A wholly unpleasant experience

A wholly unpleasant experience with this company and I won't be using them again.

At arrival
Hire pick up is nowhere near the airport
I was given an automatic - no manual available
I couldn't cancel the contract at that short notice
Long waiting time to be seen
Had to fill out yet another form on top of the booking made by Ryanair
Don't take cash
Lots of people about looking busy but that didn't translate into a seamless service

On return
There was a small scuff on ONE wheel trim which was apparently 'damage'
I had to fill out a damage form
I was charged an admin fee for "having to administrate the damage"
Took ages, again lots of people looking busy but without much benefit

I thought I'd try a Bulgarian firm but we'll go back to using Alamo, Enterprise or Europcar

P. S. The Hyundai i20 was monumentally uncomfortable to drive due to the design of the seat, giving me neck and shoulder pain for a whole week

Definitely not using them again, and won't be recommending to others.

We would, however, like to clarify a few points.
Our rental office is located outside the airport premises, and this information is clearly stated during the booking process. We also provide a complimentary shuttle service between the airport and our office for the convenience of all customers.
Regarding the vehicle, reservations are fulfilled according to the booked category and vehicle availability at the time of pick-up. While we always do our best to accommodate customer preferences, a specific transmission type cannot always be guaranteed unless it is confirmed as part of the reservation.
The completion of the rental agreement and the required documentation is a standard procedure followed by car rental companies worldwide. These formalities are necessary to ensure the protection of both our customers and our company.
With respect to the wheel trim, all vehicles are carefully inspected upon return in accordance with the rental agreement. Any new damage, regardless of its size, must be documented and processed consistently. The administration fee is not a penalty, but a contractual charge covering the handling and processing of the damage claim, as outlined in the rental terms accepted at the time of signing the agreement.
We also regret that you experienced longer waiting times. During peak travel periods, service may take a little longer, but we continuously work to improve our processes and reduce waiting times.
As for the comfort of the Hyundai i20, seat ergonomics are a characteristic of the vehicle model itself and are unfortunately beyond our control.
While we fully respect every customer's right to share their experience, we believe that several of the concerns mentioned relate to standard operating procedures that are common across the car rental industry.

The cars are in great condition and Top


The cars are in great condition and Top Rent A Car service is genuine and friendly. The only downside is their deposit is meaningless if you don’t buy their full insurance because it is not the limit of what you pay in the event of a 50:50 or your fault situation with damage - you effectively personally underwrite the entire cost of the car, if it’s a write-off. This is ridiculous when the largest (and otherwise great) hire car company in Bulgaria could and should negotiate better deposit-limited protection for its “third party cover” customers
who, let’s be clear, most likely have less resources to pay a full claim in the first place.

Quite ok

The car was as excepted - clean, good condition. The service was also great in the moment I got to talk to an employee. But I waited about an hour to get the car. The office was extremely crowded, the online check in didn’t work. This was quite annoying. The drop off was perfect.

First time renting a car

I've received the vehicle I've reserved. Relatively a new vehicle, no issues at all. No problems returning the vehicle, with purchased coverage from them. The only downside was waiting one hour to get the car and 30min for the shuttle to come, don't make plans close to the receiving time.

The company gave me a car with all four


The company gave me a car with all four worn tyres, which two were dangerous to drive with and they were almost flat. Unfortunately they did not take the responsibility to help me but blamed first me as they told me it is my fault. With a lot of frustration and back and forth, they Just replaced only 1 tyre.

Do not waste your money here. Unresponsable team.

Zcela nevhodné a zavádějící poskytnuté informace asistentem pobočky v Plovdiv, které vedlo k nesprávnému vyřízení pojiÅ¡tění poÅ¡kozeného vozidla a k finálnímu závaÅŸnému finančnímu poÅ¡kození klienta. Navíc neoprávněně svÜmi chybami a arogancí dále poÅ¡kozují klienta opakováním administrativního poplatku, děsná zkuÅ¡enost!

Nikdy uş nezopakuji svou chybu, abych si půjčoval vozidlo od Top Rent a Car!

Completely inappropriate and misleading information provided by the assistant of the Plovdiv branch, which led to incorrect insurance settlement of the damaged vehicle and to the final serious financial damage of the client. Moreover, they unjustifiably, with their mistakes and arrogance, further damage the client by repeating the administrative fee, a terrible experience!

I will never make my mistake of renting a vehicle from Top Rent a Car again!

Be extremely careful if you are picking


Be extremely careful if you are picking up a vehicle from Top Rent A Car Bulgaria during nighttime hours. We rented a Dacia and the handover took place in pitch-black conditions, making it physically impossible to inspect the lowest horizontal elements of the undercarriage.

When we returned the car in daylight, the agent looked right under the bumper and found a small plastic scratch. For a budget car like a Dacia, minor scratches underneath are just NORMAL TEAR AND WEAR from everyday driving on the road. You cannot see this in the dark.
They did not show us any photos of the underside from before our rental. They only had a paper agreement with no marks there.

They charged a massive €240 for this. This price is crazy and way too high. In Bulgaria for low budget car like Dacia, a local garage charges only €25 to €50 to fix a bumper corner, and even a full professional repaint tops out at €180. They are overcharging tourists for invisible road wear to make extra money.
I've read the previous reviews and it looks like they target foreigners to charge extra, be careful especially with Dimitry.

Advice to future renters: Avoid this company if your flight lands at night. If you have no choice, crawl on your hands and knees with your phone flashlight and photograph the absolute bottom of the bumpers before driving away!

Update: Regarding Top Rent A Car Bulgaria responce
Your corporate response completely misses the point and only confirms your predatory tactics. You openly admit that returning a car in daylight reveals details that were impossible to see during your nighttime handover.Suggesting that a customer arriving on a late-night flight should crawl on the asphalt in pitch darkness with a phone flashlight to inspect the hidden underside of a bumper is absolutely absurd. It proves you knowingly pass off pre-existing, invisible underside wear-and-tear to the next unsuspecting tourist who lands at night.You claim your process is "standardized," but charging an inflated fee for a minor cosmetic scrape on the bottom plastic of a bumper is a clear, bad-faith cash grab. We provided you with clear explanations, yet you chose to ignore them and force-charge our card anyway.This isn't about your "standard procedures"—it is about a total lack of trust, respect, and business ethics.

We understand that returning a vehicle under daylight conditions may reveal details that were not easily noticeable during nighttime pick-up. However, we would like to clarify that our rental and inspection procedures are designed to ensure fairness and consistency for all customers, regardless of the time of handover.
At the time of pick-up, each customer is given the opportunity and responsibility to inspect the vehicle together with our representative and to note any visible damage in the rental agreement. We always strongly encourage clients to carefully review all external parts of the vehicle, including lower areas where possible, and to raise any concerns before departure. Once the vehicle is accepted without remarks, it is considered to be handed over in the recorded condition.
Regarding the damage assessment upon return, all vehicles are inspected according to a standardized internal procedure. Any identified damage is evaluated based on the documented condition report at pick-up, return inspection, and available photographic evidence. Charges are not applied arbitrarily, but strictly in accordance with the rental terms and the actual repair assessment, in order to ensure transparency and consistency across all cases.
We also want to address your concern regarding inspection conditions at night. While lighting conditions can sometimes make inspection more difficult, customers are always welcome to request additional time or assistance from our staff to thoroughly check the vehicle before acceptance. We also encourage the use of mobile phone flashlights for closer inspection where needed.
With regard to pricing, any damage charges reflect the professional repair assessment and include not only parts and labor, but also administrative and processing costs associated with handling the case. These are applied uniformly and are not based on customer nationality or other personal factors.
We strongly reject any suggestion that customers are treated differently based on origin. All clients are subject to the same procedures, standards, and documentation requirements.
