Had such a good experience with car rental through Budget NZ. The girl in Auckland airport were so helpful.
Most importantly, the rental price so much better compared to Hertz or Europcar. I think I saved more than 2.000 NZD. In addition, no hinden fees or whatsoever.
I highly recommend this company.
Budget cancelled booking at the last minute
I booked a car for xmas period 4 months in advance, and was called just before the start of the booking to say that there was no cars available anymore. It's such short notice that there are no suitable cars left anywhere to book.
Worst car rental costumer service experience
I rented a car at Oct22. Pick up location at Auckland city, return at Christchurch airport.
At one of the mornings, the car couldn’t start. I called the road side assistance (161NZD just for them to visit). The problem was a flooded engine. I was assured that this problem was NOT caused by me, but because of the car mechanics.
Although the rental agreement states that such cases are on Budget’s responsibility, it’s been over a month and I still haven’t got my money back.
Im just happy that it was “only” 161NZD, because from the way things going with the costumer service (who asks me to talk with Auckland “as it’s affecting some one else’s revenue”), I’m not going to see a penny back.
Had a great hire car through Budget…
Had a great hire car through Budget Auckland Airport. Almost brand new car that made our holiday fantastic. Easy and Seamless process collecting and delivering the car at the airport. Would recommend this company. Take out highest cover and no worries. Our car was collected in perfect condition and delivered back in perfect condition. Thank you Budget.
Charged for fuel even though a full tank.
Charged $128 for fuel, even though handed back the car with a full tank. I managed to contact the fuel station to get a copy of our receipt, so that amount was refunded. We also got given a much smaller vehicle than we had paid for, a difference of $825 for 12 days. I requested a refund of the difference in price, but this was denied. Overall extremely poor service from this company and I would never use them again. Would give zero stars if I could.
Worst experience ever
Company charged me twice for the booking. Once via rentalcars and for second time when I returned my car . Paid 730 NZD for the car and 1000 NZD afterwards which is super crazy. Also had to make a deal for insurance (that was not offered and I had to bring it up) I had to ask for the price breakdown and still did not get my money back. Never ever. Hands off this company please
Budget took $500 from my account without a valid reason
Budget took over $500NZD from my account without telling me, saying I returned the car late despite my invoice clearly showing I returned the car 4 days early. Reading reviews of budget in NZ and AUS this seems to be a very common occurrence, how can such a large company get away with pulling such a scam? I have now been told the money will be back in my account within ‘5 business days’ but I am skeptical based on other reviews I have read. The email I received telling me of my refund makes absolutely no apology for the mistake they have made and simply says they “will make the adjustment” in addition to “sorry for any inconvenience”. Of course it’s inconvenient for someone to take $500 from your bank account without your authorisation, knowledge or without providing a reason (in fact I consider this theft). If you’re thinking of renting a car from them please read the reviews first and see all of the other people that have been through this - then pick another car rental company!

this case has now dragged on for 4 months, I provided evidence that I was overcharged by $200 and no joy. Well Budget please keep the bloody money. I will just tell all and sundry - never use Budget NZ. not if you expect to be treated fairly
Disappointed - Never rent a car from them again
The car was not properly clean. The used covid test was still in the glove box. I have taken the photo of the used covid test before I threw it out.
Over charge for a short trip

Budget Car Rentals charged me NZD592.94 for a one way trip from Auckland Airport to Tauranga Airport (about 2.5 hours). On my way home from France, I went online and booked a one way trip from Auckland Airport (Pickup April 14th 2022) and drop off at Tauranga Airport on April 15th. I pre-paid NZD227.63. On arrival at Auckland Airport after a very long flight, I could not bother to argue when I was charged another NZD200.31 plus an additional fee of NZD165, before I could pick-up my car. So on the 9th May I complained to Budget by email about this obvious mistake, but have so far not received a satisfactory response. It has now been 36 days since I first brought this to their attention. How difficult is it to work out that I have been seriously overcharged?

Found silly excuses like having pet hair in the car when I returned it. N wanting to charge. Spoke to an idiotic lady named Lou from Petone. She is so rude and has very bad customer service.
If you want to claim or charge a customer, talk politely, just like how we speak to u. Don't u dare raise your voice!
She won't last too long in this job I bet. Or any jobs in fact with this attitude.
For me it smells like scam
The intermediary has already warned about the practices of Budget Rent a Car, regarding their pushing to take extra unnecessary insurance and breakdown assistance. They did the same with us, and after we arrived from a long and tiring flight, you start to doubt and fall for it.
However, after complaining the next day, and demonstrating that everything had already been optimally covered, all the unnecessary extras were reversed without any protest.
Although they promised everything had been reversed, extra amounts were charged afterwards.
Only after many emails did I get an answer: There was nothing to be done about it, it was signed for.
