OK, this review comes short, and then long. If you're bustling then know that sorting out a Will with Bequest is just about as good as it can be. Fabulous staff, fabulous design of writing within the website, fabulous follow up contact with the legal folk. 5 star. Do it!

Now, if you're having a coffee and don't mind a few minutes more on this, let me tell you what it was like.

I don't think I'm alone in this, but drawing a Will, indeed sorting out anything to do with stepping off the planet, has always been on my to do list, and stayed there. For decades. Oh dear! I was, once again, talking with friends about needing to sort this out when the son of a great friend sent me a link to Bequest.

I sat on that for a bit. Then in one week I:

cheerfully sat in a funeral director's office with a young woman who set me up with a simple funeral plan;
opened up the Bequest link and found that I was led through the process of writing my Will in the most straightforward way. Someone has put a great deal of thought into the website design and the form one has to fill in. A wonderful example of 'less is more'. Although the company seems young, full of energy, the writing here is mature, thoughtful, very concise, very clear. It was easy to write the text needed, but I had to do some thinking about what to write - a very good, long overdue, exercise. By the time I had finished, I really felt that I had achieved some resolution to matters which had been for far too long left hanging around.
You get some choices with Bequest. You can get a legally valid Will without spending anything. But you need to sort out where to put it, print it all down, and you need to double check that you have done everything that Bequest has asked you to do correctly.
You get the opportunity to spend either £40 or £50 (in round figures), for which you have the Will checked by qualified practitioners, printed and bound, sent back to you with clear instructions on how to get it witnessed. If you take the lower price, then you hang onto it at that point, job done. If you take the higher price, just £10 more, then you send the Will back for final checking, it is uploaded to the National Wills Service (No, me neither, but how useful is that?), so it's definitely going to be safe.
For me, that was £50 well spent. I have learned since that if I had done everything as above with a legal firm direct, the cost would have been at least 5 times as much.
Oh yes, there is a final option. Assuming, like me, that you're hopeful of staying on the planet for a while, circumstances might change. Goodness, one might come into some money, be left a surprise in someone else's Will, who knows? Such an event might mean that you need to amend your Will. With Bequest, for £9 a year you can make three changes in that year. Should be ample, unless you're a character in a Victorian melodrama who is constantly wiping your brow and calling your lawyer to chop and change your bequests!

So, for £60 everything done and dusted! Now, bear with me, a little bit more which might be useful.

Using the website was, as I said, simple and pleasant. I did encounter a glitch at the end when a page seemed to stick. Momentarily I thought I might have to start the whole thing again, but over on the right was a text chat button. Within seconds I was onto Andrea, who managed be calm, professional and friendly through the medium of text, which is pretty good in my book, and she said that she could see that I had an application going and would monitor its progress. I came off the site and hoped for the best. Within 5 minutes I had an email from Andrea assuring me she was on the case, followed by Ollie, whose case Andrea was now on, and the whole issue was solved before 10 minutes was up.

And then, 30 minutes later, the legal representative was on the phone. My Will in front of him, he went through every section and checked it with me. I should say that Bequest staff cannot see the document, they process it, encrypted, straight to the legal people. Having checked that all was OK, I finished the task. Two days later, a bound Will, copy and instructions turned up. I got two close friends together in a great coffee shop and all was signed. I chose to send the Will back by Recorded Delivery, but that is a matter for you, as Bequest pay the return postage.

What a fantastic experience. I had been dreading doing all this, now I can get on with living, knowing that there's no problem if God, Fate, whoever you favour, has other plans! Thanks to everyone at Bequest and the Legal Partner for a fantastic service.

Pleasantly surprised about the ability to create my will online. My notary tried to rip me off and charge over a thousand for this. Game-changing how this business finally adds transparency & honesty to something that is so delicate: the life of yourself and your family.

Update 2 (29Sep21) - Spoke at length with Ollie today (he called me at an appointed time) and I pointed out some issues with their questionnaire. He mentioned how they were making improvements to some aspects of the questionnaire and provide other clarifications.

Bumped up the rating to reflect their good customer service and my belief that they really are going to make improvements to their questionnaire in the near future.

I appreciate the intent (hence 2 stars instead of 1). However, I'm not so sure about the execution.

My wife and I have life insurance from LV and even new-ish companies like Dead Happy. We wanted to give Bequest a shot. With no unusual health issues or history (touch wood), we apparently aren't eligible for Bequest according to their logic/algorithm ! Not sure how that is.

Also, when I called them, after trying 4-5 times and getting kicked out since all lines were busy (shouldn't there be a queue that my call can be in instead of disconnecting ?!), on the 6th or so attempt, the call was picked up by a receptionist (or similar) who said everyone was busy and while she could not answer any questions, she could take my details down & pass it on to have someone call me back in a day or so.

It's been more than a week, and I'm yet to hear back. Not that I'm interested anymore.

In summary, I'm not impressed with the product/triaging and the lack of customer service.

So quick and easy, I’m hoping at the age of 24 I don’t need it but when I settle down and get everything in place with a mortgage I’m going to need something for my family in the instance I go

Awesome service. I'm only 29 and probably wouldn't have made a Will if it hadn't been free. I actually feel great knowing I now have something just in case.

Used it to get a free will - Very quick and easy process, and a quick turnaround to receive the final document from the estate planners.

Probably wouldn't have got one if it hadn't been so straightforward!
