Slow with refunds

Clothes are nice. However extremely slow at refunds for returns. In fact on two separate orders where I returned items of clothing I had to contact customer care to inquire what stage my refund was at. The most recent was at 25 working days and I can only imagine it would have taken longer if I hadn't gotten in touch. I can only imagine that the reason for taking so long with refunds is possibly hoping that some customers might forget about the refund. It is not my problem if you're having a busy sales period. Refund your customers their money promptly. Happy to support ethical clothing but I'm no longer happy to support People Tree. Avoid!

Hi Aileen,

Thank you for your feedback.

We do normally advise that our refunds can take up to 10 working days to process. However we have recently had higher volumes of returns due to our busy sale period. We always encourage our customers to get in touch if they feel that it has been past the 10 working days and they have still not received a refund.

We certainly are not hoping that our customers will forget about their refunds as this is highly unethical. Our customers are at the heart of our business and we aim to provide the best service we possibly can as a small team. We aim to operate in an ethical manner, both through how we produce our clothing and as a business as a whole.

We would be very sorry to lose you as a customer but I understand if current our refund system is not suitable for you at this time. This is something we are working on improving and hope for it to be more of an automated process in the near future.

We appreciate your feedback, thank you for supporting Fair Trade Fashion.

Over a month to process return/refund offputting

I really want to keep shopping with such ethical brand. products of good quality but some tops vary in sizing depending on cut so i had to return some items and I am still waiting for a refund.
I can appreciate it takes time to process refunds during the sales but it would be good to at least receive an email that acknowledges receipt of returned items! My post office receipt shows it’s been received over a month ago.
That puts me off continuing to shop on line with people tree. Shame as I like the products but sadly can mostly afford when in sales.

Over 5 weeks to process a return?!

I've always loved the style of clothes from People Tree and so was really excited when I got round to ordering some items for myself. I had to return some of the items as they weren't quite my which was fine, however, this proved to be problematic.

First, my returned items got stuck in a backlog for 3 weeks - I emailed People Tree about it and they responded fairly promptly. A week later, the return finally went through, it seemed to be going fine and PayPal confirmed a pending payment. I then get an email from PayPal saying that the payment has failed. Back to emailing customer service who apologise for the issue and say they'll get back to me as soon as they can. It has been a week since then and 5 weeks since I initially returned the items and I still haven't gotten my money back.

People Tree market themselves as an ethical luxury clothing brand and I do believe in what they stand for, however, their customer service seems to be an awful lot of shrugging shoulders and "we'll keep you updated" for the price of the clothes that they sell. I understand that some of the issues that I experienced aren't necessarily something they can fix but offering to refund money through an alternative payment method would have been helpful rather than delaying the refund even further.

A disappointment

A disappointment, unfortunately.

Ordered underwear – 2 pairs of panties seem okay (ordered bigger size just in case), but a soft bra and a camisole were not. They are my size but 'the medium support' makes me suffocate, definitely doesn't fit 'true to size' or 'relaxed fit' as stated on the website.

Also, underwear is excluded from returns (although the bra came with a stain on it as if somebody had tried it before) so it was a waste of money and will have a lot of work adjusting both items to make any use of them as I have nobody to pass them on to.

Material is fine, good quality cotton, firm stitching and plain look, nothing fancy.

I was also disappointed by the fact that every single piece came in its own plastic bag which is absolutely against any belief in sustainability and the meaning of buying expensive organic clothes.

Was meaning to order some dresses because they look lovely on the website but will not do after this experience, sorry.

Hi Katarina

We're very sorry you have not had a pleasant experience with your items.

Please note you can return bra tops. It is only underwear bottoms and earrings that we cannot accept returns on for hygiene reasons. Of course, if you receive something with a mark or stain we are extremely happy to return or replace this for you. Please contact our customer service team at people@peopletree.co.uk if you would like to discuss this.

In terms of our plastic packaging, I completely understand your concern. The plastic we use is made from polypropylene and is recyclable and biodegradable. We have two aeration holes in the plastic packaging to prevent condensation from forming, and the plastic is also Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) free, which prevents garments from yellowing.

We use recyclable plastic packaging because in accordance with our commitment to sustainability we employ sea-freight for the majority of our products. This means we have to pack them in plastic to protect them from moisture damage in transit. This is not a remote scenario, unfortunately, and we have in the past lost parts of our collection due to damage in transit. This is a terrible shame for both our producers and customers. Any damage caused to the garments would result in unsellable product.

At the moment we are working on an alternative solution.

We are happy for customers to contact us after they have placed an order and to request it to be sent plastic free, if you wish to shop with us again in the future.

Perfect on every front. Excellent customer service too, when I had a query it was dealt with immediately. I highly recommend this company.

I have loved all my People Tree

I have loved all my People Tree purchases (various cotton short and long-sleeved tops and my favourite V&A dress, which has received lots of compliments every time I wear it!

I like to buy from companies who are ethical and really care about the people who make their clothes, so People Tree is one of my favourites, Plus they always have plenty of navy which is my go-to base colour.

Beware if buying/using gift vouchers! Also terrible with returns.

BEWARE - If you use a gift voucher to pay for part of your order, they will always refund the gift voucher first and your cash second. This means that if you order more than you intend to keep, you will probably end up paying for the retained item in full with cash! I had to battle with customer services to get this corrected. They sent me an additional voucher by way of an apology which i tried to use and the same thing happened again. Clearly this is their standard procedure and not an accident - totally unethical in my opinion.

Also, this company is incapable of processing refunds correctly. I have had to chase customer services in order to get returned items refunded for my last two orders and have had to challenge the amount refunded.

With my latest order, I received a notification saying one of the items was out of stock and could not be received (no big deal). I actually did receive the item but not something else so clearly the wrong item was cancelled from the order and as a result the refund amount was incorrect. Knowing how bad this company is with refunds, I sent the whole order back in the hope that I'd eventually get refunded the correct amount (I didn't feel I could trust them to correct their previous error). The return was received by them on the 30th January - 18 days later I have not received a refund.

I am totally fed up with the poor service and no longer trust this company at all. I want to support this ethical fashion retailer but no longer can when their treatment of customers is quite frankly, unethical.

We understand how frustrating this can be and we are taking it very seriously. You have now been refunded in full for your order in addition to a new voucher created.

Very good

Very good, I love their products overall!
Great quality fabric, quick and free delivery, good customer service.
The only thing is that the sizes/fit are not always consistent but since the returns are free then there's no risk ordering.
I love buying new pieces every season!

Poor quality Fisherman's Sweater

I have always been quite pleased with my previous purchases from People Tree however I was very disappointed with my latest purchase, a Fishermans Jumper in Raspberry. When it first arrived I thought it looked pretty good but even after just the first wear I noticed that pilling was beginning already. Three weeks and about 5 wears later the whole jumper is baggy, misshapen and the pilling is excessive to say the least. I have dozens of pieces of knitwear, including many that were priced at a point below this jumper, and not one of them is pilling as badly as this one. When I contacted People Tree they gave me a standard patronising lecture about pilling being a natural phenomenon and that I could reshape it by washing etc. etc. and that was it. People Tree, I know exactly what piling is and what causes but on a £129 jumper (sale price!) I would have expected something much much better. It isn't even one month old! I certainly won't be buying from you again.

Good but still room for company improvement.

(My sale purchases were V&A pastoral print dress, Ali black velvet dungarees, Isla stripped rib top, Brass star earrings, Ronnie green dress, Tanya shift dress. 4 pairs of knickers, 1 pair of socks. Yet to come are a navy cord workmans jacket and the Neva printed top.)

Years ago I used to purchase items I really loved from PT, most of which are still good to wear and worn regularly. The clothes were on the pricey side but the quality justified the price and I would pick up items in the sale. I chose carefully and most of the items I bought were made of 'real' fabric, not t-shirting jersey which is probably why they've lasted so long. I still get compliments on some of them.

Now and again I browse the website and see things I really like but the clothing now costs what is far and away beyond my income. Not just pricey but very expensive. (If a dress costs £100ish and it is made of t-shirting jersey, it really doesn't matter how beautiful the print is, it is still *just* a jersey dress.) Does the cost justify the garment? The answer from me is no. So I was really very surprised and happy to see that I could buy some items discounted in the sale. I bought some items I wouldn't have normally chosen that I purchased because I may not get another chance at that price or because that was what was available in my size.

So a big question definately hangs over my experience with Peopletree.. Is "ethical" clothing just a marketable luxury for the few who can afford it? I saw another reviewer refer to PT as 'ethical luxury' but are the items really unique and special enough to be called luxurious or just ethical versions of garments one would buy on the high street but at 4x the cost being fairtrade and organic? I would argue jersey is ultimately a fast fashion fabric. It doesn't look good for long and it holes fairly quickly.

Ethical luxury to me would look more like a embroidered weighty hempsilk skirt.

As far as the quality of my purchases, the sizing is true. I am a UK 12 pear shape. My experience with PT has been that it is the cut of garments that still needs work. Many non jersey dresses are still little more than a box of fabric supplied with a belt. (Nanette, Alaina, Angela styles for example to name a few.) It's interesting to see these styled in pictures on the website, they are often gathered alot at the back for pics which is totally impractical for everyday wear. I want a garment to look good as I move in it and be confident that the way it looks wont change. I have this problem with the Ronnie dress, I need to gather excess material round the back for it to look flattering but as I move the excess material works its was around my body and I look huge (which I'm not!)

I've very often seen dresses I adore that are far to short for 35yo me to wear now which is a big problem. When I saw the Alissa dress SS19 (coming soon) I was floored, jaw droppingly gorgeus and it had that 'classic' PT well made look, woven fabric *tick*, hand embroidered *tick*.. Then I saw the length in a full size picture and it broke my heart, no way would I wear a dress that short. Why not just above knee length? The same problem at the moment with trousers showing ankles, all well and good now but they will look dated and out of fashion soon enough so I won't purchase them. Too close to fast fashion for me. lt also seems there's too much black, grey, navy, khaki now. There are styles I would wear but not in that colour as they are just so drab.. I can't believe one reviewer honestly requested more black.

I really like that the website displays what the garment is made of but it is almost impossible to know what the haptic quality of the fabric is. I expected the Tanya shift dress to be jersey so was very pleasantly surprised and pleased that it was woven twill and fully lined. On the other hand I was surprised that both the Ronnie dress and V&A pastoral print dress were made of fairly light jersey and I hadn't expected this.

In the past I have bought dresses I've liked from PT for the natural woven fibre fabrics and unusual prints alone. The cut has always been fairly unreliable. I used to run PT garments through the sewing machine and take in the waist area, adding darts to make more flattering. There are a few garments online now that could look great if they were resewn but to pay £40 in a sale (let alone £95 full price!) for a dress just to then resew it is total utter madness.

I was really nervous about fit and cut for the Ali dungarees. They were, however, spot on and a good length with generous turnup that could easily be altered by a tailor if you needed more length. These were my 5* star buy by a long chalk even though they were still very expensive in the sale because I can tell they will last me years. It seemed a bit mean not to include a spare button on the label, given they were originally £119 (I would never have paid that!) The Isla ribbed top looked somewhat tired and washed out already when it arrived just due to the fabric. "Moonlit ocean tones" or just another way to say the dye wasn't very crisp in colour?

The starry brass earring are totally charming and an amazingly simple design that both added value and gave me a new appreciation for the natural honesty of brass as a material. Brilliantly done PT. 5/5

The V&A Pastoral dress was a great fit but I really can't understand how the original £100 odd price for this garment (and similar jersey dresses by PT) is justified at all.

Another point, both the Isla top and V&A pastoral dress made a small *snap* sound of machine threads breaking through stretching when I tried them on for the first time. Not a big deal in itself for me. If PT *are* an "ethical luxury" brand and I had paid full price for these items I'd be less forgiving and more unimpressed.

I've been after ethically made knickers for some time so splashed out and picked up 4 pairs at £6ish each in the sale. I consider £24 for 4 pairs of plain cotton knickers to be very expensive indeed even at a sale price! One of the pairs had a bad fault after 1 gentle wash (I was just unlucky) which I photographed and sent to customer service who were excellant. I was given a choice of a refund or replacement. Customer service has always been great for me with PT, always very easy, totally trustworth upfront and reliable. PT do and have always done customer service really well. Faultless, 5/5

Packaging as lots of others have said is brilliant but again can you rethink the plastic bags? Cellophane?

I haven't bought anything that is made of Lyocell and I probably wont so I'm crossing everything it's not going to take over. Lyocell doesn't say quality or luxury to me in just the same way that rayon doesn't either. So £149 for a dress made of fabric that costs less than £6 a meter to buy (not even wholesale) is unbelievable. While production of lyocell fibers is generally eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable, the transformation of lyocell fibers into fabric and garments can use many or the same harsh, and even nasty toxic, chemicals and processes used in conventional garments. This is because it doesn’t accept dye well. So sustainable is not the same as organic. I prefer 100% natural fibres and I'm skeptically unsure how buying branded TencelTM, manufactured by a large company in Austria does as much directly to support fairtrade as a concept or gives fairly paid work to those who need it?

To conclude, I'm giving you 4/5 stars overall because I do love you but theres still room for improvement. Now that I'm aware of your sale, I'll be coming back to PT as before, keeping my eyes peeled for another sale in the hope I'll find some well priced pieces at the end of the year.

Returned yoga leggings

I have been buying clothes with People Tree for over 10 years and generally found the clothes to be excellent quality with a varied fit I.e. I often have to return items. I bought the blue and orange fitness leggings in the Christmas sale, but had to return them as the diagonal stitching across my thighs seemed as though it might rub during excercise classes. I tried to post the parcel back on 1st Jan through a local shop which said it was a pick up point for collect plus (a service which the returns note said I could use). The shop staff tried to scan the barcode, but it wouldn’t work and I couldn’t find People Tree listed as a recognised company on the Collect Plus website. Instead, I posted the parcel back when the Post Office was open on 3rd January. I then waited over a week for the refund to appear, but there was no sign. I called People Tree who said it would be 10 working days from when they received the parcel - this seems an excessively long time considering that the clothes are priced highly and branded as an ethical luxury brand. I waited until 21st January as Royal Mail said my item was received on the 7th. Still no refund! I called and spoke to a lady in the morning who said she would put it through straight away and that I would get a refund when it was done. By mid-afternoon I still hadn’t had the e-mail so called again. A different lady looked up the account and said the first lady had started the process but not completed it. I have now the e-mail which says I have to wait up to 5 days for the refund to appear (so, potentially waited 25 days for a refund). This is not good enough! I have been put off buying from People Tree again even though I believe in the environmental benefits of organic cotton.

First, they sent a wrong item, then a bait and switch and no accountability!

Tried to buy a pair of workwear trousers on sale which I had bought previously and was sent shorts instead which I returned. There was a 20% off sale promotion so the trousers on sale should be discounted an additional 20% off. When I went to check out, the basket total didn’t register the 20% off for the trousers but did so for another sale item. When I emailed PT, they explained it was an error with their checkout platform and asked for a screenshot. I provided the screenshot, proving the trousers were on sale. The next day they responded saying the trousers are not on sale at all. The trousers were advertised as on sale, as proven by my screenshot, and even if it was an error with their system, the right thing for PT to do is to be accountable for their error and honour the price to the customer, which they did not do.

This is a classic bait and switch scheme, even if it was a system error: advertise something on sale to bait the customer and once the customer is hooked, switch it for another price or product. This is underhanded and unethical. What is the problem is not their system error but their refusal to honour their advertised price. Not buying from the website and dealing with their appalling customer service again!
