Budget Car Scam
Pick up a car in Queenstown, modified by adding child safety seat which only cost $73. Lady from the desk service took my card little did I know they charge me with $198. Went back to them and ask as there was no explanation why they charged and took money from my debit. They said it was a policy but it was never mentioned nor there was no receipt. This was a misleading company, I shouldn’t trust renting a car from them. Until now there was no refund or communication from them.

picked up car in Christchurch. also had a issue with the tyres were bald with the metal poking thru. sort advice from a local tyre repairer and advised that car unroadworthy. A day out of my holiday to chase up somehow to get this fixed, sent to a airport that is not attended and then had to go to a tyre repairer and get the tyres replaced. I had a call from a Budget officer today and advised that cars have alignment issues and tires are wearing down and the tires where checked prior to the car leaving the office and where passed. advised this officer that in 6 days of driving, tyres don't wear down that fast. Budget would not take responsibly for the condition of these tyres blaming the car type. I don't know what has to be done to this company for them to stop issuing out unroadworthy cars to clients. hoping someone does not have a accident due to this company unroadworthy tires.
Hired a car at Auckland Airport for 12…
Hired a car at Auckland Airport for 12 days. Charge $3200. Oil light went on immediately out of the airport. Got a flat tire. Put on the space saver tire and took car to tire shop. They advised me they could not fix the tire as it was illegal to do so as the tires were not roadworthy (the tires were the original tires at 45000 km). The tires were bald with the metal poking thru. All this despite a supposed ‘warrant of fitness’ 2 months prior at Queenstown vehicle testing ( another one star outfit). No one at Budget was available all day by phone ( several hours, multiple calls)except 2 Philippine call centre people who lied about assuring me the AK hire office would call me. Finally got lucky by actually talking to a budget employee at Rotorua airport. My car was replaced there, a full refund and apology was made for the unroadworthy car and complete lack of customer care. Booked thru Qantas. I was also charged the ‘feul surcharge’ despite them noting tank returned full( I note this in other reviews). I won’t be back. Franchising, no attention to vehicle maintenance and cynical outsourcing of ‘ customer service’ has ruined this company. Dangerous expensive mistake. Avoid.
Will never use Budget again
Will never use Budget again. Booked and paid through Air NZ app so thought would be trustworthy. Picked up the car and was told our booking included insurance but would we like to upgrade to zero excess for an extra $10 a day. We said yes expecting to be charged $80 instead got charged $333. Disputed when we dropped off the car. Lady said she had to email Hamilton and would call. I said do not charge my card until it is sorted. Never heard from them and my card has been charged. Dishonest and misleading company. The charge they put through was also more than the invoice they provided on the day so I will be lodging a transaction dispute with Bank. Ruined what was a great holiday. I will never use Budget again and will be giving feedback to Air NZ as they recommend them. Three words to sum Budget up Dishonest,Untrustworthy, Swindlers.

I will never ever rent a vechile from Budget ever again.
I was lied to and miss informed at time of rental and then again lied to at return of rental.
I was told a hold will be placed on my card for $200 and will be released when I return the vechile.
When I returned the vechile I was then informed it will be released in 3 days which is not the case.
Then when I rang and questioned the call centre I was informed 15 to 30 days depending on bank.
When you read fine print it state 7 to 10 days.
This company lies and makes up their policy as they go.
I would be very cautious when dealing with Budget as they lie and manipulate you to get your business.
Never again Budget will I ever hire from you.
Air New Zealand needs to look at how their customers are being treated and lied to because Budget don't really care who you are.
They need better training and they need to stop lying to their customers.
I paid all inadvance through Air New Zealand which now reflects on them.
Read the reviews disgusting service and yet Air New Zealand still uses this company.

Didn't Budget on them Samming customers!
Got a quote from Budget (Auckland International Airport), paid up front. Picked up the vehicle. Returned the vehicle in pefect condition. When I returned back to Australia, and some days later, they decided to charge my credit card an additional $150. Budget claims the quote I have in writing is not correct, however there was no mention of this at any point, didn't even attempt to contact me, just charged the card. If you are in any doubt, read their Google Reviews, many comments on exactly the same thing ... scamming tourists. Don't use Budget whilst travelling in NZ.
Worst customer experience in my life
Worst customer experience in my life. I have an injury so the advertised short walk from the terminal was important. However it was a long stressful walk and my injury and health was impacted and I ended up in hospital that night- drove the car for 10 minutes all up and got them to pick it up- they still charged me for the full week. Customer service was the pits and filling in their pointless tickets for complaints was pointless and frustrating. Never hire from them or their parent Avis company. If I could give them a minus I would. Hell expensive experience.
Absolutely terrible service and threatening
Rented a car and agreed to leave behind the roll out boot cover.
Then once we had left we got a call from Lynn informing use we would be charged $1000 for leaving something behind unless we returned to get it. Which we did and she again confirmed we would have been charged $1000 if we hadn't returned.
Front of house staff were also slow and rude.

I'd give them a 1 if I could. Terrible customer service. Told it takes 4 to 8 weeks to fix a windscreen so they can return our 5k that they charged for repairs. Had the run around for 3 weeks, hung up on, told the money was released already, then put hough to Australia who have another story. Originally we were told by their car return it will be fixed on-site and money returned within a few days.
Would never hire from Budget again
I was fully insured paying an extra $27 per day and picked the car up in wellington where I was meant to return too. I had a skiing accident in the central north island that resulted in me being unable to drive (I could supply documentation as proof). I arranged for my husband to get a lift to whakapapa to come to get the car back to the nearest budget rental car return in Taupo. Budget refused to cover him as the driver for an hour 1/2 drive and then could not offer an alternative solution. I would not recommend hiring from budget and will not do so myself ever again.
Multiple illegalities
Woman at desk refused to hand me the keys for about 40mins, trying to force me to pay an extra $700 for add-ons.
Once the car was returned and bond returned, I see an extra charge on my card.
This woman upgraded my vehicle without adding it to the signed contract or invoice, and has since charged me.
They accessed my account and withdrew funds without authorisation (theft) and then customer service proceeds to send me an updated invoice once I complained (tampering with legal documents). Two completely illegal actions by the company.
Cheated by the company
We booked a Category W car through our agent a month in advance. When we arrived at the airport to get the car we were told that the car isn't available and were forced to take a Category F car. We were cheated by the company, and the staff were unwilling to help us. We are told now that we can't change the car because of the contract and because we took the Category F car today. But it can't be expected of us to wait there for an undisclosed amount of time, hoping the car we booked would show up. As if been blatantly lied to, by the company and its employees wasn’t enough. We were given a car that has been driven for almost 75,000-80,000 km already. The car feels like a truck to drive, and barely fits all of our luggage, of which we had informed the company earlier itself. We are extremely dissatisfied by ‘Budget Car Rentals’. We will definitely take this forward and recommend people not to work with this company.
Well I thought everything was ok until…
Well I thought everything was ok until I got charged $1100 out of no where. An then said we only have u taking the vehicle this date for one day. But I had only once booked it for 23/6-26/6 paid what I needed n then paid insurances. Only to 1wk later get charged 1127. An ur customer service people kept on saying u only booked one day. Ummm no I didn’t because you would’ve charged me the full cost when I booked the first time. If I booked one night to hire the car and got the money taken straight away, but I apparently change dates for further along. That was never the case. Wouldn’t I have been charged at first instance. The guy at the kiosk said nothing but I’m bringing the car back on the 26/6 is that right and I said yes.
I only used $40 in your petrol and brought it back full etc. now you have taken money out of my household. I have sent you everything don’t bother asking me for more evidence you should all have it. Deal with you stuff. Else I’ll see you at tribunal.
Very disappointed in both Budget and…
Very disappointed in both Budget and Webjet. We booked our travel and carhire through webjet and paid for full cover insurance online. When picking up the car from budget in Auckland after providing the online registration details we were asked yo sign a contract which we thought was consistent with what we had booked online. I thought something was up when I saw my credit card transactions a couple of days later and phoned both budget and webjet to get it resolved. Webjet asked me to put it in writing which I did. I followed up with Budget when handing back the keys in Auckland as their invoice did not tally with the booking reservation we did with webjet online. They assured us it would be sorted on their end and we would not be charged incorrectly. 2 days after returning to Melbourne we noticed they charged our credit card per their invoice (which is more than double what we were to pay per our reservation through Webjet) Budget informs me because we signed the contract they are within their rights to charge us what they did. Despite showing them proof that we had pre-purchased full cover insurance. Really? No-one pays again for something they have already purchased? I am so disappointed with both companies due to their lack of resolving this issue when it is clear that their 2 systems are to blame.
Don't bother with Budget
Booked a 1 day car rental on line for pick up and drop off at Wellington airport and was charged on the day and then charged again a couple of days later. Been chasing a refund for a month (6 phone calls and 3 emails). Their customer service and response is appalling and wish the Budget NZ website would display the email contact details of the GM here in NZ !
Never again
Tried to change a booking 2 days out by extending it by another day (earlier). Tried online (wouldn't work), called the Auckland Airport branch (number on Google didn't work) and then made 3 calls to the 'helpline' to sort. Was told repeatedly that they would get in contact with the local branch and would get back to me. Didn't and then finally after 2 days and my 3rd call, couldn't find a car, then charged me the maximum cancellation fee as it was within 24 hours of the original pickup. It would have been a smaller cancellation fee, but the time ran out as they never got back to me. Incompetent service. Will never use Budget Rent a Car again.
Budget double charged me for a rental…
Budget double charged me for a rental hire. $1500 extra for no reason.
Absolutely appalling customer service, there really aren't any words to describe the nightmare of an experience other than they should be closed down, the representation of such a so called reputable company is sorry to say crap
11 calls later 14 different so called phone operators, an investigation done by myself I will add, no accountability on their end at all infact they were pretty much singing innocent until proven guilty.... and that took me all of 10 minutes but still played cool calm and collective about the fact they debited $1500 without any authority to do so.
Never again Budget some sort of compassion for the circus you caused wouldn't have hurt but couldn't even do that.... you customer service phone people are fools.

Rented a car for 24 hours to go from Picton to Christchurch. Charged $924.00 - way too expensive.
Impossible to call the company in Picton but had to talk to someone in Asia who didn't know where Picton is and gave an Australian phone number !!
Paid for a Nissan X trail or similar and was supplied a smaller Mitsubishi ASX.
Sullen attendant in Picton office.
Collected a way better vehicle from the opposition in Greymouth dropped it of in Picton
Charge was exactly half Budget's price.

Terrible experience
Terrible experience.
Customer support is not equipped to answer some very basic questions (changing the drop off location), not willing to help to try to get to an answer, and are hostile and rude.
They ended the call by hanging up without a sorry or even goodbye.
