The absolute worst
The absolute worst. I purchased online through USAA, the plan I selected at checkout was not the plan they gave me once paid for. I called, they said they would place it on an urgent change, it took a week of calling to get anything changed, and they still messed it up. Cancelling tomorrow
Overpriced and Not Worth a Year Obligation
This eye insurance is over priced and not worth the money. Iâm paying $30 a month and still had to come out of pocket $180 for glasses. So glad my employer has decided to open up benefits to vision care because this is just not worth it. They force you into a year agreement without telling you itâs a year. I canât wait until the year is up and I wonât renew with them. Canât downgrade. The benefits that they showed me online that came with the $30 plan was not what actually came with the plan once I signed up. So not worth it. Donât use them. See if your employer can sponsor you or go with another company
VSP takes your money & gives nothing
VSP takes your money & gives nothing.
From the start, when I enrolled with VSP, I have never been able to access my online account. They repeatedly lock me out. So then I have to call to just to access my online account. I did that a few months ago, and well, surprise, surprise, it is locked again. They don't want their members to know what benefits they have, they just want to take their money and make it difficult for their members. Find another vision provider because they are legally scamming people.
VSP Vision Insurance Is a Complete Rip-Off
VSP Vision Insurance is nothing short of a scam disguised as a benefit. I purchased prescription glasses from an out-of-network provider because VSP only has one preferred online provider â and guess what? That provider marks up prices ridiculously.
The exact same frame costs around $160 on multiple major eyewear sites, but VSPâs âpreferredâ provider lists it for $300. My plan supposedly includes a $170 frame allowance, but when I bought the same frame elsewhere for $163, VSP only reimbursed me $70.
Worse, they donât list out-of-network reimbursement details anywhere on the member portal or plan summary. Itâs intentionally opaque. They want you trapped using their overpriced partners so they can pull more money out of your pocket.
Itâs an anti-consumer, manipulative setup that punishes anyone who tries to make a smart, cost-conscious purchase. For a company that markets itself as caring about âvision wellness,â VSPâs real vision seems to be maximizing profit at the customerâs expense.
Avoid this insurance if you actually care about getting fair value for your money.
Not the Best Option for Vision Care
I never received great benefits for VSP. All of the frames they offered were not better that the ones that I found with Warby Parker, Lookmatic, Glasses USA or other comparable companies. They were very expensive. They never offered to offset using these companies. When I called in September to cancel my membership, I was told I would be charged until November. I was never told that August was the membership renewal date.

Charge me twice a month for several months when I only have one account. Upon emailing and calling them they acted like they had no idea how to fix it so I just canceled and went with a more competent company.
What a joke. This is NOT insurance - it's a scam.
What a joke! Iâve been paying for vision insurance all year through BCBS, only to find out today that they outsource it to a third party: VSP Vision Care. Supposedly, VSP was supposed to send me information in the mailâI do not believe I received anything.
When I finally learned the details, I was shocked: just $100 toward frames and $100 toward lenses, with a $50 deductible. Locally, their âin-networkâ providers are all high-end facilities where a basic pair of glasses starts at $700 or more. I usually purchase mine at Samâs Club for about $500, including progressives, transition lenses, and anti-scratch coating.
The person assisting me tried to file out-of-network with VSP. Their âcoverageâ? $50âminus the $50 deductible. That means they paid exactly zero.
I also paid for my ophthalmologist to do my refraction prescription. I was there and they are out of network.
This is not insurance. This is a scam.
NEVER pay this company more than oner month at a time.
VSP is the eye insurance I could afford as someone who is self employed. I always pay my "must have" expenses, like health care, and car insurance 6 months to a year at a time to ensure I have the money to stay covered. I can't see my own face without glasses so this is a vital expense. This year I learned I have cataracts in both eyes and need surgery. Of course, they don't cover any of this, but when I realized I no longer needed their services I called to do two things. (1) Ask if they could refund me the 6 months paid in advance as I will not be needing their services anymore. They said no because I had an eye exam. They paid their portion, I paid mine. I asked what happened to people who pay month by month? Would that exam not have been covered if the insurance was paid month by month? Of course, it would have. So you see my point. I will not be using their insurance to buy glasses or contacts this year. It makes sense to refund the unused months (6 to be exact). But they will NOT. They won't use any of my money towards my care but they still will keep it. I see that as unethical. (2) I asked if they would make sure the insurance was canceled and NOT set as an automatic renewal. Again, they said they would do neither!!! Not only will they not cancel it and stop any auto renewal, I have to call back 60 days prior to auto renewal. What if my son had called because I died? Would he be asked to call back 60 days prior to the renewal? Of course not. Surely there is a simple way to hit cancel. Even if they're keeping my money. Instead they burden me with remembering to come back in several months to to cancel I will no longer be using and stop it from auto renewing. I'm writing to let others know this company does not put the customer first. They collect money and distribute it when required. Period. And to warn others about the hard lesson I learned today. Never pay anything in advance with this company. I guess the silver lining is I never have to use them again and can warn others to find another company when possible.
Zero stars
Zero stars. I've tried to use 3 times over the last 3 years. Never had success, even though I am a member through my job. They say I am not, when I call there are no human beings to talk with -- the phone says I am not a member and hangs up. Every time. I've had to pay for my exams out of pocket, and not gotten any glasses due to the unexpected expense. My company pays for my membership/ insurance benefit with them which says it covers exams annually and up to $180 towards glasses. They suck, it's fraud, and I hate them. Do not waste your money. Even $5 a year is a waste, since they refuse to provide the service you are paying for, These folks should be in jail.
Bad Value / Hard To Cancel
Turns out it's cheaper to just pay than to have this insurance. Also, they make it difficult to cancel.

-Best to look here when shopping w/someone!
-I need to pay 90% of bill, they don't pay anything.
-Both lens company and optometrist said they're worthless (two sides of the country).
(Both are independent of each other.)
-Suggest you read the fine print before using them, and definitely verify any purchase/exam(s) if you're thinking of using them (see what they actually pay)
Mediocre insurance
Mediocre insurance. At best.
Company is shitty. Will find any reason to not pay benefits.
Donât waste your money. Cheaper to just pay out of pocket. Paid for by work? Take the premium directly as a benefit.
Complete waste of money.
Locked Into a 12-Month Contract AfterâŠ
Locked Into a 12-Month Contract After One Eye Exam â Feels Like a Trap
Iâm shocked and disappointed. I signed up for VSP Individual Vision assuming it worked like most insurance â something I could cancel if needed. I used one routine eye exam early in the year, and when I tried to cancel months later, I was told Iâm locked into a full 12-month contract with no option to cancel.
No pro-rated refund. No flexibility. Just a flat "No" from customer service.
This was never made clear upfront. I never would have signed up had I known Iâd be required to pay for a full year even if my situation changed â especially after using a single benefit. It feels like a predatory business model, not a customer-first vision plan.
VSP â if youâre reading this: Iâm asking you to review my account, acknowledge how misleading this feels, and allow a way for people to cancel in good faith. At the very least, stop the auto-renewal and make your policies more transparent at signup.
Please respond.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
Whatever you do don't sign up with these guys. Pirates seem like angels compared to this company.
The absolute worst
The absolute worst. Been paying for benefits for years, first time I went to put in a claim, they didn't have a listing for my daughter in spite of the fact she was covered under the plan. No way to remedy the situation and get reimbursement for the exam or the contact. What a waste of money.
It covers so little that we won't evenâŠ
It covers so little that we won't even break even on premiums. It only covers single vision or lined bifocal lenses, not progressives. It doesn't cover any coatings, etc. We use CostCo, which accepts it, but apparently is not an "in network provider," so the frame coverage is limited to $80 and we don't get any of the additional benefits. We don't need the exam coverage -- we have that with Medicare.
Awful
As many other people have said, I'd give a "zero" if I could. I've had to bring on an attorney to help me deal with this company, which refuses to abide by its own insurance contracts, placing customers in 6-to-8-week holding patterns before finding (nonexistent) loopholes to avoid paying simple reimbursements that are well within their insurance plans. Customer service officers on the phone are rude and poorly trained, either giving deliberately false information or simply giving information without a clear understanding of the company's own policies. You are much better off just paying for your vision care out-of-pocket than dealing with this thuggish money sink.
Worst insurance ever!
I work in a computer office and the job comes with VSP, worst insurance I have ever had in my life. $140 max for frames, but does not cover Polycarbonate lenses, or anti glare, or blue light shield (in other words everything I need to actually do my job).
If I could give 0 starts I would
If I could give 0 starts I would. Inconsistent information, passed around a lot, and ended up with a wild bill that they told me they would reimburse.
