers were all lovely too.

Worthwhile experience
I had a really good time volunteering on the turtle program in Sri Lanka & a lot of that was thanks to Tharu. She is funny, clever & genuinely cares about both the turtles and volunteers in her care. The food and accommodation are basic but it was worth it to have such a great experience with amazing people & wildlife in a beautiful location.

TMR Sri Lanka- Teaching Programme

Sri Lanka is beautiful but the mighty roar made it such an amazing experience, i’ve met some of my best friends and cannot express my gratitude enough. The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful, especially Tharu who led the turtle conservation programme which has been spectacular! 6 weeks at TMR Sri Lanka
I'v just spent 6 weeks at TMR volunteer base in Sri Lanka, on the Sea Turtle program. It was really amazing. Iv seen numerous turtles laying their eggs whilst on beach patrols and I'v also released loads of hatchlings into the ocean. Tharu, the turtle program leader was amazing. She's fun, hard working and really friendly. She was a big reason why my trip was so special. The other staff are also amazing and friendly, and the place has a big family feel to it. The volunteer house is safe, secure and managed well. It's also easy to get out and about to explore the local area. I definitely recommend the Turtle Program in Sri Lanka, the country is a real fun place with a laid back vibe.

Sri Lanka Medical Elective
I have just finished my 4 week medical elective with The Mighty Roar in Sri Lanka.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable 4 weeks. Everyone at The Mighty Roar, especially Thillini, Chamo and Charith were very welcoming and helpful at all times throughout our stay.
The medical placement suited me well! I’m glad that we only did a couple of hours at the local base hospitals each morning as we could then enjoy having our afternoons free. Thillini organised the placements well and gave a variety of different opportunities. It was interesting to get some experience in traditional medicine (Ayurveda).
The location is great, being able to access the beach/Hikkaduwa/nearby restaurants and cafes very easily.
The Mighty Roar Sri Lanka is very social and an enjoyable place to be.
I really enjoyed my four weeks here and would highly recommend to others

Street dog volunteering Sri Lanka
I’ve just finished 2 weeks volunteering on the street dog programme in Sri Lanka with TMR and had the best time ever! The programme is hard work and you have to be committed to it but it is so worth it. The dogs in the sanctuary are adorable and although there are some heartbreaking moments, it’s so rewarding going out to help the dogs on the streets too. Kavi, who runs the programme here is amazing and so involved in helping us with all the dogs - she deserves lots of recognition! Volunteering here has been so worthwhile and the best 2 weeks ever, I wish I was staying longer! I highly recommend the street dog volunteering as the dogs here rely on us to survive.

Absolutely Incredible Turtle Program in…
Absolutely Incredible Turtle Program in Sri Lanka – I Learned So Much!
I spent 2 weeks volunteering on the turtle program in Sri Lanka, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! I gained so much knowledge about these amazing creatures, and getting to help save baby hatchlings was incredibly rewarding.
All the staff are lovely, welcoming, caring, and incredibly knowledgeable – they made me feel comfortable right from the start. They always go out of their way to help and make everyone feel at home. There are daily activities planned too, so there’s never a dull moment, and the turtle care experience itself is absolutely incredible!
A massive shout-out and very special thank you to Tharu, the leader of the program – she was absolutely wonderful! She couldn’t have been nicer and is amazing at what she does. With her constant smile, she checks in on everyone and genuinely cares that we all have the best possible time. She works so hard to ensure the turtles are well looked after, goes above and beyond to help with anything we need, and makes every single person feel welcome and supported. Her kindness and positive energy are what make this program so extra special!
Thank you also to TMR – you were fantastic too! As an added bonus, during our free time I got to visit the Maldives, which was absolutely amazing!

Medical elective
I did the medical elective for 6 weeks in Sri Lanka with the mighty roar and I had a great time. The staff here are definitely the best bit of the programme and all the activities they put on after placement in the afternoon/evening. There was a football game against the local Sri Lanka’s every Wednesday which was definitely my favourite part of the trip. The placement was interesting and everyone was very nice and welcoming on the ward. It’s in a brilliant location right next to your own private beach and a short Tuk Tuk into Hikkadua which was a great place to go out for food.

Weekend trip to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay
We had a great weekend in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay organised by Truly Voyage Vietnam. We were greeted at the airport on arrival and then to our hotel right next to Train Street. The food tour the first night was a great way to try some Vietnamese cuisine. The cruise to Ha Long Bay with Fantasea Cruises was also very well organised and we had an amazing time, we will never forget. Definitely a must do if in Hanoi. And the final day was well spent completing a cultural tour around Hanoi. Every guide we encountered was very friendly and informative, and our driver for the weekend was great.
